As microtransactions open new revenue streams for game developers and publishers, Denuvo by Irdeto brings DLC protection to fight piracy

AMSTERDAM, June 30, 2022

Denuvo by Irdeto, the global leader in providing security solutions for video games on desktop, console, and mobile platforms, is pleased to announce the launch of pioneering technology to protect downloadable content (DLCs) against piracy. Denuvo SecureDLC is the first of its kind in the gaming market and provides opportunities to extend the revenue tail for developers and publishers past the initial launch window.
In addition to the actual game purchase, gaming revenue also comes from selling additional content and microtransaction-based purchases, presenting significant revenue generation opportunities for game developers and publishers. While selling additional content is an important revenue stream, it has become easy to bypass the existing barriers that try to secure DLCs on popular gaming platforms like Steam and Epic. By using public and easily accessible tools, players can automatically generate and install programs that access downloadable content without paying for it.

While some DLCs are offered for free, players typically must pay additional fees to unlock new content or features. They are usually extensions for a base game and can be anything from cosmetic items, new characters, weapons, and power-ups to big content updates for a game that are only included in certain versions of the game (like a collectors’ edition) or must be purchased separately.

The industry’s first secure solution can be applied to games that are free to play and rely on revenue stream entirely from DLCs, and also on games that are currently protected by the existing Denuvo Anti-Tamper product.

The Denuvo SecureDLC requires a small and simple implementation based on the application program interface to the game code to address the problem. The platform API is revalidated by the SecureDLC API mechanism, preventing pirate attacks and blocking access when it shouldn’t be granted.
According to Reinhard Blaukovitsch, Managing Director at Denuvo by Irdeto, the new technology is already being successfully used with the current Denuvo Anti-Tamper clients: “Denuvo has become a one-stop shop for game developers to ensure the safety of their game against cheating, tampering, and piracy and to protect the gaming experience. Our current clients, big and small, are ecstatic with the results and we are happy to help them maximize revenue and also enable new business models for these games they spent so much effort building.”

Only reason I bought games these days is because of CreamAPI, not a chance I'm purchasing a dlc infest otherwise.

Codex and most cracking groups have been largely irrelevant in the last ~3 years though.

Denuvo games are either cracked by 2-3 groups that popped up recently or the publisher themselves remove the protection after a few months.

Most games don't even have additional DRM protection anymore.

You want to become the latest crackoooor in the scene? Download steamless and Goldberg GUI, click two buttons, upload it and call it a *release*.

There you're all in with the majority ofnew up-and coming Crack Group. Thank me later.

Denuvo by Irdeto launches the industry’s first Nintendo Switch Emulator Protection

The innovative solution solves a long-lasting issue of emulating pirate Nintendo Switch games on PC, addressing the widespread piracy on multiplatform releases

AMSTERDAM, August 24, 2022 – Denuvo by Irdeto, the global leader in providing security solutions for video games on desktop, console, and mobile platforms, is pleased to unveil a revolutionary technology to protect games launching on Nintendo Switch from piracy. The announcement comes as the video gaming industry is gathered for this year’s Gamescom, currently taking place in Cologne, Germany.
Nintendo consoles have long suffered from piracy issues and the Switch is no different. Even if a game is protected against piracy on its PC version, the released version on Switch can be emulated from day one and played on PC, therefore bypassing the strong protections offered on the PC version. This can happen with any of the numerous games available on Switch.
By preventing piracy on Switch while blocking unauthorized emulations on PC, studios are able to increase their revenue during the game launch window, which is the most important period in regard to monetization. The Nintendo Switch Emulator Protection will ensure that anyone wishing to play the game has to buy a legitimate copy.
As with all other Denuvo solutions, the technology integrates seamlessly into the build toolchain with no impact on the gaming experience. It then allows for the insertion of checks into the code, which blocks gameplay on emulators.
“We at Denuvo understand that piracy negatively affects the gaming industry and are working with the industry parties to ensure they have the latest protection technologies available for them. Our team is excited to provide a solution that helps the developers and publishers to help fight the issue of Nintendo Switch piracy,” said Reinhard Blaukovitsch, Managing Director at Denuvo by Irdeto.
Even though it is hard to pinpoint the exact number of players who emulate Switch games on PC, it is easy to find online forums dedicated to emulation and piracy. The most popular groups have more than one million followers each. Recent research conducted by Irdeto in collaboration with Omdia found that 84% of game developers are continuously concerned about tampering and piracy. The study also found that 93% of those using anti-cheat and anti-tamper solutions are satisfied with the protection and value brought by game protection technologies.
Denuvo is at the forefront of game security with over 2 billion unique game installs protected across all platforms, and over 1,000 games secured. For more information on Denuvo and video game protection offering, please visit https://irdeto.com/denuvo/.

Update, 8/25/22, 9:17 a.m. ET: A spokesperson for Denuvo confirmed in an email to Kotaku that Nintendo is not involved in the new Switch DRM initiative and that it was developed in response to demand from existing clients.

"Because of NDAs, we are not allowed to disclose company names, but we can say this solution comes from strong demand from publishing partners," the spokesperson wrote. They also claimed it would not hurt "in-game" performance. "Software publishers and Denuvo take great care to deliver the best gaming experience," the spokesperson wrote. "The protection is designed not to affect the gamer's experience, and it does not have any in-game performance impact. It is the same for this new solution when protection is only active in non-performance critical code parts."

Update, 8/25/22, 2:06 p.m. ET: In response to follow-up questions, Denuvo confirmed that the DRM won't rely on online checks. "We are aware that the Nintendo Switch is a mobile console and therefore has limited online capabilities, so we designed our solution to be fully offline, no online checks required," a spokesperson wrote back.

They also confirmed the DRM would restrict use of legally purchased games with Switch emulators on PC:
As you know, dumping your bought game for backup purposes is a long-standing argument from pirates that is simply used to justify piracy. The majority of players use emulators with ROMs from pirate sources and are not self-dumped. And if they dump it themselves, they will require a jailbroken console to do that.

Reminds me of Metafortress. The only game that it lasted more than a couple days on was a few Ubisoft titles like "Smurfs Dance Party" and "Tintin: The Movie: The Game" (which crashed a bunch on console because of the DRM) nobody wanted to touch. Those were fixed by total accident by an unrelated change.

The NFO is way more fun than the game. The bit about being able to strip Denuvo from the .exe is exciting. The Assassin's Creed Origins crack did the same thing on a much earlier version so hopefully these cracks will start rolling out more frequently than they have been.

Empress is really something else: Complains about women who are desparate for cheap attention while attention whoring herself.

I was actually thinking about writing """herself""" just because I have a very hard time believing that a real woman would spend her time cracking games, but I was feeling generous.
When you're reaching that degree of attenwhoring and self-contradiction, you're de facto given the dishonorary female pronoun (or fag title).
Exactly, at least that part of the transition is working very well.

This is no hacker ethos. It is the opposite.
If something does not change in the community, anti-piracy will win in the long run.

Read up on Pluton drm.Piracy will die by 2025.
Which will not be a big loss, considering there will be no games worth playing by 2025. It's not like there have been any in recent years as well.
Pluton will block older games/programs as well.
If it isn't any major digital store files you ain't running any older games/emu on anything that doesn't have a combination of not pluton cpu and not win 10/11 new thing.
Better hope your old cpu is kicking for quite a while.

Empress is back. Shame it's Monster Hunter though. Capcom has the tendency to remove Denuvo from all their games after a period of time. World no longer has it.

All the future games I'm interested in will be using this drm.
So unless I'm willing to spend at least 300 euros monthly for games I will have to wait for sales.
Well played denuvo, I can no longer fill my imaginary inventory so easily.
Good thing I have my blizzard games to accompany me.
