Element Aeros: A wind elemental spirit. One of the four classical elements that all matter in the world is composed of and a low-level body of energy. Possessing the phases of "hot" and "wet" which promotes the binding of forms, it is a basic element which brings about increase.

Tyrant Loki: An evil god of Norse myth. He is not only a wicked god, but excels at being fickle and cunning. Although he once entered an agreement with the chief god Odin becoming sworn brothers, he was found guilty of many wrongdoings and was finally punished.

Holy Chimera: A monster with the heads of a lion and a male goat and the tail of a snake. It was originally a holy beast representative of the seasons, but in the midst of being taken into Greek myth, it was looked down upon as a ferocious monster.

Brute Sui-Ki: One of the Four Oni used by Fujiwara no Chikata, a noble of legend who quelled Iga and Ise Provinces during the Heian Period. He can cause floods anywhere, and is a powerful summoned being with the power to drown his enemies. In the Taiheiki, it was said he was dispersed after hearing a certain poem by Ki-no-Tomoo.

I hope this works on emulators. Although I still have to finish playing SMT 4 Apocalypse, I tried the base game of that but I didn't like it, but I read the expansion was much better.

It's not an expansion, it's a new game. Think of SMT4 as "Episode 1" and SMT4A as "Episode 2". SMT4A is a direct sequel to the Neutral Ending of SMT4. And yes it's generally much better than SMT4 (despite the tone change).

Shin Megami Tensei V is an excellent Switch exclusive worthy of its name, with the game feeling like the natural next step in the long-running series while introducing new elements that elevate it above even its contemporaries while not straying too far from its roots, offering fans a must-play experience and for everyone else, a JRPG worth jumping into.

Digital Trends - DeAngelo Epps - 4.5 / 5 stars

Shin Megami Tensei 5 is yet another gem for the Nintendo Switch that every JRPG fan needs to check out.

Gamepur - Junior Miyai - 9 / 10

I have now spent over 50 hours playing Shin Megami Tensei V — a game that I adore, but also one with a few faults. This RPG on the Nintendo Switch will bind you in its tangled, storied web of angels versus demons, of power struggles to see who will take the Throne of God, but the web is marred by some unfortunate navigation and technical issues.

GamingTrend - David Flynn - 90 / 100

Shin Megami Tensei V is a masterfully made JRPG and fascinating work of art. While the characters could have used more fleshing out and the leveling curve is wildly uneven, it's still incredibly fun with thrilling combat and a gripping plot.

God is a Geek - Chris White - 8.5 / 10

Shin Megami Tensei V has a deep and satisfying combat system making every fight a challenge, as well as an engaging story and great visuals.

Hardcore Gamer - Adam Beck - 4 / 5

Shin Megami Tensei V is one of the best RPGs of 2021.

Hey Poor Player - Kenny McKee - 4.5 / 5

It’s not a stretch to say that Shin Megami Tensei V has set a new standard for JRPGs. It’s amazing to see how far along this series has come since the initial inception of Megami Tensei, and the fact that ATLUS can continue to improve the series without compromising its core features. Shin Megami Tensei V has been a long time coming, but the wait has absolutely been worth it—and I’m more excited than ever to watch the SMT franchise continue to grow.

IGN - Leana Hafer - 8 / 10

Shin Megami Tensei V's excellent JRPG combat and deeply rewarding customization shine bright, even when it sometimes feels like Persona without the heart.

Nintendo Life - Mitch Vogel - 9 / 10

Shin Megami Tensei V is a modern masterpiece. It successfully delivers on all the aspects that have made the series thus far so popular with fans-namely through its high difficulty, heavy narrative themes, and expansive team-building options-while polishing up and tightening the weaker aspects. Things like a more easily navigable map and more difficulty options to cater to players of all skill levels comfortably make this the most approachable entry in the series, and it feels like there's more things to do in the world than ever before. If you are at all a fan of RPGs or have been looking for a good entry point into this oft overlooked series, we would strongly encourage you to pick this up as soon as you can. Shin Megami Tensei V was worth the wait, Atlus has successfully stuck the landing with this one.

NintendoWorldReport - Donald Theriault - 9 / 10

Now that we've finally closed the book on the 2017 Switch presentation, I think Shin Megami Tensei V might be my favourite game to emerge from that show. That's not a comparison I make lightly given the other games that appeared that night, but for my money and time it was worth the wait. Pokemon might be ending the year of RPGs on Switch, but SMT V is the best monster catcher for your buck yet.

Prima Games - Lucas White - 9 / 10

If I could describe the latest MegaTen joint with one phrase, it would have to be “a lot.” This game is a lot.

Shacknews - Donovan Erskine - 8 / 10

Wccftech - 9.5 / 10

Featuring a new approach to exploration and extremely solid gameplay, Shin Megami Tensei V masterfully balances innovation and tradition to offer an excellent JRPG experience. While the technical issues can get in the way, the game's quality is so high that most will be willing to look past them, as Shin Megami Tensei V is one of the best entries in the series and one of the best JRPGs released in 2021.

Worth Playing - Chris "Atom" DeAngelus - 9 / 10

Shin Megami Tensei V is pretty much the sequel that fans have been waiting for. There are a few potentially controversial decisions, such as the emphasis on an open-world area instead of the franchise classic dungeons, but they ended up working out in the end. The gameplay was fun from start to finish, and the 40-hour runtime seemed to fly by thanks to excellent pacing. If you liked Nocturne but wished it were more modern, SMT5 is the game you've been waiting for.
General score seems to be "It's not persona 5/10"

Persona is Shin Megami Tensei with a heart.

Most SMT games have dungeon gimmicks, such as one-way doors or teleportals, and SMTV is no different — in execution, at least. There are no one-way doors as far as I’ve experienced, but with ingenious level design, there are plenty of one-way cliffs. This does require you to mentally note where certain elevation access points are located for each and every map, so this can be a pain point for many.

as well as "new approach to exploration" in the summary of Wccftech suggest that dungeon-crawling fans will indeed be disappointed, so there's that.

My team has the sexiest and deadliest waifus you can recruit.
The IGN review read out like it was written by someone who has never played a dungeon crawler. Interestingly enough it also stated that there are 3 endings so Chaos, Neutral and Law routes are probably a thing.

Jirae Kodama: A plant spirit mentioned in Japanese lore. The act that sounds like voices that echo in the mountains is known as "kodama suru," but this phenomenon was formerly thought of as Kodama replying.

Herald Michael: One of the four Archangels at the pinnacle of angel hierarchy and the highest ranked angel whose name means "who is like God." A most supreme being requested by God Himself to act as his right-hand man, he holds in his hand a mystic weapon that can overcome any blade it meets.

Looks like kino is back on the menu boys.
I hate it how Persona and SMT has become corrupted and associated with degenerate lunatics. Did all of this happen due Persona 5?

Also, the MC being girly-looking (and using a tranny for what little voice he has to boot, bad idea IMO) but the reviewers complaining no-one uses "they" to refer to him is sad.

Reminds me of how in Gundam the writer wanted to make a girl (just for variety, not politics or anything) as a protagonist for one of the shows but was always denied, so he trolled the higher-ups by giving the protagonist/s girly names, or even better: Write Loran Cehack, a weirdo tan-skinned boy that actually crossdresses to infiltrate a ball. He's not gay though, seeing he blushes when the love interest of his giving attention to him, but I remember some lunatics thinking Loran was asexual because he didn't react when one girl he DOES NOT like was in close contact with him.

It's just woke westerners being ignorant of foreign cultures. Those types haven't grasped the fact that the standard marketable male character for Japanese (and East Asia in general) is notably more androgynous if not outright more effeminate compared to their equivalent in similar western media. And stuff like crossdressers in anime tend to be joke characters or fetish bait. The woke westoid sees something with lip gloss, immediately think it's an alphabet person and gets massively offended if other people don't share their tonal deafness.

So excited for this. Funny how SMT still filters Persona trannies.

TBH, I like Persona and SMT quite a lot. I can understand the distaste for Persona as the gameplay is less "pure", but I got into RPGs because of stuff like KOTOR, and Persona does that kind of RPG better than anyone else right now. I've always greatly enjoyed having a cast of memorable companions to explore a world with, and getting to know them better as the game goes on. I still prefer a medieval fantasy backdrop to modern-day Tokyo, but Persona scratches that itch very well.

I hope this works on emulators. Although I still have to finish playing SMT 4 Apocalypse, I tried the base game of that but I didn't like it, but I read the expansion was much better.
SMT4 is pretty good. The characters are a total snore, but the fusing and combat are top-notch. The world map is pretty bad, and nowhere near as fun to explore as Nocturne, but despite the flaws, it was enjoyable.

Apocalypse was much better, and I liked SMTIV.

What should I expect from Switch emulation on PC? I'm not going to buy a switch just for this game.

Switch emulation is pretty decent. I'd just wait for the inevitable FitGirl repack.

Fitgirl is for people with extremely low data caps. I would never deal with her massive amounts of compression and super long install times for something like a Switch rom.
