Best method for that is to use a tank as a spotter. Sonic Tanks (once you get them) are IDEAL for this task.

I already lost one to a Disrupter Pulse Launcher. At $850,000 a pop I'd prefer not to replace them too often :P at this point in the game many aliens are packing DPLs.

The completed areas (the entirety of House Telvanni plus the northernmost part of House Indoril) do have NPCs with quests, though the distribution is uneven; the more southerly portion should have additional work done. You can also explore the entirety of the lands controlled by House Redoran, plus a large part of House Indoril (outside the Sacred East) and House Hlaalu, but only the exteriors and a small portion of the interiors are finished, not NPCs or quests.

The only advice I can give to that is "don't overextend yourself".

The way I did it (disclaimer: 20+ year-old memories) was to use the tank as a spotter only, I rarely fired with it. You get a lot of AP which should be enough to let you peek out, look around, then take cover. If targets are spotted, pick one and let the rest of the squad peek out to take potshots at it with "Zee Beeg Gons" before retreating back into cover.

The primary goal of the tank when dealing with Tentaculats is to act as bait. When you've gotten familiar with Alien Base/Alien Artifact layouts you can easily tell early on if it's safe to leave your tank exposed. Out there in the darkness it's mostly Hallucinoids and Tentaculats, and their melee attacks rarely do any real damage against tanks. If you start close to the alien base, however, you'll have to deal with Aquatoids and Tasoths on top of that, and you know already how effective tank bait is under those circumstances.

Later on, inside the Artifact Sites, you'll learn to recognize (via trial and error) which areas of the base house the Tentaculats, and let your tank take point in those areas. (Hint: They hide in small 2x2 alcoves two floors above ground level.) IIRC Tentaculats do not appear in Alien Bases.

It's also worth mentioning that I "abused" the game somewhat to lessen my financial troubles, so I at least could afford to lose the occasional tank. I could NOT afford to lose my veteran soldiers.

Cleared it with 1 dead aquanaut, score 1772, over 30 dead aliens (I left when I got bored of hunting down the stragglers). Was rushed by 6-7 Tentaculats at once on the lower level. Aside from that it wasn't too bad, with the Displacer soaking most of the alien shots. Seems the Tasoth Leaders dying panicked the rest, so they didn't get a chance to use their MC.

Hmm, shot down a battleship with Xarquids on it. Odd, considering the game said it was on a surface attack.

Interesting, since under most circumstances I don't even encounter Xarquids. In all of my TFTD playthroughs I think I've managed to frag, bag and tag a Xarquid ONCE.

There's a Xarquid acting as a doorman of sorts right at the end of the second part of the Final Mission, but there's no time to study them at that point.

The xarquids can only spawn if you down and reclaim a Tasoth terror ship. They replace the dino weapons platforms cuz these can't survive underwater.

It was a Gillman ship. Tasoths come with Triscenes and Bio-Drones (land) or Tentaculats (underwater) as far as I know.

The games are two short investigation games with simple RPG combat and progression mechanisms. They are simple games but they are relatively interesting and unique, the investigation in a small contained place with few characters involved is cool with a nice atmosphere and the mechanisms are simple but they work. Overall I think the second game is a little better than the first one, especially because you have got a proper inventory in the second game while you haven't in the first one (the similar presentation is misleading).
