Cold War has split the world in two, both figuratively and literally. The Great Divide spans across the globe with an impenetrable mess of concrete and barbed wire sandwiched between the two blocs. You are Leonard Nimby; stone-faced former top agent of IM5, hot on the trail of a shrink gun stolen from you by a villanous mayoral candidate on the eve of a fateful election.

Splittown is a point-and-click adventure game inspired by 90s classics such as Day of the Tentacle and Sam & Max Hit The Road. You'll crack confounding puzzles, stuff improbable amounts of items in your pockets, and engage in humorous dialogue with a colorful cast of characters on an adventure that will push your wits to the limit.

Set in the depths of the North Sea in a techno-futuristic 1970s, professional diver Stan is struggling to overcome a life-changing loss and embrace a new future. The isolation of the deep sea is a fitting manifestation of his state of mind, and as Stan retreads further into his self-imposed solitude, he starts to experience strange events far beneath the waves. Brok: The InvestiGator is out now. The Adventure/Beat-Em-Up/RPG combination sounds like it shouldn't work, but it absolutely does. The demo from a few years ago was very impressive - decent puzzles, alternative solutions (basically, evey fight could be circumvented by solving a puzzle), C&Cs (many of which are tied to gameplay rather than simple dialog choices).

Dev describes this as "Myst-esque". The demo seems to have more interactivity and puzzles compared to hipster Norco and other similar shit.

Seems more like the kind of game that came out just before Myst, not saying that's a bad thing, just that's what it reminds me of. Adventure games were forming the roots of that style before Myst changed everything.

Ex-Telltale writer Mark Darin is at it again with another Kickstarter:

This is a full visual remaster of a Flash game he made in 2005, using all the original voice and music files but rebuilding the whole thing in 3D with true point and click gameplay, in the vein of The Dame with the Blue Chewed Shoe, an adventure game I liked a lot, and I generally hate adventure games.

I expect it to be worthwhile to play. I was also glad to be a backer because the guy had a heart attack and is on permanent disability; so part of the reason he's doing this is to stay active and fight depression. Showing interest in the project by backing $1 would be a nice gesture for a sharp, funny game writer. Two days left in the Kickstarter.

John Durick writes his thriller Minsky with Marcel in mind. Set in New York City, the movie concerns the death of a famous artist and Marissa stars as the muse suspected of murdering him.

For his swansong, Durick teams up with Marcel again as she returns from a lengthy hiatus. The movie Two of Everything is a subversive thriller which explores the duality between a successful pop star and her body double.

None of these movies was ever released. They were thought to be lost or destroyed. Until now.

About This Game

lightdust_620x200.png

The powerful and prosperous Velayan Empire has reigned peacefully for over three centuries, even as distant galaxies – connected to the empire by a string of star channels – have been wracked by war.
Now the empress is abdicating the throne. Her eldest daughter, Princess Love, must take her place. But when Love becomes the target of conspirators seeking to thwart her ascension, she becomes trapped aboard an interstellar lighthouse, with only her best friend and protector, Kel Yakkavan, by her side.

Arboretun_620x200.png

Love and Kel must expose the threat and save the empire before time runs out.
Blood Nova is a modern point and click adventure game set in a unique and original science fantasy universe. It tells a story of adventure and conspiracy, depicted in classical pixel art.

doctors_office_620x200_v2.png

As Love you will explore an interstellar lighthouse called The Looping Vale, solving creative puzzles and meeting a cast of eccentric characters, each with their own hidden motivations and desires.
The game is brought to you by Cosmic Void (The Corruption Within, Void Breach), Ross Joseph Gardner (Half-Life: A Place in the West), and Donovan Jonk (Megahammer Studios).

The university student hoping to make a life for himself.
The journalist determined to make a difference.
The heiress to a ruthless empire and her rise to infamy.
The scientists unearthing what should have remained buried.

Four different people for whom the world will never be the same.
These are their stories.

ABOUT TAILS: THE BACKBONE PRELUDES

Tails: The Backbone Preludes is a post-noir narrative adventure with branching choices. It is an intertwined series of vignettes about change, circumstance, and consequence. Guide four different characters through formative moments in their lives, all set to the backdrop of a gorgeously pixelized dystopian vision of Vancouver inhabited by anthropomorphic animals.

As a narrative and thematic prequel to Backbone, Tails: The Backbone Preludes introduces a plethora of new gameplay elements, interactions, and puzzles, as well as choices that affect each story from start to finish.

Play as Howard, Renee, Clarissa, and newcomer Eli, as you uncover the events leading up to the original game in this short-form and highly replayable anthology. Return to the world of dystopian Vancouver to learn more about your favourite characters, or start at the beginning - you can play Backbone and Tails in any order.

GAMEPLAY

Following the paths of four unique protagonists, the narrative-driven world of Tails: The Backbone Preludes has been designed from the ground up with replayability in mind, rewarding players for their choices through a heavily branching style of storytelling.

Deep branching dialogue - player expression is placed at the forefront with tons of variations and unlockable dialogue depending on choices that you make, traits you choose, as well as randomised events.

Tracking choice - between each vignette, the player is not only presented with a summary of their key decisions in both their current and previous playthroughs, but also catch a glimpse of other potential outcomes to hunt for in subsequent runs.
Unlockable photo mode - take pictures as young photography major Howard Lotor and share your own captures of the game’s beautifully crafted pixel art world.

Interactive everything - from mundane tasks like cleaning up and feeding your pet lizard, to repairing or vandalising a City landmark, Tails: The Backbone Preludes offers a wide range of interaction to immerse you in its world.

FEATURES

Changing lives in a changing world
What makes us who we are? How does our past dictate our future? In these stories leading up to the events of the original Backbone, players will experience key moments in the lives of the main cast, set them on the path of self-realisation or even destruction, and experience the growing pains of a world on the cusp of irreversible change, first-hand.

Four stories, united by a common future
Tails: The Backbone Preludes tells the stories of four protagonists, each thrust into circumstances beyond their control. Howard and Larry are two college friends. Clarissa is the heir to a crime family characterised by ruthlessness. Renee is a part time journalist and housewife struggling to regain her sense of personal agency. Eli is a scientist who makes a discovery that could change the world. The choices you make for them will alter their destinies forever.

Built to be replayable
A brand new branching tree interface allows you to track your choices, not only as you play each story, but every time you return for another run. Character traits, branching dialogues and randomised events allow for new paths to open up on every subsequent playthrough, with a wide variety of variations and endings for each scene.

Gorgeous visuals
Tails: The Backbone Preludes features breathtaking high-resolution pixel art environments mixed with 3D effects. From snow-covered streets to dunes of volumetric pixel art sand, these innovative visuals represent a world with rich history, inspired by Vancouver, art deco and post-soviet architecture. Inhabit a wide variety of environments, ranging from college dorm rooms to the seedy underbelly of The City, and revisit iconic Backbone locations such as Gastown.

Another banger of a soundtrack
Doom jazz makes a triumphant return in a brand new original soundtrack by Danshin, perfectly accompanying the themes and characters of each story under a single melodic umbrella. The soundtrack of melancholic and trippy noir tunes will keep you sorted for a rainy day long after you finish the game.
First Backbone was not well received but it seems the devs aren't giving up on the series. The first one promised a bunch of detective mechanics and puzzles that never materialized, not expecting much from this but hopefully they learn from the first game and improve.
