A Splinter Cell remake is in development at Ubisoft Toronto, publisher Ubisoft announced. Platforms and a release date were not announced.

“Ubisoft has greenlit the development of a Splinter Cell remake that will draw from the rich canvas of the brand,” reads the announcement. “Led by Ubisoft Toronto, the game will be rebuilt from the ground up using Ubisoft’s own Snowdrop engine—the same engine being used to develop Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, as well as Ubisoft’s upcoming Star Wars game—to deliver new-generation visuals and gameplay, and the dynamic lighting and shadows the series is known for.”

Ubisoft Toronto is now hiring staff to work on the remake.

Watch a teaser trailer below. Read an interview with creative director Chris Auty, producer Matt WEst, and technical producer Peter Handrinos at the Ubisoft blog.

Remake. Come on, could have made something new while Michael Ironside is still alive. He already did some voice work for Ghost Recon and he sounded fine. Instead we get a story we already know... yawn.

Splinter Cell Remake Game Director is Leaving Ubisoft

The Splinter Cell Remake director, David Grivel, announces that he is leaving Ubisoft and accepting a new position at a different game company.

In what is sure to be a surprise to many, the Splinter Cell Remake game director, David Grivel, is leaving Ubisoft. Grivel has previously worked on other Ubisoft games, such as being the lead designer on Far Cry 6. The announcement of Grivel's departure came directly from himself on social media, after spending more than 10 years at Ubisoft Toronto, the studio currently working on the Splinter Cell Remake. The game has lost its director, a new director has not yet been named, and there has not been any information regarding how this departure will affect the work on the Splinter Cell Remake.

A remake of the original Splinter Cell was announced in December 2021, but after that, information on the upcoming title became scarce. Even though this new Splinter Cell is being made as a remake of the first entry, the developers confirmed there would be changes; the story for the Splinter Cell Remake is being rewritten for a modern audience. Now that the game has lost its director, fans of the series are likely skeptical on if this title will see the light of day, especially with losing a director as experienced as Grivel.

Grivel made the announcement regarding his departure on his official LinkedIn page. No specific reason was given for his departure from Ubisoft. Grivel also confirmed he is taking a new position at People Can Fly Studio as Creative Director. People Can Fly Studio is probably best known for collaborating with Epic Games on Gears of War: Judgment and Bulletstorm. The last released title in the Splinter Cell franchise was Splinter Cell: Blacklist back in 2013. A VR Splinter Cell title was in development but was canceled in July 2021.

While there is little information on what Grivel is working on next at People Can Fly Studio, Grivel's post details a lot of experience in the gaming industry. Grivel has worked on games such Dirty Racer and Far Cry Primal, so it appeared that the Splinter Cell Remake was going to be in capable and experienced hands. With a lot of titles in development at Ubisoft, hopefully a new director is named soon, and the project gets back on track. Though, recent developments at Ubisoft may be putting the Splinter Cell franchise in jeopardy.

It's been almost a decade since a new entry in the Splinter Cell franchise has seen the light of day. With the sudden departure of the game's director, fans can only hope that the game continues progress to release. While Splinter Cell has been a stealth heavy, single-player experience mostly, Ubisoft recently shut down the online services for a lot of its titles, including the previous Splinter Cell game. Hopefully, the departure of Grivel does not negatively impact the development of a long-awaited new entry in the Splinter Cell franchise.

A Splinter Cell remake is currently in development.

Is the first Splinter Cell considered good? I played it years after release, shortly after playing Thief for the first time, which probably created some bias, and I was really disappointed. Seemed way too linear and too forgiving, I just became bored and never finished it. In retrospect I kind of view it as the first true sign of patented Ubisoft decline. I've heard that Chaos Theory was much better, but this experience discouraged me from trying it.

The first Splinter Cell was good, though it was outmatched already by Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory was basically the peak of the series. The nu-releases that followed were either meh (Double Agent, Conviction) or OK (Black List).

Try CT. It's much improved on its predecessors. Linear with branching routes to spice things up —and some circular levels with a sandboxy feel—, more challenging if you go for 100% completion and astounding audiovisuals that haven't aged one bit.

As for the remake news, the director dropping out doesn't matter at all. Current UBI is not capable of putting a good product out there independently of personnel, they're instructed by top execs to cater to the lowest common denominator.

So many correct key words used, creating the impression that they listen to fans, having the same tastes and preferences as the fans...yeah, let's see how the remake ends up: SC1 story but with Blacklist gameplay. And that's the optimistic take. Things can always get worse. Oh wait, they did, because they're gonna modernize the story for today's sensibilities. Uh huh. Download your favorite games and put them on a disk or something. Preserve them, the historic revisionism for games is already in full swing.

A year after the announcement, and they still don't have a working prototype?

Yeah, it goes into BG&E2 and Skull & Bones bin.

I don't understand some fans. Like, yeah your favorite game is getting a remake (that sounds suspicious on its own, a remaster would be enough to get it playable on modern configurations) but you don't care who makes that remake, in what conditions, the social political context, movements, ideologies that can and will definitely affect the quality of the remake? I liked the first 4 SCs (DA version 2 however, not 1) but I'm not jumping with joy when a remake is announced. The same for Dead Space. WTF. Fans are so desperate for a new game that much that they don't care about it's potential, almost certain, flaws dictated by the above mentioned factors? What if Thief 1 and 2 will be getting remakes? Or UUW? Or any other classic game? We're supposed to go be happy just because it's getting (re)made? Modern fans are so...I don't even have a word.

Modern fans are just mindless consumers which follow the trends cause of FOMO.

They don't think. They don't want to think about the quality of the products. They just want to consume everything regardless of quality.

I know poor Romanians which have abonaments to utube, Netflix, HBO and Disney. They are dumb as fuck. They love the new God of War.

Eh, there are retards like this in every single country under the Sun. Show me one that doesn't.
But yeah, I guess the consumer mindset applies to these people. But to such degree...

I know.

What is the meaning of informed consumer?

An informed consumer is capable of making sensible decisions by gaining an insight about a product prior to its purchase. This insight equips the consumer with the data to arrive at an evidence based conclusion.

Most people don't want to be informed consumers or they don't even grasp the concept.

They played Dead Space. It was good therefore they will play anything with Dead Space in the title. It's that simple.

They don't care that new games are pursuing political agendas or not. They need to consume anything related to Dead Space. FOMO.

Pfoa, can't wait to blacklist my way through the levels, marking and executing fools, agents, commandos, guards, dogs, cops again while calling hellfire air strikes from predator drones all over the place exactly like Fisher would.
10/10, GOTY, would sneak again.
