I don't think Thief is using a simple spherical propagation for sounds. Just try to open and close a door and listen to the different effect from a sound source in the adiacient room.

Infamous master thief Garrett struck again tonight. After easily defeating the wimpy zombies haunting the mines who caused the hammershites to close the operation down, Garrett lays waste to the entire garrison without even breaking a fingernail. It's lucky that they all died in church, they need to pray that they don't come back as haunts... because I'm just getting warmed up.

The prisoners thought they could escape in the chaos through the mines, but unfortunately it's hard to swim after being sliced to ribbons by a highly skilled thief.

Over thirty murders and a bag full of treasure, a fine bit of thievery if I don't say so myself. All thanks to the master swordsmanship and sharpshooting skills that Garrett picked up during his keeper training.

the larper is immunized against all dangers: one may call him a retard, a shiteater, an npc, a storyfag, it all runs off him like water off a raincoat. but call him a larper and his shit gayme trash and you will be astonished at how he recoils, how injured he is, how he suddenly shrinks back: "no you ...you are retarded!1"

this is true though, but for some reason not always

~pseudo edit after googling how it works~
...its spherical, minDistnace, maxDistance, gradient between, but:

the reason why i found sound weird is that the sound-room-gates can be in open space
and thats why some walls dont block sound at all - they arent gates
most doors are gates, or cell portals to use the words from the powerpoint above, so they filter sound

It's 3 dimensional, binaural sound propagation back in 1998:
every shooter on the market had this fake 3d sound in stereo headphones via reverb shit going on
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_audio_effect

fTo5sw5.png

the question is if th1ef actually used a3d to any meaningful extent and i doubt it

now i of course cant test it cause no audio card but i choose to believe that it was marketing shit just like all of it
I think you might've missed the most important line in the Wikipedia article:

On the search for the legendary Horn of Cuntus, Garrett runs in to a family of peaceful bouncin' baby burricks. The first rule of thievery is, of course, to leave no witnesses so he carves them up and leaves the meat to rot. A thief as rich as Garrett doesn't need to lug around farty burrick steaks.

dump009.png

Zombies are one of the world's weakest and most pathetic creatures, so seeking a challenge, Garrett piles up the exploded remains of all the zombies who used to wander the halls, throwing in the corpse of this dumbass that set up camp on the main zombie thoroughfare as a bonus. Unfortunately, they didn't all fuse into a giant corpse abomination which might have actually made him break a sweat. Oh well, easy money it is, I guess.

dump010.png

35 kills on this job, but it's mostly zombies who are so weak that you can kill them with water arrows which are the most useless arrows in the game and burricks who stand around burping at you as an attack. Not a true test of Garrett's thief skills, and certainly not enough to sate the bloodlust that he and the thief franchise are famous for.

I can't believe this. Some punk named "Ramirez" let his balls grow bigger than his brain and took a shot at Garrett. Everyone in town knows of Garrett from all the murders he does on thief jobs, so this must have something to do with the cycle of violence that we all learned about for the first time in The Last of Us 2. Too bad for Ramirez that the cycle of violence made a house call and now he and his cronies are all out in the street, stinking up the neighborhood until garbage day rolls around.

dump012.png

It's odd that a guy who can only afford to hire 32 bodyguards would pick a fight with Garrett, the world's deadliest thief. Oh well, this mansion was actually a lot nicer than Bafford's so Garrett will probably move in to this one once the cleaners get all the blood and scorch marks out of pretty much every room.

You are literally playing the game wrong.
Whats so wrong with having a combat run in Thief?
Nothing. The best thing in Thief is that you can try to overcome the obstacles as you wish. Infact this is the way I played Thief for the first time. At the time the stealth mechanics was so new and relatively unknown that I instinctively played it as a doom clone. It was very intense and one of my best gaming experience nevertheless.

retarded trolling
You could watch those 2 videos that I linked in that post you quoted

more retarded trolling
Then go and play those titles, shut up, and stop wasting our time.
stop engaging with it
It was going so well. His first attempt at trolling was completely ignored and then he posted again and everyone bit the hook. C'mon guys, The Simpsons already told you how to beat this in 1995: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treehouse_of_Horror_VI#Attack_of_the_50-Foot_Eyesores

What I love about games like Thief is 25 years later fans have created and added to the game in a way impossible in the past. I love that the Thief experience now is something much bigger than the devs ever thought possible. And amazingly the game doesn't have hoverboards and star wars skins in. It really shows that modern copyright is a flawed concept. There is no way that developers and developers only have the best idea and vision for a creation.

Garrett got to thinking the other day.... this little bitch Ramirez could not have made such a boneheaded move on his own. It was time to send a message to the guild of "thieves" that prance around the city like they own the place. The message would be hand delivered, on the end of a sword, into the guts of any man found to be in cahoots with these ne'er-do-wells.

dump014.png

It was a glorious massacre. Gotta say, these guys call themselves thieves but they sure suck at sword fighting. How do you expect to steal anything when you can't even figure out which end of a blade to hold? These miscreants just hang out in the sewers all day and gamble for small change. Robbing the entire casino was less lucrative than a convenience store stickup. "Heh, I bet you guys wish you stayed home today" Garrett muses as he stacks the mutilated corpses of his victims on a card table.

dump015.png

Every man who stood in the way of Garrett's stealthy longsword was sliced to ribbons, punctured with razor-tipped arrows, set on fire with magic crystals or shredded with shrapnel from IEDs. Anyone who had the good sense to surrender was clobbered with a club until they started thinking that the corpses might be the lucky ones. 49 confirmed kills and 20 brutal beatings later, Garrett is now the only thief left in town. Now it's time to make some real money.

Playing it fun can't be wrong. I'd follow his lead if it wasn't for my autism, but I admit that the final levels of both T1 & T2 are a breath of fresh air. You can go totally murdercrazy nuts in them, finally. The downside is that the final levels of T1 have no human enemies, and Soulforge Cathedral only a few.

Is he? Unless you engage in combat, you won't be able to utilize water arrows to clean up blood and (when blessed) to blow up zombies.

Another underrated aspect of Thief's combat is how expressive the enemies are, with some great lines they yell in the heat of combat. And there is that parrying mechanic you can do with your sword.

Doors can have a sound block percentage value, which blocks a certain amount of sound that comes its way.

Swordfighting is insanely difficult in this and T2, even on the easiest difficulty. T3 made a choice that seems sensible from a story point of view - what's the point of carrying a heavy, cumbersome sword if a dagger would fit a thief's lifestyle better? Garrett doesn't need to consider the possibility of being cornered, he's a master of escape. Well okay, you need to be prepared for every scenario, but a sword is still cumbersome for a stealthy thief, until it's needed that its.

It's actually not that hard, you just gotta believe in yourself. Their weakness is that they have no footwork to speak of and can get stunlocked. As long as you have space to move you can keep moving in and out of range charging overhead strikes. Archers are the biggest problem, but you can stunlock a lone one with fast slices. I've been clearing whole rooms of goons in melee and all of my deaths except one have been from getting stuck on corpses and then cornered.

Here
Strap Yourselves In
Bash an (armed) humanoid in the head repeatedly with your blackjack, right after you revealed your position, until they are no longer in a vertical stance, in 1v1 fights – if you succeed, it should boost your confidence to engage in melee battles with a sword.
This is better than repeating the combat tutorial in the first Thief, in my opinion. And funnier, because they'll be so pissed with you.

I didn't remember that the Keeper training level has a live sparring partner for swordfighting, I wonder if he gives you a realistic impression of the actual opponents' abilities. I recall that parrying the fast strikes is really difficult.

You don't want to worry about parrying, it's hard to even tell when they're able to damage you and they can't hit you at all if you're out of range. You only throw up the parry maybe for a second while backing up if you misjudge your distance and stand too close when you release the overhead strike. I rebound parry to RMB so it's easier to hit. The guards can't really seem to hit a moving target, I think they have to plant their feet to swing.

So it's like overhead, block, backup, turn around, run away at a 45° angle while charging an overhead, repeat. Once you can do that, you can get comfortable enough to do more ballsy maneuvers.

As the only thief left in town, Garret the Guard Gelder has the pick of the litter when it comes to thief jobs and though crime has dropped precipitously in the city, the murder rate continues to spike. Garrett naturally accepts a job to steal a sword, since that's his favorite tool of the thieving trade as any true thief fan can tell you. Even if this creepy chick doesn't pay up, you can't complain about a free sword.

dump017.png

Now, this guy we robbed turned out to be a real weirdo and even worse, some kinda wizard. Garrett hates wizards even more than he hates letting people survive one of his robberies. As a peace offering, Garrett uses the 21 mutilated corpses of the guardsmen that he encountered to hopefully make a fine fertilizer for all the magic plants that this guy likes so much. Don't wanna wake up with some kinda horrible wizard affliction like fungus lungs or mega diarrhea.
