Ultima 8 is by far the best example I know of, where the manual and in-game lore try to cover up the fact that the game is not only inferior to its predecessor, but unfinished as well. They couldn't fit daylight cycles into the game, so they came up with Pagan being in a perpetual state of twlight, and added tons of mushrooms to the flora to add to the illusion.

That's a very good point - I even remember finding the eternal twilight thing pretty cool. :)

Dont know if it counts for the thread premise, but the STALKER series has the most disapponting background history/secret plot ever.

I say this because the first contact I had with the series was CoP with Misery 1 mod and it was fantastic but it omited all the background history on the zone. All that awesomeness got me curious to play the original and see the background history and the truth about the zone origins and all that. Then I played the original SoC and had to automatically erase the part of my memory with that info because it was LAME as hell.

The background story is ok but it's presentation is terrible.
