Yes, nvidia gtx 8800 ultra.

I have patch 1.01, then unofficial patches 44,45,46. When I run the program a window opens and it hangs. Nothing happens, have to terminate the process.

Including the fan patch? It was a rather buggy game. I think there's also something about needing to have the game's resolution set the same as your desktop's.

I got this working with the latest drivers 195.xx to do this you need Nhancer

Set up a profile then find the quake2.exe then set driver extension limit to 11a8

apparently there's all sorts of trouble on 8+ nvidia cards due to opengl drivers with all q2 engine games, including anachronox.

edit: here's the thread, there are some more recent tips too, like replacing the ref_gl.dll.

As far as I remember, if you apply the unofficial patches, you definitely should not apply the official patch.

I was planning to play Anachronox this week based on reccomendations by Skyway of all people (seriously, if he approves I have to see wtf its about) and also for lack of anything else to play.

What is the reccomended course of patching in both official/unofficial capacities? Is this a game I can just toss on and play with minor bugs or is this a ToEE/Arcanum like glitchfest?

One of the unofficial patches already includes all the official fixes. I don't remember the exact install sequence now but I think you only need the 3 unofficial patches, in order.

Same here, except for a lot of glitching with the Autosave. DO NOT USE AUTOSAVE. I mean let it save as much as you want, but never reload one. You lose all the pictures you had taken with the camera, as well one other minor glitch with one-time fixed-location fights (the actors will respawn but the fight doesn't initiate again, so they'll just stand there looking dumb).

OMG, this article is great! If you weren't so insistent about Arcanum I never would have bothered checking it out. I've been playing it for a few days and it's an amazing game. I love everything about it and the combat is not even half as bad as I expected. I just love the huge open world, big cities, lots of people, awesome dialogue. This is really a game that is very advanced content-wise. All you get today are crap games that have shiny graphics and not much else. Take Mass Effect 2 for example... it doesn't even deserve to be called a RPG. You basically take cover, shoot, repeat, and occasionally talk to people where you find out that it doesn't even matter what you say.

Arcanum rocks :salute:

P.S. I'm playing as a half-orc with "ran away with the circus" background (started with 20 strenght - when I saw the double dmg bonus I had to have it). When I got my first 'powerful' weapon at the start I found it hilarious that failing critically meant instant death for me due to high dmg and low health  Try that with the crowd that plays today's games, with all the health regeneration and hold-your-hand crap, and they'll all run away in tears.

next time play as charismatic and intelligent diplomat. It's better that way

Thanks for the suggestion, I will definitely try that, if only to unlock all the higher-intelligence dialogue. I'll complete it with the half-orc heavy hitter first, so far it's hella fun :salute:

Oddly enough, I actually didn't encounter any bugs on my first, unpatched - and admittedly, unfinished - playthrough, aside from one area on Anachronox where items kept respawning. But when I played the second time with the patch(es?) applied, I couldn't get one of the TACOs because the game wouldn't acknowledge the existence of the El Puño doll next to the MugMugs in the Lower Routubes. Do any of the unofficial patches fix this? I've been thinking about doing an LP at some point.

(Yes, I realize that I'm responding to a post from 4 months ago, but everyone's still around, so...)
