Just started Ultima 7. The manual is pretty well written, with the author not-so-subtly making digs at the Avatar's reputation while still attempting to remain uncontroversial. And the setup with the murder scene is fantastic. But the mouse controls are giving me cancer so far.

Are you using Exult? I can't remember, but it may have some configuration options for this.

I'm compiling it right now, actually. I started out on DOSBox, but afterwards I figured I didn't want to make the same mistake I did for U6. I would've enjoyed that game a lot more if I had just used Nuvie instead of being stubborn about it.

Wow, U7 actually lets you take in-game notes? That's already a big plus. If I were to remake U4-6, that'd be the number one feature I'd add.

Actually, playing it further, taking in-game notes is unfortunately still inferior to using an external text editor because you can't take notes while talking to someone (the number one time you'd want to take notes).

Damn, the movement in U7 is janky as hell. If you try and move with the numpad like in U6 then there's a weird delay when turning sometimes. And getting on and off this fucking horse carriage is retarded. How come they didn't just make it like U6? Why try and fix what isn't broken?

That's LB for you; thinking every game needs a new engine and innovation. I thought of mapping keys to a gamepad. I have yet to find the ultimate gamepad with oh at least 15 buttons, d-pad, 2 analog sticks. 4 shoulder pads.

I voted Ultima 6 because its built on the same engine, but my actual favourite is Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire.

What's wrong with using the mouse?
It would be fine, but you need to bring the mouse all the way to the edge of the screen to move at the fastest walking speed, otherwise it's an excruciatingly sluggish crawl. And that's annoying because it means I need to stop moving in order to examine people and objects. It's as if my head and my legs moved at the same time and I had no way of moving them independently.

It's a testament to how great I think the writing in U7 is so far that I'm continuing to play despite the massive problems I already have with the gameplay.

I've been playing U7 for less than two days and I've already got 1005 words in my notes. For comparison, my final U4, U5 and U6 notes had 1791, 1448 and 1615 words respectively. Obviously I won't be able to rush through this one like I did for U6.

Does the magic carpet feel like a cheat code to anyone else? I found it pretty easily based on Rudyom's directions and my prior knowledge of the dungeon there. The very first thing I did after getting the carpet was accidentally sequence break a side quest. I'm gonna fly over to Jhelom to recruit Dupre. After I pass Trinsic, the Guardian literally tells me "you're going the wrong way, my friend!" I ignored that red faggot but, as I'd find out later, clearly he only had my best intentions in mind. I find a baby on the Shrine of Honor, and Spark says something like "thank goodness, the baby is still alive! We must return him to Lady Tory!". So now I realize that something's obviously fucked up with the game, but I didn't feel like having a baby stuffed in my bag for who knows how long, so I just looked up where she was, flew to Serpent's Hold, and then went to fly back to pretend like nothing happened. But then I notice that the lord of Serpent's Hold decided to ride along with us on the fucking carpet. So I reload a save because I'm not risking a softlock by accidentally dumping that retard in the sea. I had to wait like 30 seconds for him to walk off of the carpet.

So then I start flying to Minoc to try and do what the game clearly wants me to do at this point. I meet some gypsies and their music starts playing, so I get off the carpet to talk to them and shit, and the music stops playing because the music apparently resets every single time you get on and off of the carpet. So if I wanna hear the proper music that the developers intended for that scene, I have to get off the carpet, walk backwards, and then walk back into the camp again so the music would play.

At this point I'm scared of what else is gonna happen in the game while I'm using this anomalous fucking carpet.

Yeah, that carpet.....
Man.... that carpet is something else.... always has been and always will be.

Basically we see the continued breakdown of RC not hammering out bugs. I am damn surprised they didn't see this. Ever since U5 people want the carpet.

The carpet and horse carriage are really odd choices, anyway. All they do is highlight how small the world actually is. I figured that was the reason they were removed from U6. After all, the primary reason to use a horse in U4 was to avoid random encounters, and random encounters are unavoidable in the single-scale worlds of U6 and U7. Not that U6 didn't make a similar mistake - they gave you a free orb that let you teleport to basically any relevant location on the map, even to the underworld and back, removing the challenge of traversing around the world presented in U4 and U5.

How are you liking u7 combat?
It's :retarded: as everyone else says, and as I expected, but honestly I like it more than U6's combat. At least it's kinda satisfying to watch my party beat the shit out of an unconscious mook. Though I haven't gotten to any real dungeons yet (especially since my fucking save corrupted and I had to restart from the beginning) so my opinion may change.
