Underworld was a complete disaster.
...and that was ultimately a good thing. The parallels to the Zigong ransoming are there.
Can you imagine if Underworld was actually good? How many other games it would've ruined by comparison, how many of us would have their taste buds spoiled by such a divine fragrance?
Otherside truly are the messiahs, sacrificing themselves so as to bring us that trash heap and make even Numenera a better use of one's brief time on this planet.

I hope you enjoyed our little rebellion, irritant. But remember; what Xi gives, Xi is more than able to take away.

This is how you make System Shock 3 - hire a Tencent-Rex to write your code and fill him with access to western IPs and multiple sequel rights

On the internet, writing shit posts.
When I read System Shock 3 I got hyped but then I read Tencent, and now I just want to submit to the biomass so my suffering would end.
Seriously, this does not bode well.
Even if they don't fuck it up, they'll probably sneak some malware in it under orders from the commies, and too many people are cucks to call the Chinese government out on their bullshit because of "muh rascism" and "muh globalist economy"

People ITT: Bashing Tencent and then going back to play PoE.

I can't pinpoint Tencent's plans with this one - they didn't acquire an IP, a studio or even just some talented developers, just limited rights to develop a game or two. That's not their usual strategy. Will they give the rights to Funcom, Sharkmob?

Likely this is part of their expansion in US and Europe. They've been hiring people experienced in more traditional Western AAA games in recent years. SEGA Europe's VP to Tencent Europe's excecutive, Halo 4 Lead Designer to lead a new Western Coast studio, ex-Konami/KojiPro producer to do something in Europe. So it's probably not about System Shock, maybe it's more about founding a new US studio (likely based in Austin) led by Warren Spector.

Yes, but in this case they could have bought the studio? Right now, it looks like they have the right to develop a game or two without owning the IP (a deal even Embracer / THQ Nordic would refuse :D), but no developers / studio for it.

Didn’t Infini recently post about how they’re building out their own internal studio in the US for traditional game development? This seems like a good IP to have them work on, as it’s an established brand so there is some success baked in if they don’t Full Spector.

Well Otherside Austin already let go of (almost) entire dev team when the deal was struck (supposedly around March or April). They have to re-build a team from scratch anyway. Founding their own studio also will save them from other headaches (Paul and other investors' shares on Otherside, the tainted reputation of Otherside)?

That's certainly a reason. But Tencent wants to expand its IP portfolio as part of their strategy. So this move seems to be subpar or a very first and cheap step to enter that specific market. Buying Nightdive would make more sense, even though they are maybe too obscure / niche for Tencent. And even if they want to enter the traditional Western market, I have a hard time imagining a Tencent game without online / social features.
