The Codex vs. Baldur's Gate: The Black Pits

#0: Meet The Codex (this update)
    #1: The Warm-up
#2: A Bit More Serious This Time
    #3: Bugfest
    #4: Downs and Ups
    #5: Fire, Clay and Ice

    ----------

So, I've heard that Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition is overall a :decline: but it has a new adventure module available, called The Black Pits. I wonder how The Codex would fare against it?
    Why not check that out?

The Black Pits are available instantly trough a streamlined button on the main screen. Can't miss it.

I've wasted too much of my life on BG character generation screen. Good thing I won't have to do that ever again. EVER. Clicking Import.

Being a badass level 7 Fighter/Mage/Thief, The Codex won't have any problems with this module, I think.

This should be a cakewalk. Mr Trent Oster won't know what hit him, as we plow through his creation. There's really nothing he can do.

    Well, fuck.

Must be some save game format incompatibility.
No problem, though. I'll just import from a character file instead of a save.

Finding where I should put the file took some time, but no more of this shit. I really don't want to spend ANY MORE TIME in the BG character creation screen, so this better works.

    :rage:

NOTE: I tried to get it to work, but it was futile. Maybe now, after a fuckton of patches have been introduced, I could actually import The Codex and try a solo/insane adventure in The Black Pits, but back then (I played this soon after release) I hads to go with the alternative approach.

    Update #0: Meet The Codex

I underestimated your powers, Trent Oster, but don't think you can stop me with windows errors! The Codex will defeat your module!

NOTE: "dwelver" is a hybrid word of "dweller" and "delver". It was a completely intentional creation, not a typo.
    Yes.
    Definitely not a typo.

[IMG]Ok, where the fuck are we?
[IMG]I don't know, but it does not seem to be a vault.
[IMG]Again with the vaults. How about we do something else than pursue riches for once?
    [IMG]Why would we?
    [IMG]Spoken like a true thief.
    [IMG]A swashbuckler.
[IMG]We have yet to see any actual swashbuckling from you, girl.
[IMG]I'll show you swashbuckling when I...
    [IMG]SILENCE!

[IMG]It seems we are not alone.
    [IMG]Great observation, Mr. Perceptive.
[IMG]Tasloi don't really count as people, do they?
[IMG]Not after we finish with them.

    Meet The Codex:

Lord UnderDark the half-orc berserker is our leader. His vegetable intelligence of 1 does not stop him from being very effective in his job, as he simply kills all insubordinate underlings. Usually by staring at them intensely.

Dwelver of Vaults is an Elven Archer, a bit obsessed with vaults. He's the fastes and most accurate bowman this side of Mississippi, but has some problems operating melee weapons. He says he's going to learn that on Thursday.

Verbius Pro (aka The Saint) is a dwarven Priest of Talos, who does not take shit from anybody and usually bludgeons everybody who tries to give him shit with his mace. Also, check out his sweet Saving Throws.

Jae-Sun is a Korean Monk from hell. It is said, mostly by him, that he strangled thirty-four people to death with his bare hands in one combat.

Femme fatale Swashbuckler archer The Becrooked is our token female of the group. She has a knack for all things Asian (except maybe Jae-Sun), so fights with a Katana. Or rather, intends to, when she ever gets her hands on one.

Last but not least, Tain Un-Tal the Sorcerer is the groups arcane spellcaster and voice of reason. He does not like adventuring much and is really looking for a good place to settle. He has not found a suitable one yet.

    [IMG]Die, not-person!
[IMG]Anyone knows what happened to our gear?
[IMG]Do you need anything more than a stick to fight Tasloi?
[IMG]Well I AM an archer. That kind of defines me as needing a bow to be effective.
[IMG]My superior kung-fu training makes me unaffected by this situation and able to laugh at all of you.
    [IMG]Just try.

[IMG]Am I the only one here actually fighting?
[IMG]You seem to be doing fine.

    [IMG]Hey! What the fuck!?

    To be continued...

How long is this adventure? I just read that it costs 20$ and it seems a little hefty price just for a few new maps.

It's a long story. Let's just say this is not the first forums I get this question.

Not very long. We should be done in 5-6 updates. And it's not worth $20 IMO.

    Update #1: The warm-up

    Show Spoiler

[IMG]Wow, he sure likes to talk.
[IMG]We'll shut him up in a moment.
[IMG]It would be wiser to refrain from violence.
    [IMG]For now.

    [IMG]Free gold. Nice.

    [IMG]Geas. Just fucking great.
    [IMG]What's a geas?
    [IMG]You don't want to know.

[IMG]"Show some backbone, elf" does not sound right at all.
    [IMG]Hey! Fuck you.

[IMG]Oh-kay. As if one crazy bitch was not enough already.
[IMG]Who exactly are you referring to?
[IMG]I'll give you a vague hint: it's either you or our team elf.
    [IMG]I'm an elf too.
    [IMG]Case closed.

    [IMG]I sense some UST.

    [IMG]Bo-ring.

    [IMG]Well said, DU.
    [IMG]LU.
    [IMG]LUD, actually.
    [IMG]Isn't it just UD?
    [IMG]Not for you.
    [IMG]*sigh*

[IMG]This place has more crazy people per square foot than Spellhold.

    [IMG]Scrolls. Hmph.

[IMG]My name is Lord UnderDark. I do know what a fucking myconid is.

[IMG]Are we going to talk about mushrooms now?

[IMG]This Baeloth guy has a really keen eye for talent.
    [IMG]You are being sarcastic.
    [IMG]Am I?

[IMG]Mushroomy matters aside, we could use some potions. Just saying.

[IMG]He talks almost as much as you, Tain.
[IMG]That's because I don't like talking to stupid people.

    [IMG]Here, kitty, kitty.
[IMG]I wonder if he is named after Elim Garak.
    [IMG]Who?
    [IMG]You wouldn't understand.

[IMG]Because duergars are pathetic scum that are not worthy of air they breathe.

[IMG]I have a feeling that we may be quicker in punishing this Baeloth than your god.

[IMG]This is the guy that female duergar was shouting at a moment ago.
    [IMG]Yeah, I wonder what's that about.

[IMG]I feel much more confident ironclad and with a sword in hand.

[IMG]This is a composite longbow, the most powerful bow in the world. Do you feel lucky?

[IMG]Pray that this shield protects me well, as I am the only thing that stands between you and death.

    [IMG]Well, I've got nothing.

    [IMG]This is not a katana. I wanted a katana. I don't care they're expensive.

[IMG]This staff is enough for me. It would be best if I did not have to use it.

[IMG]Baeloth and Najim are quite high on my black list right now.

[IMG]So, now do we kill him?
    [IMG]Geas.
[IMG]We'll have to play along for now.
    [IMG]Patience brings the greatest rewards.

[IMG]I don't think I can endure this for long.
[IMG]You will endure as long as I tell you to.

[IMG]Gibberlings. Nothing more than target practice then.
[IMG]I bet I can kill more than you.
    [IMG]You're on.

    [IMG]We should not underestimate...

    [IMG]...never mind.
    [IMG]I won!
    [IMG]You wish.

[IMG]What? That was it? No second wave or anything? Disappointing.

[IMG]Well, this was easy, but strangely rewarding.
[IMG]This is just the hangover wearing off.
    [IMG]Probably true.

[IMG]It was a good warm-up. A few more of these and we will be back in shape.

[IMG]It is indeed easier to hit something when my hands are not shaking. So much.

[IMG]And easier to recall spells when your skull does not feel like split in half.

[IMG]It was a good party, though.

[IMG]For a certain, non-standard definition of 'good', it certainly was.

[IMG]I for once enjoy the change of pace in our lifestyle, maybe we can learn something new here.

    [IMG]We're ready, bring it on.
[IMG]He's bound to run out of teleport spells sooner or later.
    [IMG]I wouldn't be so sure.

    [IMG]More gibberlings. Really.

[IMG]They seem fierce... HAHA! HAhahaha... Meh, I almost managed to say it with a straight face.

[IMG]This should slow them down a little.

[IMG]Aww, why did you do that. Now it will be no fun at all.
    [IMG]But it will be faster.

    [IMG]HA!
    [IMG]Kill-stealer.

[IMG]We'll get back to you about that 'perish' part.

[IMG]Good thing these first opponents are so easy, so we can back into form without dying.

[IMG]The warm-up is working. This sword feels lighter already.

[IMG]I too feel like I could split an arrow in half by shooting another one into it. Well, almost.

[IMG]I will need some more time, and prayer, to regain the whole of my god's favour.

[IMG]I also don't yet feel like able to strangle thirty people with my bare hands again. Right now my limit would be around seven, maybe eight.

[IMG]I could polish my katana skills faster if I actually had a katana, you know.

[IMG]The road back up is always longer than the one downhill.

[IMG]I have a feeling that we will need a lot of damaging spells soon.

[IMG]Whatever you have, we can kill it.

    [IMG]These alliterations hurt my head.

[IMG]Now, this looks like a proper challenge.
[IMG]Maybe we could reason with them?
[IMG]No point. They are too weak to make valuable allies.

    [IMG]It's better to kill them.
    [IMG]What the smart guy said.

    [IMG]Watch and weep, thief-girl.
    [IMG]I'm a swashbuckler!

[IMG]Oh, yes. Who is the best? I ask you, who is the best? I am.
[IMG]I forgot how annoying you could be.

    [IMG]Catching up!

    [IMG]In your dreams, maybe.

    [IMG]Sweet Talos, that hurt.
[IMG]This is one of the moments I wish I was wearing armor.

[IMG]Seriously, what would you guys do without me?
    [IMG]Live happy lives?
    [IMG]But short ones, no doubt.
[IMG]Ah... the priest fainted. Do we care?
    [IMG]Nope.

[IMG]And that's five. Of six. I expect some gratitude tonight.
[IMG]You're not getting anything from me. If you're so keen, you can ask...
    [IMG]Don't.

[IMG]Good. We like to be rewarded.
[IMG]I should keep all of it, but ok, I will share with you. This time.

[IMG]It seems that some blows to the head were beneficial to our clergy.

[IMG]The situation from last fight must not repeat itself. I need to stay focused.

[IMG]Do not associate me with the priest. My monk-iness is a lifestyle choice and has nothing to do with any religion.

    To be continued.

[IMG]'Elves' Bane'. What is people's problem with elves?

[IMG]They act smug and superior all the time?

    [IMG]That's because we are.

[IMG]Becrooked, Delver, you know I trust you guys completely, but I'll keep this in case we meet some hostile archers.

[IMG]Are you guys ready for hobgoblins or has someone fallen asleep?

[IMG]Are you going to issue any orders, fearless leader, or should we just kill them?

[IMG]Tain Un-Tal will cast Sleep first.

    [IMG]Is that really necessary?

[IMG]No, but you got the belt, so put it to good use.

    [IMG]Fine.

[IMG]Ha! Still have some brawn left in these hands!

    [IMG]Hobgoblins...

[IMG]Oh, you are going to pay dearly for that.

    [IMG]Like this!

[IMG]And in case you had similar ideas.

[IMG]Becrooked is down! No worries, I'm on it!

[IMG]You know it won't help if she's already unconcious.

[IMG]Of course he knows, but any excuse to touch the lady is good.

[IMG]Especially if she's unconscious. Isn't that right, Verbius?

[IMG]Let me show you where you can shove this arrow of yours.

[IMG]I sometimes wander why do I even drag you guys around with me.

[IMG]It is because you would drown yourself in decadence if not for us.

[IMG]I would not believe this man exists if I did not see him with my own eyes.

[IMG]I will wear one of these belts too, at least until I recall how to deflect arrows with my palms...

    [IMG]Deep.

[IMG]Let's see how your arrows work against skeletons, Delver.

[IMG]Try to stay conscious this time, Becrooked.

    [IMG]So much for elven superiority.

    [IMG]Any orders, Underdark?

    [IMG]Just watch.

    [IMG]There, done.

[IMG]Why don't you take these rings back, and we'll show you how enthusiastic we can be.

[IMG]I believe the adrenaline is cleaning up our blood. If we keep this up, we should be in our prime soon enough.

[IMG]I do feel a bit more clear-headed after killing that necromancer.

[IMG]My current skill level is more than sufficient for every obstacle we encounter.

[IMG]Who is going to wear this Elves' Bane?

    [IMG]Very funny.

[IMG]You do know we really don't need this advice?

    [IMG]It is free.

    [IMG]Right, surprise us.

    [IMG]Oh crap.

    [IMG]Cast Sleep, Tain.

    [IMG]On it!

[IMG]Good. Do you have another one?

    [IMG]Of course.

    [IMG]Damn, that hurt!

[IMG]Someone kill that ogre mage before...

    [IMG]...Never mind.

    [IMG]This mage is mighty annoying.

    [IMG]Agreed.

[IMG]Jae-Sun, I'll draw his attention while you... Jae-Sun?

[IMG]Alright, I will deal with the mage. You guys take care of the rest.

    [IMG]Already on it.

    [IMG]Seriously.

    [IMG]We're lucky! He killed himself.

    [IMG]Who? Underdark?

    [IMG]The mage!

[IMG]Let's hope we are able to defeat these ogres before they wake up.

    [IMG]Alright!

    [IMG]Yes, you should.

    [IMG]Nobody say anything.

    [IMG]We weren't going too.

    [IMG]Totally.

    [IMG]Silence is enough.

[IMG]Getting electrified seems to have fixed some of my synapses.

[IMG]I remember I used to be able to cast a Horror spell.

[IMG]It sure would be great to have that katana right now.

    [IMG]You don't say.

[IMG]They would need skill as well as variety.

    [IMG]Or a large club.

[IMG]Try to stay conscious this time, Underdark.

[IMG]How about I try my freshly recalled spell?

    [IMG]What happened to my weapon?

    [IMG]Thanks, Talos.

    [IMG]Stop hitting me! Someone, help!

    [IMG]Women.

[IMG]Becrooked is down. Verbius, why don't you start doing your goddamn job?

    [IMG]Kind of busy here.

    [IMG]The dwarf bit the dirt.

[IMG]He's useless anyway. Watch how it's done!

    [IMG]Taste the exploding brofist!

    [IMG]I think we've struck a nerve.

    [IMG]Since when do we negotiate?

    [IMG]Good thinking, Underdark.

[IMG]I think we would have gotten the reward anyway.

[IMG]Do we even need the reward? They are out of Elves' Banes anyway.

[IMG]That last combat was a little bit exciting, to be honest.

    [IMG]Indeed.
