Arena: Age of Barbarians

q3v7exn.jpg

This one has a different structure than the first game. Arena has a time limit and you also lose 10 minutes for every time you die and continue beyond 2.
qzPNKsi.jpg

You can also play as different characters.
IUmEGOo.jpg

It's randomized, you face a few different competitors and traps until you reach a fight vs either two giants apes or a t-rex.

Then there is this boss, and you can't continue and retry the fight if you lose to him.

You can still play if you lose that fight, escape from the dungeon, rematch the boss in a different place, then beat the wizard

but this is the ending you get

Hardest fight in the game, by far.

To see the ending you have to beat the mid-boss on your first try and then save this guy from the dungeon before fighting the wizard

Playing the original doom via ChocolateDoom which basically is the bug-for-bug compatible way to play them on a modern machine.

First time since I was a kid. I have mouselook on and still managed to die a couple of times going halfway through the first episode (ie "Knee Dead in Dead" - what was included in shareware doom, near 100% Romero's work). I played doom quite a bit as a kid but a few years after it came out via Doom95. Got a feeling I only ever played the first episode, certainly wouldn't have played the fourth episode that was included in Final Doom.

I'm sort of surprised to say that levels still stand up - and probably are better than those in many month shooters. I read Masters of Doom a few months ago. You can definitely see the nintendo influence on id: E1M4 could be a Zelda level.

Replayed Quake 2.

Back in 2005 or 2006 when i played it for the first time (coming off from Half-Life, RTCW and such) i was like "wtf is that, i thought ID supposed to be all-time great grandmasters of FPS genre, why does their game feel like boring crap". Since then i played and loved original Quake, and after reading about Q2 here i decided to give it another shot.

Welp, it's still boring. And easy. I should've probably picked Hard+.

Wouldn't really change all that much.

Oh well, it does have two interesting weapons (CG and HB) and I guess Strogg base texture work is nice if monotonous.

Other than that it has been shat on by pretty much every major FPS since and quite a few prior.
It's YamagiQ2 source port btw.
So that's how you have unfiltered textures and coloured lighting.

Chrono Cross

As a big fan of Chrono Trigger, I tried several times to get into Chrono Cross. It might be a good game on its own, but man it's shit compared to CT.

It's fine. The main problem is the lack of character development. Bland. Boring. Generic.

Well that's what happens when you try to shoehorn 100 different characters into a game. That wasn't the only issue for me though. I found the combat boring as well.

Rockman Zero. A half baked idea with some terrible design choices.

The short version is that after X6, they realize that zero was HIV positive (Zigma virus) so they quarantine the fuck out of him and a lot of shit happens.
Some bimbo named Ciel wakes you up cause the future is some Orwellian dystopian shithole run by X.

Z3CbPOH.png

Basically a lot of plot-heavy shit that's impossible to cover. Instead here's the audio drama

B-bakana kono X da!!

yeah, fuck the angel form. I hate Z1. I can't believe how my brain blocked all those painful memories of how shit this game was. Storywise? yeah, it's good.

Edit:

Megaman zero II is a massive improvement over the first one. No longer you have to extra grind for upgrades. It's more polished and fun.

The conclusion of the retarded front attack against Neo-Arcadia planned by glorious reploid leader of the resistance.

TLDR; The three guardians fuck them up real hard.

To be concluded!

Still... X4 is, in my opinion, peak Megaman x / zero.

Once more unto the Kenshi. Some end-game spoilers below.
JV9WCqV.jpg

In this playthrough I specifically set out to piss off every faction simultaneously. I raided every major town and village I found; none could stand against my fifty-strong Codexian Company. As such, I (almost fatally) underestimated the bugmen, who took exception to the murder of their only queen. By this point I'd already destroyed the Southern Hive, so what I expected them to do was go all apeshit like the rest of the fogmen. However, scarcely had we waded out of the acid ocean when the entire nation of Hivers descended upon the wounded men and women of Codex Company. Below is the aftermath. We did not win this one, alas.
KBJ4GNB.jpg

Fortunately, my garrison in the Fog Islands was not far away, so there were no losses. After this we left our base behind, for there was but one great enemy that could still offer us a challenge. The one who dwells in the Ashlands to the south.
9BzJssM.jpg

ZAXsawB.jpg

Acid rain and rabid skeletons assail us day and night in the southern lands. Defeat means a ride in the peeler machines.
wjPsG8Q.jpg

I always wanted a snowy biome in Kenshi. I guess this is the closest we can get.
udUPMvG.jpg

Only the hardiest of the company make it through the armies of the Second Empire, not to mention the clouds of toxic gas that cover parts of the Ashlands. Here begins the final battle as the much diminished Codexian Company battles the screeching Skeletons of Cat-Lon in the underground domes. Miraculously, none of our men fall and the Skeletons are either destroyed or chased off with limbs hacked off. Now comes the hard part.
0O32Dlh.jpg

Cat-Lon's every swing seems to sever an arm or a leg. Those who haven't been with the company too long are usually snuffed out by the second stroke of his sword. But ultimately, even the greatest warrior cannot last against thirty determined fighters hacking away at him. In the end, there can be only one.
