They're gonna release HL3 eventually, but I assume they'll have to make something a lot more ambitious than a mere linear, level-based shooter. Also, Source 2 is still in development. Don't expect HL3 to arrive any sooner than 2015. Then add ValveTime.

They don't even make their games PC exclusive right now, despite basically running PC gaming. I doubt they would risk a Linux exclusive under any circumstances.

Then what about releasing HL3 on SteamOS, PS4 and/or Xbone... with no Windows port?

It will never happen.
The last full Half-Life game they released was used to force Steam onto every gaming pc it could. I could see timed exclusivity to SteamOS.

I have an omen that whatever game they are going to release, it will be tailored to their patent controller.

Notice: Valve® Controller for SteamOS® is strongly recommended.

Or give the steamOS version away for free.

Free stuff is free for a reason.

Edit: I'm waiting for the the third announcement so that I can get the full picture of this entire fiasco ... err ... success.

Huh. Curious that they went with two touchpads, instead of a compromise of one touchpad and one analog stick. Means they're either really confident in the touchpads, or completely out of touch with how controllers are used.

That thing is fucking hideous.

Also completely useless for platformers and maybe a whole host of other shit.

Also also I fucking hate trackpads, using a laptop is like being violated by a large fat man with a taste for shit.

Impulse reaction: Valve's first complete boondoggle.

You can attach a regular controller for that. This is supposed to be a mouse and keyboard replacement.

Seems cumbersome, I don't want to swap contorllers depending on the game.

Yeah well, you already have to do that if you want to play these types of games optimally on a PC, so...

It's not a coincidence that they used an image of a distinctly PC-centric game (Civilization V) on that page.

I'm getting what you're saying, really I am. Maybe it's because I am disinterested in the living room aspect in general, but I just don't see sacrificing KBM for this and then having to use an Xbox pad for half my games anyway. Not a very elegant solution.

I'll try to keep an open mind, however.

The most intriguing of the 3 announcements, imo.

I expected a steam-branded 360 controller clone aimed solely at playing console parts, which would have been redundant since solutions exist for those kinds of games already. Instead I'm pleasantly surprised that they are attempting to provide a solution for mouse-focused games -- which was one of the questions hanging in the air about this whole steambox fuss.

The design is far too disruptive that I have no idea what it feels like to use the controller. It's interesting enough that I really want a hands-on -- even more for this kind of controller than those motion controllers all those years ago.

Community programmable profiles for the controller is a great idea though, as is mapping the quicksave and quickload functions to those buttons.

In before the usual suspects D1P that and arguing in defense of such "controller" and of the glorified console as a whole.

Wouldn't be surprised if they tried to copycat OnLive too.
