There's Starsector. You start off as a random guy with a space ship who's not on any side, and after selling drugs to the luddite black market for a few years, you get enough money to build your own army and potentially start your own state through conquest.
That or you can continue robbing people, peddling shit, and running from the space cops.
Space Rangers is very much similar. More people swear by it than Starsector, though that might just be Slavic bias. I've never seen anyone call it slavjank though, which probably means both games are solid technically.

I remember enjoying Rebel Galaxy. It's basically Black Flag's ship combat in space. Fun game to zone out to. (The sequel's meant to be shite)
