What's the best complete roguelike in your opinions? No longer getting updates, just a solid game that didn't need to improve further.

Aside from all the console and handheld fare, Frozen Depths exists pretty comfortably as a Capstone or Magnum Opus project. Mostly the same for Demon by ferretdev even if they later got sucked back in, albeit twisted, on interdict.

tales of maj'eyal for build diversity and combat and dungeon crawl stone soup for resource management, encounter design and adapting to whatever you find in the dungeon

Still getting updated, so it doesn't qualify.
my bad i thought he meant like in development or early access. idk if tales of maj'eyal counts either then since it still gets updated from time to time (including class reworks) and there's an expansion coming out soon. now that i think about it all the major (and best imo) roguelikes are constantly being updated just with some being updated more frequently than others.

I still think Nethack (Slash'EM variant in particular) is the best, most polished roguelike out there. ADOM would be a close second. ADOM has a superior world with lots of cool gimmicky dungeons, artifacts and quests and such, while Nethack has the superior game mechanics and balance that gives way to the best variety of gameplay as you desperately search through your inventory for some random junk that will save your life from the bizarre situation you're in at any given moment.

Ya, I was looking for finished games basically. Like the dev decided it didn't need anymore work, it's fine if the community is updating a fork or something. Just been on my mind since people talking about which version of a roguelike was the best since the dev was supposedly making it worse with updates has come up a few times in discussions. I admire devs working on these games for so long, but someone's gotta be satisfied with their work at some point right?

avoid dcss then since theyre notorious for that - removing playable races/classes instead of reworking them, changing core mechanics like attacks of opportunity, etc.

Ya, it was specifically that and cdda. iirc

The only ones mentioned I have yet to try so far are Frozen Depths, and Demon(though I have heard of this one before).

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
