- You should invest to stealth. If you haven't you can get it to decent levels pretty quickly.
- Ditch the sword skill. In my playthroughs I found that axes are far superior to anything. With one attack you damage everything around you instead of just one target.
- Only use loud spells if you can score quick screen clear and can move on fast. Not using spells and stealth let's you roam pretty freely and mostly kill enemies you want. Abyss is pretty easy after that.
- Avoid those purple star, can't remember name for them. They cause corruptions for non undead chars and rotting I thing for undead.
- Dive into abyss lvl 3 as fast as you can. You can find the abyss rune only on lvl 3,4 and 5, but lvl 3 is safest bet. Once you have the rune you can escape abyss much more easily if you need. Grinding abyss without the rune can quickly turn bad as there are only few stairs to escape.
That tip about stealth on the abyss really paid off. Thanks.
Got my first mummy win (15 rune too). Hardest part was the hells, and the abyss before training stealth. Pan was actually kinda easy, even if I got a few close calls here and there.
Overall, this felt the win I played best. Not that many close calls, even in the early game. That might be because of that nifty torment immunity there. Lost count of how many Tormentors showed up and I just said, "haha" and sworded them to death.
I couldn't kill Asmodeus and Dispater when I did the hells (I do hells before pan/abyss). Never had mp to finish them off. When I finished pan, I had trained earth magic, had more MP due to training spellcasting, went there and finished them off, just for the sake of it.
Also, I couldn't kill Cerebov, so I just yoinked his rune and fled. In the next level, who do I see? CEREBOV!
The bastard now follows you on other pan levels until you kill him! (which I did, but it was one of the most difficult battles)
EDIT: Oh, I just remembered, fuck the devs with the -tele on the enchantress. Almost died there, closest call of them all. She's fast as all hell too, so it's hard to run away too. It's the only monster in the game that can do that (and shouldn't), so I didn't even remember that shit, except when I tried teleporting.

I'm still waiting for when it has a bigger discount. And possibly more patches/reviews about it.
EDIT: Yeah. Embers of Rage. I'm not in a hurry to play it.
Just picked up "Shadow of the Wyrm". I like atmosphere so far(Earthsea, LotR vibes), nicely written lore, difficulty(not cruel), original classes(rover, apothecary, oracle), open-world. http://www.shadowofthewyrm.org/downloads.html
It is a project gaining in quality at a good and steady pace, just recently(today) had a big update at that. Should it continue roughly apace, it should arrive at a very fine place in the none too distant future right up there comparable to ADOM and the other greats.
I spent some time playing SotW and crash bug happened to me, i asked Julian Day(creator) about it and got answer, so if anybody is interested in doing this game more stabile here is how:
Unfortunately, there's a crash bug that's been present since my first release that I haven't been able to figure out. Did you run your game with the batch file or the executable? What were you doing when the crash happened?
It would be super helpful if you could do the following. Download procdump from:
Then, you can run the game from the batch file contained at the top level folder.
What the batch file does is to run the game within procdump. If the game crashes, procdump will create a full dump that will allow me to pinpoint exactly where your crash occurred, inspect variables/the call stack, and hopefully figure out what caused it. If you could do that and then let me know when you have another crash (and send me a link to the dump file and tell me if you're using the Win7 or XP build), that would be amazing. Before I ever call the game a beta, I need to figure out what's causing this issue... jcd748@mail.usask.ca

Author here - the latest version (0.4.9) should automatically create a minidump on a crash that you can email to me. So, while the crash bug is still sadly present, I'm hopeful that it'll be fixed soon.

It is in the subdirectory "docs"Combat is easy: there are only few monsters which are dangerous, but i think in later versions author will tune things up. Main selling point of SotW is different classes/races, open world, NPC interaction, unique loot/mobs. With a dwarf(i think) i couldnt climb mountains without falling down and dying, with mountain elf(lol) i was able to reach highest peaks... or you could try taking rover which has mountaineering skill. If author will not ditch it - the game could became as good as other major roguelikes. So far i am having fun with it.

I definitely need to do something with saves. I was talking with a developer of another roguelike, and he suggested autosave/checkpointing. I might do that, or might just update the code so that saves aren't removed except on dying/quitting. At least with the latter, it's an easy, unobstrusive change to make, and lessens the sting of a sudden crash.
