From their dev blog. I'd take the old 16-colour art on the left if I had a choice. I find the lighting effects a little bit garish.

Maybe they'll provide a toggle option? Or the lighting effects are painted over the scenario? I can't tell. If they're not hard-painted over they should most definitely provide a toggle to turn it off.

Yeah, I've never liked engine-level lighting effects in 2D games, for the most part. It's fine if it's baked in as a special effect of a level or specific art, but when it's just 3D/particles layering on a 2D image I find it detracts from the illusion the 2D image is trying to create.

Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy Bubbles In Memoria
What I'm concerned about is effect of various graphics style changes to other content creation.
Is campaign good? Is content front loaded with most interesting stuff happening in few early areas? etc.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I for one like the new look. I don't care about it looking retro as much as I care about it feeling retro. Just make me think and write stuff down. Graphics purism is a brand of autism that has nothing to do with good game design.

I can understand complaints, but I don't think the lighting looks that bad. Shadows and darkness have real consequences and influence gameplay, which is a major positive. I appreciated having to deal with, or even use them in the demo.
