What game do you need to do that? Either way, the problem is your resolution is too high. I got a screen with 2560x1080 specifically to let a 980 handle everything. It works!

Even at 1080p and medium settings the architecture changes and driver focus for newer games are going to leave something as old as the 980 pretty far behind during the next console generation. There are already newer games that run ten times better on nVidia's turing cards and Ryzen's many threaded processors, like Shadow of the Tomb Raider, because architecture matters along with power. I agree in general that with consoles focused on 4k 30fps most likely you'll be able to get away with a lower spec for 1080p (or even 1440p), but a 980? Seems far fetched to me. Unless you're happy with low settings and sub-60fps, anyway, which hey... good for you I guess. I wouldn't be.

I hope that is true because I'm tired of graphics barely progressing. But I doubt it leaps that far ahead. My 980 GTX is only OC'd a bit but runs current stuff fast, GTA5, Witcher 3, etc all maxed out. For next gen it will lack Ray Tracing but I doubt the speed will be too bad.

I think detail levels and geometry and shit like that will remain stalled, because it's already too expensive to build, there's an uncanny valley issue and it doesn't determine success. Stuff like particle effects, lighting, load distance, etc. will keep advancing though. If rumors are true and memory/speed are a big focus then the VRAM on the 980 alone will be a big limiting factor.

You could make a PC that is better for around that price. And it does 100 times more things.

Over the past 20 years - short of a semiconductor factory fire or shameless collusion- the best gaming pc hardware buying strategy where you get the most bang/quality gaming time for your buck has been to wait until a year after the new consoles release to see what kind of horsepower you're going to need to last that generation, allowing you to take advantage of any new architectures or node shrinks that come the year after consoles launch (and this time also keeping in mind the possibility of multiple "pro" refreshes that double and then triple the base gpu power).

Whatever prototype specs or hardware studios are working on now are what the platform company wants its competition to know about. They can always pull an "extra 4GB GDDR5" out of their hat at the E3 before launch.

What is a good Sony exclusive? (that isn't a jrpg)
Bloodborne is ok as far as souls games go.

Curious about the spiderman game/batman clone.

If you go AMD for example, isn't it the same tech as in consoles but considerably more powerful? You should be more than fine for next gen release.
It would be the equivalent of going into the ps4 gen with something like a radeon HD 7850 or worse.

Except play Sony Exclusives, which are typically, pretty good.

There's a handful I would be interested in playing, but A) not with a controller, at least not the shooting ones, and B) I have plenty to play on the PC I haven't even gotten around to yet, so there's not a lot of "oh man I HAVE to play that" kind of drive. Maybe if they had an exclusive "immersive sim" or genuinely great Western RPG, but they don't.

7970 could handle ps4 gen without issue and were released ~2 years before.
Or maybe you mean the R9's, which also did fine.

I assume PS5 will have option to play with 1080p, 2K, 4K and accommodate performance.

I assume developers will mostly target 4k30 because because of the same priorities they've always had on consoles. They might also offer lower resolution 60fps performance type modes, if they feel like it and have time. It's pretty much what they already do with Xbox One X and whatnot, from what I've seen on Digital Foundry and such.

One change I'm expecting is that we're going to see cross-gen releases on the same disc. Keep your PS4 games, and play them on PS5 with better graphics.

(I don't care much : my experience of current console gaming is limited to PS:NOW , it's great, streaming is the future).

hell no, i'm never using streaming, there will always be latency and the servers will go offline, no way in hell i'm using this for a single player game.
