So, Metro, is this it? Will Linux finally conquer Windows with a massive marketing push from GabeN?

What's cool about it is that it can apparently stream games from a Windows/Mac machine running Steam. Of course, the devil here lies in the resultant image quality on your TV (latency shouldn't be a problem over a local network, and reportedly isn't at least for Sony's Gaikai), but I'd certainly welcome the option to play some games on a bigger screen when bros come over. Especially since it's Linux, so you can presumably do this on any old piece of shit hardware with a hdmi port.

One wonders if they'll port it to ARM eventually. :smug:

Boring as fuck but at least it's predictable. I'd assume the other 2 announcements are steambox and new shitty source engine/l4d3.

Since they're already printing money, and an adoption of this would be in their interest far more than immediate profit... imagine what would happen if they'd announce a Pack of games, something like Half Life 3, Portal 3, Left4Dead 3 and all of them free (and possibly Exclusive) using GabeBox or GabeOS...

GabeNet goes on-line August 4th, 2014. Microsoft's decisions are removed from strategic game development. GabeNet begins to discount games at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug. It launches its Summer Sales against targets in Japan, because GabeNet knows the Nintendo/Sony counter-attack will eliminate its enemies over here. Three billion popamole lives ended on August 29th. The survivors of the nuclear fire called it Inclinement Day.

Have they actually confirmed that it's going to be a GNU distro or is it just Linux fanboy's wishful thinking?

So, Gabe saw Microsoft inept attempt of pulling the rug beneath Steam feet with Windows 8 and decide to preemptively strike with Gabenet? That is why shit didn't worked in Terminator 2, instead of Arnold going after a nigga he should had got a overweight white with a crazy genious beard.

The only problem I have with the direction Valve is going is that they are always trying to enter your living room.
With Big Screen, Controllers, Family, and things like that.
These things define Console Gaming, not for PC Gaming Master Race imho.
More options are always OK, I just hope they won't sacrifice the trait of PC gaming for their Steam boxes.

But bro Steam on PC is already perfect, and the god-Gaben is improving perfection with Steam library sharing.

Can't wait to not buy this or care! Can't wait to laugh at the idea of console gamers abandoning their Xbox for Linux. Can't wait for Microsoft to go closed platform on Windows and lose half their business clients.

Such a fantasy world we live in!

Windows' business focus makes a closed system seem slightly far-fetched to me. I'm sure they want it, but I think that is why they have tried to separate Windows from the media center of the Xbox.
Windows RT is the merging of the two. The next step is laptops with Windows RT, then office computers with Windows RT.
Bullshit.

If Valve was serious about the OS space it would have gone with BSD. This is just politics.

Totally man, there's no way you can succeed with a Linux-based OS against a monopole.

Rather than look at Android, let us look at the desktop market with Ubuntu and OS X. That said OS X is closed source. Imagine what it would have been like open sourced.

Whether you use Linux or BSD only really influences whether you can easily control your product. Valve clearly doesn't care, while Apple obviously cares a lot. It's not even close to being a determining factor for SteamOS' success. Besides, the idea is clearly to use a model similar to Android, where any hardware manufacturer or OEM can use the system and modify it to their satisfaction, and only need Valve certification if they want to use the SteamOS brand.

I guess it depends on how you define "serious about the OS space". I certainly don't think this is supposed to be a direct competitor to Windows, like Ubuntu was meant to be.
