Even when going solo, you've gotta assume that when shit hits the fan, it stands to do so spectacularly---online backups getting ruined alongside your own local phys copies is tremendously less likely to be the result of such a happening.

Still better than he was doing before, but yeah.

If you are working alone, I don't think there is much to be gained from a tool like git. External HDs, or even diskettes are an as good solution for that as any.
Here's hoping he loses 6 years of work next time, to something like a house fire. :troll:

Last night my draconian warper got lethally poisoned in Crawl by an invisible orc mage with a dagger of venom; I managed to randomly polymorph myself into a tree with rPois with a wand. Sat there watching my hitpoints bounce between 1 and 2. I think it's an omen! This might be the one!

Sure, but if you use an online solution, you have to allow other people to have access to your code, even if the said people are only the admnistrators of the service. It may sound silly, but some people can be protective of their own work.

I'm going to be that guy and say that if you're developing any kind of software project, you owe it to yourself to learn the basics of source control and working with a remote repository. It's really easy to think, "Eh, sounds complicated, I don't see myself needing it."

Nobody sees themselves having catastrophic multiple disk failures, or screwing up their code so badly that they have no clue how to get it back to a previously good state. Source control exists because we are imperfect beings living in a world that kinda hates us.

I hear about these mega-file roguelike projects far more than I feel I should. E.g., Ultima Ratio Regum is one giant file! I just don't understand.
Many (most) roguelikes are first time coder fiddlings started in first year University or even highschool.

This version focuses on interface polish, flavor, and on small changes that have big impacts on gameplay.

Here's a quick summary of the big changes:
* Health and status bars! You can now see health & status effect durations for both you and enemies.
* Dungeon descriptions! Flavor text for your surroundings now appears at the bottom of the screen.
* Shrines can now appear at any depth, not just odd-numbered depths. A full set of 5 will still exist on each pair of depths. (1 and 2, 3 and 4, etc.)
* Monsters now tend to have slightly less health, but slightly more of them will appear.
* Added 2 new level types, and changed level type rarities - some are now more common than others.
* More font sizes, to better fit common screen resolutions while fullscreened.

Playing insane roguelike. Got to lvl 45 and Far East for the very first time. Cleared spider lair and underwater cave, no biggie. But those fucking ass shit orc patrols outrun my stubby little dorf on world map and I'm constantly forced to fight half dozen of pinks and uniques double my level in ambush areas too obscenely small to bail from successfully. The most retarded part is that I still had plenty of tools to avoid death available to me- most notably- mothefrucking Unstoppable (can't go below 1hp for 7 turns). But I'm like "I have 3 turns to activation of recall and about 3,5k hp. What can these 15 summoned skeleton mages really do?"

Absolute rape is what they did. The goddamn unique butchered my global speed, defense, saves, resistances and put Curse Of Death (no healing/regen possible) on top of it all. I just sat there watching getting pummeled in the ass for two turns without a chance to act.

The good news is that I think I've finally found the perfect build. Getting up to that point was a cakewalk. Just gotta be smarter next time and sport some movement speed gear/infusion. I also hear there's a quest that reduces amount of patrols, so there's that.

Who knows, maybe I'll finish the game before 500th played hour. :roll:

Yeah, this is exactly what TOME4 does, it lets you think everything is going smoothly then a unique/rare monster appears from nowhere in the most trivial circumstances and rapes you... If it makes you feel better it took me many, many tries to finish this game on normal/roguelike difficulty and my last death before finishing it was on ~45-ish character level. You are getting really close :D.

The quest you are refering too was the one removed from the game at some poit because "genocide" herp derp... It can be restored via mod easily but its not necessesary, those patrols aren't THAT strong if you are strong enough yourself and are careful.

Not sure if this has been posted but I enjoyed playing Red Rogue http://www.redrogue.net/ great free indie side-scrolling rouge-like in which you play the wife of the original hero of Rogue. Hats/masks act as your armour that can give you abilities. Also has a turn based mode available. Available for Windows/OSX and Linux.

And it reminds me of that daily.

Hopes and dreams will be removed in 0.18. They have been deemed too spoilery and denied the player the feeling of crushing hopelessness.
To be honest, looking at the way they change things in recent versions, I would say they sooner will remove the RNG.

Play a Dwarven Demonologist. Use Forge Titans as they throw down flames AND boulders. Demonologists are a slow-starting class, yes, but once they get rolling there is no stopping them.

First 30 levels are probably the hardest ones due to lack of talents and good gear, slow starting classes are usually fucked, at least few demonologists I tried were. Either way, I don't find pre-defined classes interesting. Playing same build over and over again is tiresome. To me the most fun part of the game is playing an Adventurer and theorycrafting various builds on my own. This is what makes ToME so addictive- every time a character dies, there are dozen other build ideas in mind, ready to be tested.

Fenix jcd, you guys have played DCSS, right? In which order should I do the end game dungeons? I haven't tried hell, abyss, pandenmonium, ziggurat, zot or crypt yet, but I think I have done all the rest. Reading the wiki doesn't really help me decide what to do next. I'm playing XL25 draconian conjurer.

Has anybody got any hands-on with the new Steam release of Caves of Qud? I played it back in the free days and really enjoyed it. I feel like buying it based on that, but I was wondering how different it is in its current form to the older version, especially since they've become traitors to the ASCII race with this release.

You are a human who controls a relic and can bind demons to your will, the game is heavily inspired by SMT: Nocturne, but much more tactical. The developer is very active and responds to suggestions and critics very well.
