False again. Here is where you guys are fucking up. After you create your party, you will be prompted to level up FOUR MORE TIMES to get to level 5, selecting spells and skill increases and such at each level-up.

that´s what happens when you start with an imported party, not with the newly created one.

You do not start at level one in Wizardry 8, as I have said like 3 times now. You start at level FIVE whether you import or not. All newly created characters start AT LEVEL five.
no, newly created characters start at level 1.

False. Go boot up a game right now and check. I just now DID and they start at level 5.
Can we put him down? He's obviously lost his grip.

I wish I was good enough at RPGs to gain four levels just by starting the game. As it is, I just start at level 1 in Wiz8.

Eh, SkeleTony is a p. cool guy, with the exception of the very, very irritating habit of saying "false" to statements that are quite clearly true. But I think that with a bit of work we can leech it out of him and he will enjoy the true glory of M&M and Wiz.

LET OUR POWERS COMBINE!

Leech it out, you say?

Hmm... Maybe we should use Volourn or sheek? They suck.

Insert Title Here RPG Wokedex Codex Year of the Donut I'm very into cock and ball torture
The best reason to import from 7 to 8 is to get the Diamond Ring. You can only get this if you do something impossible to figure out without a guide in 6, then import from 6 to 7.

Why all this?
So you can, finally, return it to Bela in 8, and see that this has actually been programmed into the game, as a quest, with unique dialogue.

And then, minor as it may be, you realize "They really did plan for this!" and have a warm fuzzy feeling as the ring finally returns to its proper owner and you bask in the warm glow of something like 5 million XP.

Wizardry 8 is a real RPG. it is all about strategy and tactics, stats etc. it is not one of those games where you are given a pre-generated character with a cliche background story and set off to recruit other cliches and spend most of the game reading bad dialog and narration.
I nominate you for poster of the year. Glad to see some people still have their sanity. :salute: :salute: :salute:

SkeleTony flipped his lid. Haha, that was so classy.

Anyway, can I change classes when I import my characters between games? It sounds like you just make new characters from scratch and they get some bonuses.

During the weekend I yet again realized the biggest flaw of Wizardry 8. Whenever my party reaches bout level 10 I start to wonder how other combinations would fare and restart from level one:)

Also i play with mods for the first time (dodd with tweaks and fixes) and it's pretty fun. Some fights, even early, are insanely difficult for certain parties. I feel that having a paralyze spell from the very start is a must.

Oh, and what's with all the bard love in this thread? Weakest and most boring class imo. I'd always pick gadgeteer ahead of him as he is basically the same, only better. Opens locks, disarms traps, his magic-substitute - gadgets are better than instruments and omnigun is a cool weapon that levels together with its owner.

So far, the only real flaw I find is that combat music loop that is really maddening.

Yea, usually this thing is far enough to not get angered by the party.
Oh, ok. It wasn't that much of a threat though. Level 7 with around 350 hit points.

Weak? I'd accept boring, but weak?
Gadgeteer at lvl 11-12: Omnigun can shoot different kinds of ammo but does only 2-6 dmg with the basic stuff. Has a chance of blinding and k.o., fires 3-4 times per round. Has two gadgets, causing fireblast or noxious fumes. Not bad, but every other party member is more useful.
Bard at level 11-12: More hp, better equipment, can lockpick (yes, slightly less well than the gadgeteer, but has more skill points to waste at level-ups, so the bard lockpicks for me) can cause insanity, haste, mass freeze, heal all, hex, and some more stuff that isn't as useful.
The gadgeteer is the only party member I could easily live without. So it's no problem that Crock decided to kidnap her :smug:

Yeah, let's talk about some fixed level (and what about paralysis and terror?) and ignore all the awesome gadgets that can be acquired :smug:

As I said - bard and gadgeteer are basically the same, difference being that gadgie is better in later parts of the game (yes, bard gets some instruments pretty early and has an edge at the beginning) which means better overall. And omnigun is a cool and useful feature.

pretty much, though i think that, at least in vanilla played with 8 party members, bard is more useful than gadgeteer for a bigger chunk of playtime.
since you´re playing with Dodd + Daegan Tweaks, don´t be afraid to have both in your party - with all the upgradeable instruments/gadgets they´re both really, really useful from start to finish. bard becomes rather overpowered later due to one added alchemy spell he can acquire instrument for, but that i really welcomed as it efficiently solves the issue with potential tedium caused by random high HP groups which start to pop up once player hits level 20 or so.
in my game with Dodd + Tweaks combo, bard had most kills at the end :).

What about them? Duct tape: 10 charges.
Terror (which early gadget even gives that?): I don't use stuff that makes the enemies run away.

The omnigun isn't that good, especially considering what other weapons float around and considering that I'd rather fully heal my whole party than kill off/incapaciate a single enemy. So back to asking: When does a gadgeteer become so much better than a bard that it's valid to say the bard is weak and boring compared to it (and all other classes)? Answer: never :smug:
The bard is better for at least the first 40%, equal for another 40% and perhaps a little weaker in certain aspects for the last 20% of the game.

But hey, go on playing your underpowered builds. Wiz8 is too easy when you know what you're doing anyway :smug:

Dunno about the rest of you guys, but on my last playthrough with Flamestryke's mod, my bard performed ten times as well as the gadgeteer did. In fact, my bard ended up with the highest number of kills on my party by far through generous spamming of instrument-mediated fireballs.

I think the reason my bards seem to do better is because I find the instruments easier to find than the gadgets - they're in more obvious "Look, I bet there's a magic item hidden in this guarded chest!" locations than the rather mundane crap that composes the gadgets. Sure, you can buy a lot of the gadget components from vendors, but you first have to GET to the vendors through hordes of monsters to do so, making this not exactly easy, and unless you're using a guide, knowing what to combine to make a new gadget isn't exactly intuitive either (porthole + a chamberpot make a gadget shooting poison gas. Yeah.....right.)

Not sure why you like the omnigun - compared to pretty much all other ranged weapons, it's kinda lame. It has a fairly low chance of causing status effects and doesn't do that impressive damage. Besides, you don't want to waste your precious endurance ATTACKING people, you want to spam more AoEs, holds and debuffs!

My gadgeteer was still a good party member, I made good use of the X-ray gadget, the shielding gadget and the one casting Suffocate All or whatever. My bard was just sooooo much more useful.

I like them both. Instruments are more easily acquired and they don't need to be merged to be of any use, but high level gadgets are more impressive and allow the gadgeteer access to some of the best spells in the game. All in all I have no special preference, but I often use only one of the two in my initial party.
