The support for RetroArch shaders is a nice addition. *However*, they've added support only for the GLSL stuff, which was deprecated like 5 years ago... Most new shader development is concentrated around the forward-looking SLANG format that can be cross-compiled to any backend *at runtime (!)* (OpenGL, DX 10/11/12, Vulkan, etc.)

Better than nothing, but they've painted themselves into a corner with that decision (admittedly, it was the easiest route... but not the best).

Was anyone able to get ScummVM to recognize newly supported games (Obsidian and Eastern Mind in my case)? I tried adding multiple versions of the games, with different methods, and none seem to work. Never had this problem with ScummVM, and I must have like 50 titles in my library.

On a side note - gee, what shader do you guys think would work best for most of ScummVM library?

Great news regarding shaders. Even if it's not optimal to support just the deprecated GLSL path, it's still light years better than what was available previously. I haven't tried them yet, but I would probably use a modified version of CRT-Guest (the most recent is CRT-Guest_Advanced, but I think it's only available in .slang, so I'll probably have to use the older CRT-Guest-DrVenom) with a visible aperture grille mask to mimic the Trinitron tube monitor I used back in the day.

Obsidian has been working fine here ever since they added support for it a few SVNs ago. What version of the game are you trying? I used the original, 5-disc release. I'm not aware of any re-releases.
Make sure you've copied all of these files:
  • Obsidian.exe
  • Obsidian.c95
  • RSGKit.r95
  • MCURSORS.C95
  • Obsidian Data 1.MPL
  • Obsidian Data 2.MPX
  • Obsidian Data 3.MPX
  • Obsidian Data 4.MPX
  • Obsidian Data 5.MPX
  • Obsidian Data 6.MPX

These are my favourites too, I love Guest's work, and he's a very nice guy. I'm using the original DX-only incarnation of Guest-DrVenom in WinUAE as my standard shader.

Tyvm. I copied the files from the disk, just like yesterday, except this time... It worked. Either my PC went full retard, or I seriously need to take a break.

Launched the game for a bit. Had no idea its full FMV. Seems real curious.

I love it, played it on release. Puzzles are really great. It's one of my favourite first person adventure games.

Dunno if you got Eastern Mind working yet or not, but with Macintosh titles you need to follow these instructions. Haven't tried it with Eastern Mind yet, but with another game, Refixion, one that isn't officially supported yet, it mostly works well. (and the failures that are there I mostly attribute to a terrible rip of the game disc, one of the music tracks is missing from the only rip online and good luck finding another copy)

Tyvm! I got the windows version to run. Really dont know why, or what was the problem with both Eastern Mind and Obsidian.

ScummVM shaders integration is a nice feature, too bad it is painful to test which one is the best...I hope there will be a shortcut key to switch between all of them in game, like in Retroarch for example.

ScummVM 2.9.0 "Close Encounters of the 2.9th Kind" has landed

Almost one year after the last major release, and just in time for Christmas, ScummVM 2.9.0 - "Close Encounters of the 2.9th Kind" has landed. Amongst its gifts, you will find 15 newly supported games and a new supported platform.

New games

  • The Adventures of the Good Soldier Schweik
  • Backyard Basketball
  • Castle Master
  • Marvellous Mice Adventures: Meeting Sea Rat
  • Marvellous Mice Adventures: Sea Rat's Birthday
  • Mask Show
  • Moonbase Commander
  • Orion Burger
  • Rise of the Dragon
  • The Space Bar
  • Thimbleweed Park[^1]
  • Total Eclipse
  • Total Eclipse 2
  • Unrest
  • Wait for it! Issue 3. Song for a Hare

New platform

ScummVM now has an official Sailfish OS port. While we are waiting for official builds to appear, adventurous users are welcome to build their own and very personalized copy!

Notable engine enhancements

The AGS engine has been brought up to version 3.6.1.30 from upstream, which adds support for some recently released games, such as Stranger in Utopia, The Phantom Fellows, and It Takes Two to Tangle.

Keymapper support was added to more than 20 engines, allowing customization of the keys, mouse buttons, and joystick buttons used to play the games.

The SCI engine benefits from numerous script fixes for various games and an impressive speech repair feature for Gabriel Knight 1 CD.

The SCUMM engine sees graphics and audio improvements for the Macintosh version of several games.

Notable platform enhancements

The macOS release for recent Intel and Apple Silicon systems has been signed and notarized, so it has been accepted by Apple Gatekeeper.

The Android release now supports Android 15 and has improved gamepad support.

The iOS release adds support for the Apple Pencil, which was one of the most requested features.

The full release notes contain a comprehensive summary of the changes and enhancements.

On our downloads page, you can find the downloads for various platforms. The iOS version is available in the Apple App Store and the Android versions should soon be available in the Google Play Store (once the update has been approved). If you are using Windows, macOS, or either the Ubuntu Snap or Flatpak packages, the autoupdater will assist you in updating to ScummVM 2.9.0.

Our macOS users with a 64-bit Intel Mac and a macOS version between 10.9 and 10.12 will need to download manually the new update from our downloads page using the "Mac OS X 10.9+ Intel 64 Bits (without Sparkle) Disk Image" download. The version downloaded using the auto-update feature now requires macOS 10.13 or above.

Play the games, and enjoy ScummVM with a hot cup of grog[^2]!

[^1]: Thimbleweed Park is only supported on a subset of platforms as it requires OpenGL with Shaders.[^2]: Other beverages available.
