I think the attraction of the movie-led IP (as opposed to the book) is the semi-grim dark setting where you face endless waves of space bugs, armed with a pea shooter* in a setting with portable nukes, power armor and orbital bombardment.

*I mean, the Morita's what, like a full-auto AR-10? So pretty cool, but also pretty useless against giant bugs.

The worldbuilding in the book is actually fairly sparse. We don’t know enough to say what the society is really like, and one interview suggests Heinlein didn’t get his points across clearly or was revising his work.

None of the Sony productions are accurate to the book, but the best was probably the 1999 CGI cartoon Roughnecks.

Aw man, really? I remember Squad being really promising when it first came out. (Or am I thinking of a different game? I remember it being a modern combat game with VR compatability.)

Hmm, so I needed a break from scripting anyways so I got it. Probably a waste of money, but whatever.

It's a bit of a mixed bag. Extermination is essentially the Starship Troopers game everybody wanted 10-20 years ago. It's a FPS, 16-man lobbies, massive swarms, base building fun. If you wanted to recreate that fort scene from the movie, this is probably the closest you'll get from an officially licensed product.

The problems are mostly technical and multiplayer-based.

Cons

  • Performance is not good. Lots of input lag, FPS drops, long loading time, etc. I'll chalk this up to the sheer amount of arachnids in the game.
  • Poor production value. The gun sounds are anemic, animations are an afterthought, graphics are a generation behind.
  • I've read on the steam forums that the devs are apparently not interested in community servers, no mod support, bots, etc. Can't see the lifespan of this game being too long if that's true.
  • There's a lot of icons on the screen at any one time. Very cluttered.
  • Maps all kind of look the same?
  • Aiming down iron sights on the morita is hilariously useless.
  • Progression seems lame.
  • More bugs than you were expecting.
  • The three classes are pretty basic and lacking a lot of their kit right now. Also most of their kit is basically interchangeable and the weapon sidegrades kind of... suck? Maybe that's just me.

Pros

  • Not too many enemy types (fast small bugs, standard warriors, big warriors, plasma bugs, etc) but they all work very well.
  • Can be challenging outside of easy (you can wade through bugs in easy, I actually don't know how people die).
  • Fastest ladder climbing I've ever seen. Faster than your running speed.
  • The bugs will overwhelm you, they will break your shit, and they will push you into a corner. Frantic and chaotic gameplay.


If this had like 30% more polish, better performance, better progression mechanics, and just more good shit, I would confidently point to Extermination as the holy grail of Starship Troopers games.

As it is though, I'm not sure it can retain the playerbase needed for 16-man lobbies.

I hope it's pretty early in its development cycle and the devs stick with it and improve it as early access is meant for. Not just drag it along for three years and then casually release it.

The problem with this IP is that stupid fake satire tone introduced by that braindead idiot Verhoven. You don’t satirize fascism by producing work indistinguishable from propaganda.
He doesn't even really succeed in that, since the Citizen Federation in MovieTroopers doesn't even seem all that fascist, as fascists tend to DISCOURAGE people from wanting to know more. They do seem very jingoistic and militarist, but the actual fascism seems to be a bit light.

Except they're following the movie imagery, which had a myriad of Bug castes, specified for various roles. It's the book that had like 3: brain bugs, breeders and workers/warriors, all of whom were TOOL USERS, like us.

As far as I can tell these are all the bug types in the game, from weakest to strongest. I don't actually know their canon names.

  • Smaller worker-looking bugs that are easy to kill.
  • Dwarf warriors that can hop around
  • Standard warriors
  • Gunner bugs that shoot you with air sac spines or something
  • Tiger arachnids that are massive and tanky
  • Plasma bugs that are tanky and shoot you with their butt

I am very disappointed by the lack of that large fire-breathing bug from the movies. Probably likely it will show up if the game does well.

Is it hype? I thought it was just differentiation from the standard 4-man horde survival games.

There's nothing really technically impressive about the game and I think the AA/indie pricepoint shows that.

It sounded like they are proud of it. Which, considering console parity these days, they probably are.

If you made a game like this for a team of 128 players instead of 16 and you run it your computer's going to end up resembling Buenos Aires.

The end-round swarms are large, but I have a feeling there aren't more than maybe 100-300 arachnids actually on map simultaneously, even on veteran. I would be pleasantly surprised if there were more, not surprised if there were less.

The hardest part of the game is definitely the teleporting bug traps they have during the extraction period. It's actually ridiculous, bugs just burrow underneath you as you move, are absolute HP tanks and even the weaker ones can 3-4 hit you and you're downed. As a mechanic it's probably to encourage the entire team to stick together as a giant tactical blob.

The "win condition" of the multiplayer is actually super wholesome: get every trooper back alive. That's the only "real" way to lose, is to lose a lot of your mates.

Judging by its population size, the game's probably big enough to work out a meta in a day or two, and veteran will be a cheesewalk just like the other difficulties.

These anti-fascists obviously don’t know what fascism is. Not hating the military doesn’t equate to fascism. Demanding ideological conformity and purity, which is exactly what anti-fascists do, is fascist.

I prefer “war is hell” type stories. The Roughnecks cartoon was closer to that (e.g. one episode is the team sending messages to their families in case they die), although being broadcast on tv meant its content was restricted.

Cool. The only problem it will become META, and if you deviate from it, people will get pissed off. This seems to happen to every FPS I have played that involves teamwork.

fascism actively fought illiteracy, built infrastructures and schools everywhere they could, they forcibly took kids from the countryside to put them in school, they promoted every kind of activity, from sports to arts, from literature to painting and funded new movements, when they opened the cinema studios "cinecittà" hollywood shat its pants in terror, the "venezia film festival" was created and promoted (and still exists) by fascists to encourage the art of movies shooting, the "istituto luce" was used only in minor part to produce propaganda, its main use was to film documentaries, of every kind, on every subject, so many and so well done they've been used in schools for decades after. in the '90s they were still being shown.

"but, but... they killed political adversaries...". fewer than clinton alone.
