Also, food critics go to a restaurant in secret; they don't get free food. Okay? Okay.
unlike food it's kinda hard and stupid to prepare a special version of a game with better content to be handed out to critics alone while the public get the mundane shitty one...
Aliens something something.

Hands-off previews are easier to fake compared to creating actual "fake" gameplay.

Various kickstarter people have talked about how most early "gameplay" videos actually aren't.

I actually giggled a few times during those 13 minutes, which I can't say about any of the new south park episodes.

Wasn't interested in it before but I found that vid enterteining. If this game will be successful it will teach persuade people that turn based combat can be fun.
What's the deal between Obsidian and publisher. Do they got any bonuses based on sell number/ratings?

That's not something people need to be persuaded of. jRPG-style combat (which this game has) never died out in the way it did for cRPG's.

It was funny at the time, but the TV show.. well... that sort of humor gets old rather quickly. This being an RPG is interesting, but it will take a lot of detailed character development and difficult fights based on that development to get me to even consider it. Gay jokes and animations of dancing shit just doesn't do it for me.

Pretty much.

I mean I'm happy for Obsidian if they make enough money to put food on their shelves but...eh.

I like South Park, but not that much.

I like South Park too. Not as much as before, but I like it. Still, I never thought "man, i'd totally wished this shit was interactive". So yeah, I have no real interest in a South Park episode with tacked on button pushing.

You could say I'm with Hepler on this one, the button pushing only gets in the way.

Honestly, that review copy thing is a valid concern.

Independent reviewers don't get free copies. You can try to explain and justify it up and down but people like me will always consider it a blow to credibility.

Of course in the end, the Codex's 'opinion' on a game rarely comes from the Codex Review, as we have many members that have different opinions and a view on a game here is only as good as looking at all the various takes on it and, by filtering them through your own value system, distilling what's important to you.

Also, food critics go to a restaurant in secret; they don't get free food. Okay? Okay.
They don't pay for it either. It's called an expense account.

the mods should put aside a little expense account and get games to try like that. then the shitty parts of games will stand out and the good parts too because it isn't muddied by "oh well it was free for us"

it's not about not paying for a game, it's about getting a review copy. you know - play it before retail launch? that would be the value we'd be looking for.

you must be a sad poor fellow if you think we're looking for freebies for the sake of freebies.

the restaurant allegory is bullshit.

Hormalakh have you ever read a codex review where we've gone "oh but it was free for us so overall it's okay 10/10"
you're growing to become the most stupid person on this website. impressive feat.

shut your whore mouth. nobody ever says "overall it's okay 10/10." but you're deluding yourself if you think free copies have no effect on reviews. did you look at those links I put in here or are you talking out of your ass again?

tuluse, why would i donate to a site when they're getting free "review" copies of games? i don't donate money to whores.

In Italy famous chef-critics enter in restaurant with "red carpet"...:smug:

But, ok, let's discuss it seriously for a moment...

Publishers need publicity/advertising for selling shit and paying developers and marketingman/PR...it's a job.
Professional network/website/blogs need audience to attract banner/ad/sponsor and paying reviewers, webmaster/designers and eventually PR...it's a job.
Indie reviewer/simple blogger need no audience at all, because it isn't a job...it's a passion in the freetime and there aren't salaries for them or real costs to cover (just a little compared to professionals).
But users/internetz people (in this case videogamers) need, expect (and pretend) a lots of opinions, news, contents to stay in tune with their passion...without difference between "pro or indie"...
Opinions/news/contents = preview/review/interview/editorials/etc...it's a lot of work. Not a joke. It's a real job without salaries for someone.
And normally Job = you produce contents, this contents make me earn money --> I pay you for them. Right?

So what's the problem here?
The problem is that today internet offers A MASSIVE quantity of free contents without asking to pay a fucking nothing to final users...
And these final users PRETEND continuosly a lots of FREE contents on internet, without thinking about the problems hidden behind or the differences between indie blog or professional network...

Now, I'm the first that think about the ridicolous "Doritos' Gate" and get hungry for that shit in the actually situation of professional VG journalism (so it's not my intention to justify that shit), but here we need to clarify just a little bit this argument, without making a classic "mishmash", confusing who are the "good guys" and who are the "bad guys"...
A professional network has a lots of intererests in good relationship with publishers/devs...
An indie reviewer has no problem in this case: if a free keys arrived is good, otherwise no problem...fuck them and fuck the final user thet PRETEND shit...when there will be a possibility of having the game in hand, he can write a review...end of story.
Zero interests. Zero Doritos. Zero Mafia.

sure they have. you're less likely to be upset about the negative sides of something if you got it for free, but the way the dex is set up essentially works as a mechanism for peer review. unlike other places people do get called out for writing bullshit, both positive and negative. you seem to think that just because one guy on the dex gets his copy for free, suddenly everybody including you becomes a corporate whore unable of critical thought... not to mention that we accept reviews and counter-reviews submitted by other users as long as they are well written.

I can understand why staff would want review copies like they got for MMXL. I think the perception problem comes from statements like this:

Infinitron probably something best discussed in private forum, but I do believe our favorable relations are with Limbic and not Ubi per se.

I don't think many posters here associate the Codex with cultivating 'favourable relations' with publishers or sending them emails asking for free games, we tend to think of Codex reviews along the lines of VD's famous Oblivion Review which debunked every bit of publisher hype and certainly wasn't the result of a favourable relationship with Bethesda.

If they want to send you free copies (without being asked) or fly Grunker off to conventions noone really expects you to turn it down, but if not why not just get one of the Codexers who're buying the game to write a review?

what you say is true about peer-review. and ultimately, the "reviewers" will establish themselves as trustworthy or untrustworthy based on what they write. The fear that one day the codex administration builds parasitic relationships between publishers, developers, and themselves does not become any less. The slippery slope argument follows from here.

At the very least, if people are going to write reviews based on relationships with these companies, the very least they could do is to do what everybody else does out there: declare their possible conflicts of interest.

If you paid money for something, you're more likely to try to justify the purchase.

we actually very rarely receive free copies, and when we do we usually hand them out to some codexer (that includes people not on staff) either known for their insight in the game series in question, or with a knack of writing good reviews.

donations go towards server costs, paying for xenforum addons/"enhancements" and hookers & blow. banking money to buy reviews would be stupid. unlike you (?) we're not poor third-worlders, we can pay and do pay for our games. this isn't a job and we're not self-proclaimed game journalists.

with all that in mind, the codex has never really been about getting first-hand looks and early reviews out. in fact, the standard codex review timing is often a year after release. the reasons for getting an early review would mostly be to show everybody how much more prestigious we are than the Watch and GB.

I don't know what to say to soothe your bursting anus. I'm sure my insults aren't helping, but you're so stupid I can't help myself.

Monty I didn't really want to discuss it with idiots like hormalakh around to blow things out of proportions, hence the "uh take it in private" remark. I was a little sarcastic saying 'favorable relations'. honestly, they don't give two fucks about us and we don't give two fucks about them. what I mean is 'they know of the codex and would respond to our e-mails'. as for what happens to SP, we will probably end up with some codexer reviewing their own copy of the game as per usual.
