Dear citizens of the Suzerainverse,

With the sun shining brightly and summer in full swing, we are delighted to greet each of you.

In this special June and July broadcast, we are eager to bring you the latest and most exciting updates that have taken place across our vibrant nation over the past month!

Rizia Updates

In June, we launched Rizia's largest update, version 3.0.9, which brought significant polish and new content thanks to our team's hard work and your invaluable feedback. We're committed to further enhancing Rizia with more content and improvements.

Our team focuses on update 3.1.0, which is set to introduce fresh dialogues, narrative expansions, and design improvements, including significant additions to the war feature with an aircraft expansion. We're also addressing existing issues and reported bugs - be sure to continue sending bug reports via Discord.
...
It's been too long since we've had a conversation with you, so we are thrilled to announce a Town Hall Q&A session focused on mobile development and answering any general questions on Wednesday 14th of August at 7 pm CET in our Discord server.
...
And before we wrap up, we’re excited to share the amazing caricature portraits of the characters from The Kingdom of Rizia, crafted by the talented Sieger Charlie. To see more of his work, be sure to visit his portfolio here.

Dear citizens of the Suzerainverse,

Welcome to the August edition of our monthly broadcast. We’re excited to share a fresh lineup of updates, insights, and stories that matter to you.

Buckle up and join us as we dive into the latest happenings and important announcements shaping our community this month!

Rizia Update

We have added the first few scene drafts to the build and begun identifying further storyline improvements. The storylines for Rusty Montoro and Adarfo Sotelato are expanded with cascading story impacts to different branches. We've also integrated new design systems to deepen the reformist dynamics and improve the existing content.

Our team has begun solidifying our new hero scene, which will be the most ambitious scene we have ever attempted in terms of scale and complexity in Suzerain. We are also excited to include some content specifically for absolutist and theocratic players here and beyond.

We've added many decisions and new royal decrees for the war tied to our new airforce content, with more royal decrees and decisions being designed to improve other aspects of Rizian politics, economy, welfare, and order, and to deepen systems. The team has also decided to make a more involved step-by-step war tutorial which is in design right now.

We are implementing our new character portraits, including one surprise portrait that we hope you will enjoy. Additionally, we've added some new codex entries and made dozens of bug fixes reported by the community about different parts of the story and design. We've also improved optimization for war initialization and added status updates on units, among other things.

We're excited about these updates and can't wait to share more in the next broadcast.

I am enjoying this. I like the narrative, especially some of the detailed policy discussions you can have. Right now I'm pushing for a free market capitalist state with strong borders and security, while pushing out immigrants to Make Sordland Great Again.

It's a little weird to play, because you're someone with a long political career, but obviously being a new player means you don't know the history or people. I can be talking to some woman and forget that she's my wife and not the minister for education or whatever, for instance. This must be what it's like to be Joe Biden.

I'm impressed by the Kingdom of Rizia expansion so far. It maintains the high quality writing of its predecessor and removes much of the frustration. In the base game there were so many inconveniently timed proposals that went straight into the dustbin if you didn't have the budget for them in that moment. Planning things out was next to impossible without foreknowledge from a prior playthrough or a walkthrough. Rizia's monarchy offers a more proactive approach with a huge list of decrees that can be enacted at any time. This enables better planning and consistency in building a specific style of kingdom from the get-go.

Transferring over the save file was also an unexpected perk. The expansion starts 4 years before the events in the base game, but at some point the timelines overlap and choices made in the base game affect the expansion in a unique attempt at parallel storytelling. It's also fun seeing familiar faces like Alphonso and Smolak from a different perspective.

Dear citizens of the Suzerainverse,

Welcome to our October Broadcast! We've spent a lot of time talking about the mobile update in the last broadcasts, so this month we wanted to give you a preview of an upcoming Rizia content update for mobile and PC that we'll be sharing more details in the following months. We’re also honored to be nominated for Best Story at the German Developer Awards, a recognition that highlights our team’s dedication! Nothing would have been possible without you so, thank you.

Alright…Let's dive in!

Here's a quick look into the Rizia content the Torpor team has been working on in the last month, that will make its way to PC and mobile soon.

The noble houses are taking center stage, bringing new story moments where you'll encounter noble characters who were previously in the background. These encounters will add depth to court politics and offer richer content with characters like Leona, Carlos, Hubertus, Daria, and Rusty, revealing layers of intrigue and alliances that shape the story. We're also deepening the reform movement to create more meaningful experiences whether you're pursuing an absolutist or reformist path, and we're expanding theocratic options for those looking to strengthen religious influence in their realm.

Our writers, Rachel and Adam, have been working hard to create new scenes and expand many existing ones to accommodate new content. The entire narrative and design team is collaborating closely on an exciting new mega scene for Rizia, the largest we have ever produced as a company.
...
Moreover, the design team has implemented a new set of royal decrees that expand our economic, religious, and civil order systems. These decrees dive deeper into industry management, and trade resources beyond energy, such as tourism or pharmaceuticals, giving you more tools to shape your nation's development. These new royal decrees will give you additional options to balance your resources and economy.

On the military front, Laurence, our game designer, has completed the implementation of aircraft-related construction and trade decrees, while further developing the design of war's impact on your nation. The team is working on additional effects and consequences for post-war Rizia that will better reflect both the literal and felt costs of armed conflict for the Kingdom and Pales.

We couldn’t be prouder of our team. We've been nominated for the Best Story at the German Developer Awards! To everyone who has supported us on this journey, our deepest thanks. This wouldn't have been possible without the incredible people beside us—those who stand with us through every challenge, finding solutions, and bringing our vision to life.

The stories we tell in this fictional world reflect pieces of ourselves. Rizia delves into monarchy, the complexities of geopolitical conflicts, resource-driven economies, and the power struggles within a royal family as factions vie for influence in a rapidly shifting world.

A resilient people live under the powerful King Romus Toras, with neighboring forces waiting to seize the advantage and a world that watches and sometimes intervenes. Rizia examines the nature of unchecked power and the dangers it brings.
To be recognized for Best Story is truly incredible. We strive to share something meaningful with the world, and we’re profoundly grateful to be able to do so, five years after founding the company.

Thank you to everyone who supported us, this is our moment of celebration!

Until the next update, take care!

Conquered Pales, executed its self-styled Duke, rigged the Zille referendum and reforged the golden kingdom, gained the favour of all three noble houses, secured the line of succession, and took full possession of the Aureus Offshore Gas Field to ensure Rizia's prosperity as a global energy provider for decades to come. Already looking forward to specializing the kingdom further in a replay. The expansion is well worth the modest price, and the continual updates (for both the base game and the expansion since the pair are inexorably linked) are great to see. I hope they consider making another one at some point.

If you're playing the base game as Anton Rayne of Sordland, then the war with Rumburg occurs late in every playthrough and can be avoided entirely. Suzerain: Rizia also has a fixed schedule for the beginning of its conflict, which can also be avoided, but it starts earlier and has an actual wargame attached.

i've been told that this is strictly a visual novel, that whatever you do the outcome of the story is always the same, war. is it true?
In neither the Sordland game nor the Rizia game is war unavoidable, and there are a number of other outcomes as well, such as deposition via coup, assassination, losing re-election, etc., while the extent of the player-character's success in running the country can vary greatly as can the direction in which the country is taken over the course of a playthrough. For example, in one Rizia game I took a peaceful diplomatic path that restored lost territories and formed a new alliance between neighboring countries, while in another Rizia game I prepared for war and conquered Pales while remaining in the good graces of the international monarchist organization.

Finished my first run. I tried to turn Sordland into a social democracy. I was partially successful, through at times I felt more like Biden than Benn.

ov06vw.jpg

I made a Rayne from a rich family, who studied History in Deyr and joined the Red Youth. His military career was cut short when he got kicked out for helping Blundish refugees. While rising through the USP he supported the neoliberal Alfonso, primarily for his political reforms. We came to power on a platform of democratizing the constitution, restoring the planned economy, improving healthcare, and aligning with the West. All but the last were realized.

ylt0zh.jpg

Most importantly, I stayed in office, won the war, and got a second term. I also reconciled with the Blunds, and unbanned the BFP. This split the Blundish vote and kept them out of politics, which I totally anticipated. I gave extra funding to healthcare, particularly improving rural health services. I passed other social reforms including worker’s protection, polio vaxx, and child benefits. I restricted or outlawed vices, including prostitution, alcohol, and tobacco. My constitutional reforms transferred power to the assembly and passed with wide margins.

Contrasting healthcare, my education reforms were a massive failure, as I cut funding and then tried to modernize the curriculum. I also ignored my wife and the women’s movement, though I was able to postpone divorce until after reelection. At one point I did support a women’s rights bill, but changed my mind again and vetoed it when it came to my desk.

Diplomatically I secured trade deals with Wahlen and Valgsland, and an alliance with the latter. My capitalist neighbors were less inviting, but I received a lot of assistance from the ATO, who only asked for an airbase. Eventually the Arcasian president visited to seduce my wife recruit us into the ATO, but he demanded a parallel command structure in my military due to my heterodox politics. I rejected his offer before he could pull a Suharto, and pivoted hard towards the communists. I had already sent them a gift, but instead of my wife, Malenyev got my son. I also supported the intervention in Heljiland and was sanctioned for the trouble. Despite these sacrifices, and subsequent UN shilling, I was never invited to join the CTO.

3fg611.jpg

Dweight should’ve been more lenient, as I modernized my airforce, and built a military industrial complex with his own aid. When Rumburg declared war, Colonel Soil returned to advise the military plan, a pincer attack which was completely successful. Meanwhile the Valgslanders marched on Dome, and due to our alliance, the defeated Rumburg became a CTO ally. Which could be concerning in the future if we are still nonaligned.

I trusted Lucian's judgement on the spy case. I'm not sure if he was still spying for someone else, but if he was they seem aligned with me. My biggest gamble was passing him over for VP, as I had no idea how he would take it. On one hand he could react badly and try to coup me, but if I do make him VP he would be next in line for president, so there's a target on me then too. I chose the Gloria over Albin for VP because I was more in danger of losing conservatives than reformists. In fact, my conservative interior minister resigned to run against me, which could have been disastrous. Fortunately Rumberg declared war, so the party congress was cancelled. The elections saw the nationalists overtake the PFJP as the second party, and the communists also made the threshold.

My main shortcoming was the economy. I blew through my budget immediately, and then let Gasom go bankrupt because I wanted to avoid deep debt. I also thought I could bail out or nationalize them once they collapsed, but it was not to be.

sp47su.PNG

The line is finally going up.

I eventually realized a planned economy requires heavy investment, so I embraced the Managed Decline, and funded most of my infrastructure and social reforms with debt, supplemented by heavy taxation and western investment. Shortly before he quit, my economy minister said we were approaching 50% inflation and in a debt crisis. The not-IMF offered a bailout, which I refused. Still, my projects were successful, and the net result was low growth/stagnation rather than depression.

Aside from Gasom, my business relations were productive. I made an alliance with Koronti, but then betrayed him and nationalized his company. I never touched Tusk’s company, and took his bribe for the rail contact, so he never caused trouble, even when I taxed him and passed anti-business reforms.

djxyd7.jpg
k5ozle.jpg

The USP remade itself for the democratic era.

I made several ethical compromises to stay in power: Our deal with Koronti meant HOS media was biased in our favor. We later turned HOS into biased state media, and then censored the other media. Another law resulted in unfair party financing, favoring the establishment. We also banned the nationalist youth movement, and later co-opted the red youth to terrorize voters in our favor. Such policies helped us to retain a majority even with low favorability. Finally, I never addressed corruption in the police or military, as Lancea was still mad about my military service and I didn’t want him to kill me. If I do this playthrough again, I will try harder to limit these abuses and respect the principles of democratic socialism.

Dear citizens of the Suzerainverse,

What a remarkable year it has been! We’re delighted to welcome you to our final broadcast of 2024; a moment to celebrate our milestones, reflect on what we’ve accomplished, and look forward to what lies ahead.
...
December has been especially triumphant for Torpor Games, which garnered two major distinctions. First, the studio was honored with a Berlin Tech Award, one of the city’s most prestigious ceremonies celebrating excellence in Germany’s tech and innovation sector, held in the historic Rotes Rathaus under the mayor’s patronage.
...
We were also recognized with the Creative & Cultural Pioneers 2024/2025 Award from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, celebrating the creativity behind Suzerain and The Conformist, both of which explore societal and political change.

At Torpor Games, we believe in the power of multiperspective storytelling to foster empathy, spark dialogue, and broaden our understanding of the world. By delving into nuanced scenarios and confronting assumptions, we strive to create games that inspire introspection and thoughtful conversation.

These recognitions reaffirm our mission to push the boundaries of political entertainment and ensure the stories we tell truly matter.
...
But that’s not all: we’re proud to share that we’ve been featured in several media outlets, including Forbes magazine and Pocketgamer. This recognition reflects the dedication we’ve poured into creating a smooth, intuitive experience and motivates us to keep pushing forward. Thank you for your continued support.
...
2024 was a transformative year for Torpor Games. Suzerain reached new heights, with over 300,000 people playing across all platforms and lifetime mobile installs surpassing 700,000. Our Kingdom of Rizia DLC added new depth to the Suzerain Universe, while the mobile relaunch brought 45,000+ active users on iOS and Android within a month. On Steam, we recorded 3.2 million visits for Suzerain and its DLCs, solidifying its place as one of the most impactful narrative RPGs of the year. Our websites collectively attracted 176,000 visitors and amassed 861,000 page views, with the Suzerain Universe Codex becoming a central hub for lore enthusiasts and players alike. Our community also flourished, with Discord growing from 5,300 to 8,300 engaged members and Reddit (r/Suzerain) surging to over 22,200 members, generating more than a million interactions.

The team has been working hard on stabilizing and polishing the mobile experience while preparing the 3.1 content update for PC and mobile, which represents a major overhaul for the Kingdom of Rizia. This update includes some of the most dramatic moments we’ve ever created, with gameplay striving to be more dynamic and emergent. We also have small surprises planned for the Sordland Story Pack, alongside further bug fixes and improvements to address common issues. For the rollout of patch 3.1, we intend on involving the community more closely in the final development stages before launch—details to come in the months ahead. As we look to the future, we're looking for more ways to highlight the Kingdom of Rizia as we prepare for the next step: our second DLC, which we’ll reveal more about later this year.

Beginning in Q1 2025, we will transition to full self-publishing across all platforms as our partnership with Fellow Traveller comes to an end. This is a significant step that will allow us to take greater control of our future and align our work more closely with our vision. We are deeply grateful for our time with Fellow Traveller, they have been a wonderful partner, and we appreciate all the support and opportunities they provided to help bring our work to life. None of this growth and progress would have been possible without you, our players, supporters, and friends. Your passion and belief in our dreams have been the driving force behind everything we do. Thank you for making this year remarkable. 2025 promises even more exciting content additions, launches, and announcements.
...
To wrap things up, what better way to celebrate than with some music? Our vinyl is still available for pre-order! This is an awesome way to support us and add a special edition to your collection!

Until the next update, take care!

Dear citizens of the Suzerainverse,

Welcome to the January 2025 Broadcast!

As we step into the new year, we want to thank you for being an essential part of our journey. Your support and passion make everything we do possible. 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year, with new stories, challenges, and ideas on the way. We’re committed to bringing you meaningful and memorable experiences in the Suzerain Universe.

Thank you for being here with us. Let’s make 2025 extraordinary, together!

With the upcoming 3.1 update, Rizia is evolving in exciting ways, including new content and deeper character arcs... But what does it take to refine a world as intricate as Rizia? We asked Rachel, one of our lead writers, to share a glimpse into the writing process behind this update.
...
The year is starting well! We won Best Adventure Game DLC at the AGP Adventure Games of the Year Awards 2024 for the Suzerain: Kingdom of Rizia!
...
This past month, our Co-founder and Creative Director, Ilke Karademir, had the honor of joining the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung—affiliated with Germany's Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD), to discuss an important topic close to our hearts: the intersection of games and politics.

At the event, Ilke shared insights into Torpor Games' mission and vision, exploring how interactive media can empower players with agency, spark meaningful dialogue, and inspire change. Through our work, we aim to show that games are more than entertainment; they’re a platform for critical thinking and engagement with real-world issues.

The conversation highlighted the unique power of storytelling in games to challenge perspectives, foster understanding, and drive discussions around democracy, policy, and societal impact.

At Torpor Games, we’re proud to contribute to this movement, and we thank the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung for providing a space to exchange ideas on how games can make a difference.

Until the next update, take care!

Wonder if theyll be adding the rpg. Is that why this game is in this forum? Because someone knows they will make it an rpg eventually?
