The Steam Greenlight Thread - SHUT DOWN

So it's safe to assume this got on Steam because of Bioware fans, then.

Looking forward to buying it during a sale. :bounce:

The latest software titles:
  • Faceless - This cooperative and non-violent free-to-play survival horror mod for Half-Life 2 received overwhelming support from the community.

Too bad the developers suspended development cause of real life schedules ( :troll: ). I was excited to try it out.

When we decided to port our critically-acclaimed and award-winning title, Mutant Mudds, over to the PC I looked at the library of games available on Steam to get an idea of pricing and genres available. Based on the games that are available on Steam I expected that Mutant Mudds would not have a problem getting on Steam. Not because I think Mutant Mudds is oh-so deservedly so, but because the library of games available on Steam ranges greatly in genre and quality. It does not give the impression of any strict guidelines.

I filled out the form and uploaded a playable PC build of Mutant Mudds with the hope of opening up a dialog about the game to see what features they would like to see supported on Steam, such as achievements, etc. I received an email from Steam about 10 days after submitting:

Thank you for submitting "Mutant Mudds" for potential Steam distribution. We have taken a look at the information provided and determined that Steam is not a good fit for distribution. It is our company policy not to provide specific feedback on a submission but we would like you to consider Steam distribution for your future products.

I was shocked. Like most developers, I never truly know whether one of my games is good or not, but due to the high review scores and fan reaction we received for Mutant Mudds on the 3DS I assumed the game was at least above average and at least on-par with the quality and genre of games currently found on Steam. Steam’s rejection of Mutant Mudds made no sense to me. And, to boot, their policy is not to provide feedback. That’s helpful.

Soon after this, news of Steam Greenlight was heating up and offered potential for Mutant Mudds on Steam – and possibly offered an explanation for Mutant Mudds’ rejection. Did the Steam team want to include it as a relatively ‘well-known’ title in their new Greenlight system? Maybe. Many folks tweeted me saying as much, and I wanted to believe them. I felt fortunate that the Steam team wanted to include Mutant Mudds with the launch of Steam Greenlight. That was awesome.

Four more titles have been Greenlit on Steam.

We have decided to Greenlight a smaller batch this time, so we can move more quickly. There are lots of titles getting attention, so we are likely to continue Greenlighting titles in this quicker, but smaller batch fashion.

These titles were selected on the same criteria we have been using in the past: Votes in Greenlight give us a hugely valuable point of data in gauging community interest along with external factors such as press reviews, crowd-funding successes, performance on other platforms, and awards and contests to help form a more complete picture of community interest in each title.

Vault Dweller Aterdux Entertainment Avonaeon This is relevant to your interests.

Papers, Please being greenlit does not surprise me.

Another title that I voted for on Greenlight is Broforce. That thing is just too much mindless fun.

FYI, the titles I've voted for on Greenlight are:

Papers, Please
Broforce
Evoland
Starship Corporation
Black Mesa
The Age of Decadence
Bean's Quest
Postal 2 Complete
Inquisitor
Underrail
Miner Wars 2081
Frayed Knights 1
Paranormal
Faceless
Sang-froid: Tales of Werewolves

(I don't even remember why I Greenlit some of these titles.)

Also, vote for Legends of Eisenwald.

Is the RPG Codex list still being maintained? Surely the answer is then just to vote for everything in there.

Unfortunately, this new development is working against us. With a list of 10 titles selected, being in top 10 we would have good chances to be greenlit (we are currently on place #7). But with just few selected, we are not a good fit for their criteria I am afraid and we have to do some PR to attract more votes to show them that our game is interesting for the community. Take papers - these guys have skyrocketed, at one day they seemed to have over 7k votes. So, I think all these titles deserve to be greenlit as we never even in our best days had this amount of votes or comments. Seems like Steam Greenlight players are more interested in "hype" kind of games. Ours might be too hardcore or niche for many. (I think there is a difference between Steam players and those who vote in Steam Greenlight - this second group is way smaller).

Eh, I still think you'll make it in soon. #7 is a high place - they can't ignore you forever.

It's baffling to me how Venetica got Greenlit so fast. A lot of these titles that get these surges are doing so from Reddit or TotalBiscuit or other social media outlets.

We were as high as #5 but and being on #7 is temporary. Since the pace now of getting new votes slowed down, I don't actually expect us to stay in top 10 unless we do some work. And yes, Papers got surges from all the press including TB, so while this is not the type of game I would play, but I think Papers were the fastest title on Greenlight to get to top 3 or even to #1 position. From the statistics section I see that some games are rising very fast (since we see #5, #10, #15, #20 and #100) item, and Papers was briefly seen at 10, 15 and 20 :) Briefly because when you get over 5k votes a day, it's a very fast climb.

Metro, as for Venetica - they were on Greenlight since pretty much the beginning (Sep 7). This was definitely not fast for them :)

Age of Decadence was in the same situation, climbing but always slipping back. Unless something major has changed, you'll make it in soon.

We will not be sitting and doing nothing anyway. So, yes, I also hope that we will get greenlit soon. It's just if I were in a position to decide what game to include, I would definitely wait for some signs of renewed interest in our game before making a decision...

Maybe do one of those Reddit Q&A's (they're called something else... AMA for Ask Me Anything? something like that) if you haven't already. Unfortunately I can't offer many tips as I avoid social media like the plague.

Aterdux Entertainment The best thing you can do is release some kind of new beta/demo. If the news of that shows up on RPS, you'll be Greenlighted within two weeks, guaranteed.

We sent beta to RPS and others quite a few times already, so far no results. So for now I am waiting for our game to get more fun stuff before we attempt it again. Demo version is questionable, there are many things to consider including promised early access to backers...

Metro, Reddit Q&A works when it attracts a lot of attention. We did it during Kickstarter and without doing some extra publicity, those Q&A don't do much. But thank you for thinking about us and for this suggestion! I think once we do something bigger like releasing a new video or something else, I will include reddit into our activity list...

I too am skeptical about the new greenlighting method. I have a feeling it will favor the viral, mainstreamly-cute and kickstarted games even more than the old one. We'll see.

Also Underrail just went down 10 ranks instantly. What the hell, Steam?

This is a bug, with ranks. Somehow greenlit games are back in ranking. This will be fixed shortly according to them - that's what they wrote in the Greenlight Dev group.
