Ok final update to my PSVR escapade on PC.
After spending some i sold it half a year ago for about 1300zl ($ = 3.77zl right now) where i bought it for 1350zl so about half a year worth of PSVR cost me 50zl (seriously i will never ever buy expensive hardware to stay with me from now on)
Well after that half a year i bought it again 3 weeks ago but this time for 600zl which is about $162 in freedom money. Caveat was that it came without headphones which you can switch to any headphones really. Reason why i bought it again ? Price and TrinusPSVR (software which handles PSVR on PC) got decent update. With one camera you can have now positional tracking, it doesn't work perfect but it allows for leaning and general 3D tracking without much of a problem. Caveat is that in current alpha stage doesn't correctly track front forward movement but this is planet as well as support for 2 cameras for proper PSVR from PS4 like tracking. So past month i have been playing some more VR, mainly Elite. Game is non VR is shit but in VR it changes completely game to bearable status.
Here are some general tips for using PSVR with PC:
- If reset button sets incorrectly view you need to run "run steam vr setup" by right clicking steam vr and choosing that option. You need to do that if you change your head angle, sometimes trinus can get a bug where for some reason it change default sitting position. (this is why i previously had to do yaw setting which is wrong btw). Correct way is just to run Steam Vr setup for it to recalibrate.
- Steam VR games don't run more than 90Hz. PSVR has 60hz and 120hz native mode. 90hz mode is possible but from my testing it doesn't actually run smooth as it should. So most of the time you will be looking at 60hz gaming. To run properly 90hz you need monitor that is capable of 90hz as PSVR does not allow for direct mode, which means refresh rate of monitor needs to be same as psvr which is i think reason why 90hz doesn't work correctly on PSVR while 120hz does (i have only 60hz tv). So to use correctly 90hz you need also monitor capable of 90hz then it should run without problem. My tv only has 60hz so i was locked to 60hz or 120hz (double of 60hz)
- If you run AMD gpu, you need to switch color mode to ycbm 4:4:4 while on Nvidia GPU (980 for me) you need to set custom resolution because by default GPU want to use limited color space to both displays in extended mode. With custom res it forces on PSVR proper color reproduction (without this change many of PSVR games on PC will have gradient problems and you will often see complete black spots where you were expecting gradient)
Reason why this is last update ?
This is why :
Found Vive for awesome 1999zl which is about $540, comes with everything without caveats.
I sold PSVR for 750zl, yes i sold it for more than i bought it lol. Which means overall i am 100zl+ for my 7 months of fucking around with VR.
Reasons why i went for VIVE:
- good deal. $540 might sound a lot and frankly it is but any other deal was about 2500zl and usually with problems, better ones those without problems 2700-3000zl. So deal was pretty fucking great.
- Wanted to finally try room scale, i am not a fan of motion gaming but i at least need to try it, reason is that if i don't like it i will just sell it like PSVR which basically means it will cost me more or less nothing. Some games also require steam/oculus controllers and i don't want to spend much on moves for PSVR and again hit my CPU with another tracking.
- Proper plug in and play system. While PSVR on PC is ULTRA cheap it comes with caveats and some fucking around. Performance also isn't the best because it doesn't support direct mode which means performance hit is way higher than for VIVE. While my i5-3570k and gtx980 combo works on almost everything my main use of PSVR was Assetto Corsa to race and with 22 cars and 2x supersampling to get proper distance view it can get choppy.
- Better FOV. It isn't huge but HTC vive has around 110 FOV while PSVR 100 and vive has a lot more vertical fov. The more FOV the better. Honestly i can't wait for next get 140-150FOV headsets and next next gen 210FOV ones. FOV changes everything, racing game with 100 FOV is completely different to racing game on your monitor which nets you around 30-40FOV at best.
- Better resolution. 2 display vs 1 shared. While generally internal resolution is more important than just screen itself from my testing, final clarity of image does rest on screen limitation. From what i heard all VR headsets are blurry but my experience with PSVR is pretty positive and as long as you set high enough supersampling it is not as blurry and you can definitely get used to it.
- Proper 3D head tracking. PSVR for PC has that recently natively in Trinus but still needs some work. From what i heard both VIVE and OCULUS tracking is fantastic.
edit:
Final note. IS PSVR worth on PC ? Imo yes, especially now that they are very cheap used.
So far top games i played on it everyone should try:
1. Resident Evil 7 idk when PC will have patch if at all but so far this is the best VR game i played. Played it on standard PS4 resolution was kind of shit but it was still amazing game.
2. Fallout New Vegas with VorpX software on PC. It is not really VR title but software stack called VorpX gives it proper head tracking and proper 3D effect and it runs smooth as butter. Honestly speaking this is what sold me to VR future.
The moment when you get out of dock house is where you notice difference. Dock house is on small hill and for the first time in gaming i actually felt i was standing on hill. Exploring caves, derelict houses etc in VR is just amazing and honestly speaking if Betsheda would release native version of it in VR i would buy it in heart beat. I also used Tale of Two wastelands and i must say that while Fallout 3 as an RPG is shit but in VR look much better mostly thanks to verticality of their location design. FNV is mostly flat while F3 is non stop walking up or down which works a lot better in VR.
3. Assetto Corsa, Racing in VR with proper wheel (T300RS) is something i though never i would experience myself but here we are and it is real. I would love more FOV (something like 210) but honestly even at 100FOV it is simply fantastic and playing racing game without VR is completely different experience, like masturbating vs real sex. Without VR you don't "feel" speed, you can't look at mirrors to see if cars are behind you or near, without VR you need to learn timing when you need to press brake instead of learning judging distance, blind corners are not blind with VR as it only need head movement in right or left and even going up the hill in LagunaSeca is no longer questiong of timing but just rising your head up a little to see end of uphill part or cockscrew is very easy now isntead of being blind corner without Vr.
Racing in VR is far easier and feels a lot more amazing that on your normal screen.
4.
Elite. I bought it near release to play decent space sim and it left me angry with how fucking boring that game was. Amazing space simulator with complete husk of gameplay. I even bought season pass... I played it for like 10 hours and never touched it again. Until i bought VR because game has native VR implementation. And oh my oh my how it changed the game, yes on the surface it is still boring ass game but thanks to VR things before that were fascinating for 5 minutes (like watching stars when you get out of frameshift) in VR never case to amaze me, stations, combat etc. Everything "clicks" in VR. Especially combat, i never have to fiddle with my gamepad trying to search for target, i just move my head around and i always know where enemy is, it feels amazing to dogfight in VR. Which is why my opinion changed. In VR it is worth playing because everything feels amazing in VR. Docking in station aside from first 10 maybe 20 times in non VR is amazing because each time thanks to 3D depth i see shitload of detail that went into interiors, i can perfectly judge distance while flying and i can finally see SIZE. On monitor you can't feel size at all. With VR if something is big you will be looking at it with your jaws on the floor.
5. Dragon's Dogma. VorpX. It is not perfect as it has issues with shadows and game is mostly third person but my god it feels amazing to play it with proper depth thanks to 3D. Game by itself i fun as hell but with VR it takes the cake.
