The difference is that midbudget single player games genuinely have no other way to get funded without patronage. There is not a publisher or venture capital out there that is just dying to give Obsidian or w/e money so they can make just enough profit on a 3-4 million dollar game that looks like something from 2000 so they can triumphantly make another 3-4 million dollar game that looks like something from 2000 until they fuck up a couple games in a row and the company implodes. Quasi-MMOs for tablets/android/iOS with addiction-exploiting microtransactions can exist without Kickstarter.
You're probably right, but that doesn't mean that a game funded on Kickstarter shouldn't be owned by those who funded it, or at least profits should be shared with those who funded it, or maybe even it should be freely licensed for all to use. Currently developers on Kickstarter get away with having the cake, eating it and selling it too.
Agreed, which is why I'm against kickstarter. Either we are commissioning a piece of software or we are investing in it, both of which is much different to just pre-ordering a product.

I seriously never understood MMORPGs. How do they even work ?
I mean, it's either :
-play with friends, and in that case, you have to keep on playing the same schedule as them, else you're getting underpowered, are dragging them down, and are a nuisance to their gaming experience.
-go in some random place, shout "I NEED PRIST 4 TAXOTJAR DUNGEON OF DEATH JOIN ME " , end up with a motherfucking idiot.
-Play alone.

At first when I read this I thought you were projecting the image of a homely biodrone woman snacking on her 5th creme filled doughnut fantasizing she'd find a boyfriend through an MMO...... then I realize it was you and you weren't projecting. :codexisfor:

Considering that the only people who play mmos wear fedoras and unironically use the word "m'lady" I think not

taxalot it's pretty clear that MMOs aren't actually designed for asocials. They cater to the market that likes doing everything else in life too.
Actually all games are designed for asocial shutin nerds, everything is worthless, death is certain.

I just can't wait for the inevitable round 2 of Richard Garriott vs. his fans when they figure out some game-breaking exploit and Garriott decides he can put those punks back in their place...and ends up getting served again.

Iolo in da house:

OMG!!! It's a 3D Iolo playing Stones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually that was kind of cool. So sayeth the Ultima geek.

I thought it was very cool actually. I just wished it had more to do with the game itself. Right now, I have a lot of trouble believing we will meet any NPC in game half as fun as Iolo was. It seems to me they are going to rely on real people to provide cool NPCs. And the problem with that is that most people will make characters way less interesting than Iolo...

He casually waves nostalgia about from his brilliant single player games to promote his shit MMO kickstarter. EA have taught this man well.

Since when is it unethical to exploit idiots? Dont know why some people get so upset that he asks for money although he already is a filthy rich man. Is it so hard to expect from the gamer part of mankind to be actually smart enough to decide for themselves what they do with their money?

Not sure if this was posted as there are so many threads on the same topic but this is eye opening: http://www.portalarium.com/index.php/ultimate-rpg?id=93

It is clear to me that I, Richard Garriott, am an essential ingredient of at least the Ultimate Ultima, if not more broadly the Ultimate RPG. Perhaps one day, now that the people who pushed me out of EA more than a decade ago are long since gone, EA will recognize that together, we could rebuild that franchise in a way that they have failed to do in the intervening years. Richard Garriott is an essential ingredient in the Ultimate Ultima!

I would argue that Tabula Rasa strove to be a worthy Ultimate RPG. While the game was set in a new world, with new ideals, it attempted to live up to the above ideals. While we may have fallen short in some areas, I hope most can see that was our goal and we might have reached it in time. While it included real time combat, so had many Ultimas. Also, it was a future setting, as were many Ultimas. As I have said before many play styles and settings can be part of the Ultimate RPG.

But, please be understanding. It took 25 years to craft all the detail in Ultima. The new world will start smaller, thinner and lighter. It will have fewer features than some or most MMOs. Critical elements of the story I have just told may be missing upon launch. But fear not, this is where we are headed. Come play with us in the brave new world. Help us grow it. Teach us about what you have learned in your years of playing. Invite in your new friends who are new to gaming. They will be a new spirit and provide new ideas about what to do. They will likely not tolerate bad instructions, bad interface or huge upfront fees, which is a good thing! We will teach and learn from them as well.

Think I'll be withdrawing my pledge... :keepmymoney:

Yeah, that's actually a very old document. I remember reading it last year or maybe even in 2011.
