Of course, I didn't know then that he had been forced out (or whatever)

For the record, i have no idea whether he was kicked out or not, but i'm assuming that's what happened. Since he was already working on Morrowind it seems unlikely they he would have just left like that, unless he was pissed at the Todd or something.

I even guarantee you there will be no less than 20 threads about this "shitty dumbed down" Skyrim when it comes out.

And you will post in all of them. But that's different. Threads about it? Terrible. Skyway posts screaming about it/the threads about it? A-OK.

Volourn's already done the "HAHAHA YOU BUY THE GAMES YOU HATE WHAT A LOOSERS" shtick, it didn't catch on when he did it either. I'd imagine 90% of the people you're gibbering about pirate.

Just yesterday I was wondering why Oblivion was such garbage when Bethesda used to make games that I liked and now I know.... it's because Julian LeFay left. I never knew who he was but I knew that someone must have left the company to mark such a sharp transition in quality. Well, now I feel more confidant in my decision to simply dismiss Bethesda and all their future work.

I don't know how much rage there's going to be about this game. With Oblivion, we all at least had Morrowind to compare, a deeply flawed game which however still didn't have that level of retardation. After Oblivion, who gives a shit anymore?

Interesting, Todd Howard was the project leader for Redguard. I'm thinking that game provably sold more then something as ambitious as Daggerfall which is why Bethesda gave Todd the lead for Morrowind, instead then Lefay. Its a theory anyway.

So wait Todd was the lead on Morrowind? Well, that kind of blows my theory out of the water...

Anyway, I don't think there will be much rage. Oblivion sucked and Bethesda no longer makes good games so I'm expecting Skyrim to suck. Best case scenario, it turns out decent by some miracle and I play it. Worst case scenario, I don't even bother to play it. There really is no way to lose on this one. With Oblivion I jumped right in because of how much I loved Morrowind but that was then and this is now and now it's impossible for me to be excited about any game that's following in the footsteps of Oblivion.

He was project manager, not lead designer. Ken Rolston was the lead designer. But he also designed Oblivion so who knows. Either way, the fact the company started to suck the moment Lefay left in the middle of Morrowind's development is a big give away. There's probably a lot more then went behind the scenes that what the final credits suggest anyway.

As far as I and the person who diagnosed me know.

@Twinkle:
Arena was essentially a half-assed D&D ripoff lore-wise, possibly even below oblivious level in terms of lore development.

Most of the stuff from Arena has been directly invalidated by later games that started to develop their own lore and distinct world.

Redguard is the game that almost bankrupted Bethesda, so no, it did not sell well. Not as badly as Battlespire, but badly. Both spinoffs were commercial flops, and IIRC they cancelled a bunch of projects after Redguard and concentrated everything they had on Morrowind as the game that would make or break them. While I'm quite happy with the way Morrowind turned out, it being Bethesda's last game would've been a pretty good thing for gaming.

Also, you can easily tell why Todd was leader on Redguard: it's an action-adventure game with exactly zero RPG elements. Not a bad action-adventure game (I happen to like it), but you can see what this kind of design mentality can lead to when applied to making an RPG.

Rolston also left after Oblivion because he wasn't satisfied with the way Oblivion was developed (too many other designers thinking of stuff that really didn't fit into his vision).

I really don't know what exactly caused the incredible decline of quality, especially lore-wise, but Todd's "add it if it's cool" design philosophy is one big reason. Another might be the fact that they recruited lots of modders and other non-professionals who made some cool thing or other in the past so they thought they would be useful. Oblivion was most probably a case of too many cooks ruining the soup. And when their boss thinks it's a good idea to add chocolate, pepper, chili, lemon, meat, fish and stawberry into one pot and mix it... eh.

Yeah, Todd being promoted as boss is probably the main reason why the company felt apart. Even a talented designer is going to goof up if he hates what he's doing. The only hope for a good Elder Scroll game now is an Obsidian spin off.

:smug:

Lawl man you played a 7 years old game from a studio that must mean you should love everything the studio releases 7 years later.

It disqualifies your rage dude. KOTOR isn't radically different from anything they've released since, yet you make your living as a 'hurr durr everything sucks from Bioware' guy when you've fucking played a fucking game of theirs more times than most rabid fanboys!

Don't you mean Oblivion without Guns?

This is actually true? You played KOTOR *7* times? What did you like so much about it? I liked it but I don't think I managed to play it more than about 1.5 times. KOTOR is basically the usual Biowarian stereotypical character archetypes and "twist" story in a Star Wars setting.

playing KOTOR 7 times still means more streetcred than playing AP twice

ps: also, it had lightsabers

pps: they really should add lightsabers to AP
