Guido Henkel of G3 Studios has kickstarted his new cRPG project Thorvalla today. Here's the official press release:

G3 Studios unveils THORVALLA© on Kickstarter

Computer game legend Guido Henkel returns with a brand new role-playing game; Fans can contribute to help create new gaming universe

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. – The future of computer gaming took another giant leap forward today with renowned game content creator G3 Studios premiering their new computer role-playing game THORVALLA. In addition, the official Kickstarter campaign for THORVALLA launched today, allowing the fans to directly help raise the funds necessary to develop and produce the game.

Legendary computer RPG designer Guido Henkel returns to the industry as the driving force behind THORVALLA. With almost 30 years of experience in the computer games industry, Henkel has designed and worked on such landmark titles as Planescape: Torment, Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny, Realms of Arkania: Star Trail, Realms of Arkania: Shadows over Riva, Fallout 2, Neverwinter Nights and many others. Virtually all of his games have been cited and honored with awards across the globe, cementing his reputation as one of the industry’s premier computer RPG designers.

“THORVALLA is a game I’ve wanted to make for some time,” says Henkel, “but the state of the computer games industry was such that I simply did not feel there was a way to properly bring the concept to life.”

With the advent of crowd-funding and the rise of Kickstarter in particular, the tables have now turned, enabling content creators to stay true to their artistic visions without the corporate pressures and interests of traditional game publishing.

“Kickstarter brings the fans and the creative people closer together,” Henkel adds, “and for the first time in 20 years, I feel that there is an opportunity to make a game for the fans, with the fans.”

THORVALLA conjures up images of Nordic origin, but that is only the beginning as the project’s Art Director Thu-Lieu Pham points out. “The game incorporates many real world influences. Although it is a high fantasy setting, we are trying to make use of world mythologies and civilizations. While some of it is Nordic, the game universe also features tribal people, much like Native Indians, as well as societies that resemble the rich Asian cultures.”

Naturally, the game will also feature more traditional fantasy elements, including orcs and goblins, as well as an expansive magic system that enriches the world and the player’s abilities. With the help of veteran game designer Neal Hallford, whose credits include games such as Betrayal at Krondor, Might & Magic III: Isles of Terra, Planet's Edge, Champions of Norrath, Lords of Everquest, and Dungeon Siege, the world of Thorvalla will be alive with creatures, rich with lore and ripe with opposing factions.

THORVALLA also reinvents the mechanics of role-playing. “It is time to think outside the box a little,” noted Henkel. “For me, much of the attraction of this project comes from the fact that I can try out some unique new ideas that will help set the game apart from what we have seen in the genre so far. Who says that role-playing outcomes have to be determined by dice rolls, necessarily? What if we applied a bit more tactics, instead?”

In addition to funding THORVALLA through Kickstarter, G3 Studios is also using the official www.thorvalla.com website for fans to contribute to the project through Paypal.

Namedropping excersise: Guido Henkel and Neal Hallford can offer some references. Games they've worked on include: Realms of Arkania, Betrayal at Krondor, Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2, Neverwinter Nights and Dungeon Siege to name but a few.

Have a look at their kickstarter page. Excerpt:

Enter a world steeped in Norse mythology, tribal mysticism and sword-and-sorcery fantasy. Meet a people as rugged and fearless as the elements they weather, fueled by an indomitable spirit of adventure. Come face to face with monsters, beasts and denizens of the Underworld in a heroic tale of conquest. Come, enter Thorvalla!

Featuring single-player party-based play, Thorvalla allows you to take advantage of the traits and abilities of a variety of NPCs that you can add to your party as the story unfolds. Along with meaningful character interaction and a wealth of dialogue, these kinds of decisions influence not only how the story evolves but also the strategies you will have to apply in order to succeed and progress through the game. Unlike modern RPGs, in Thorvalla, there won’t be any babysitting the player, funneling you down a virtually linear path of no-defeat. This is going to be an RPG where you will have to save your game… often.

Probably Overpledged $150, but only because Henkel and Hallford are on it. I still don't like the mentioned "trading-card" word and the cartoony sketches. But time will tell, I remain optimistic.

Pledged $25 as well.

Given the Kickstarter fatigue, I wonder if this can get to $1 million... They don't have the same name recognition as Obsidian, after all. Maybe if a lot of German gamers pledge.

no they don't - their economy is slowing down and soon if things won't change spain + italy+portugal+france will drag them into recession.

I would love real life rpg where you controll greek people.

I'll probably pledge the 15 bucks, if only because of Guido and Neal. I'm definitely feeling KS fatigue though. so this will be one of the last projects I'll back until I start seeing some finished projects.

The goal is way too high, there is no way they'll reach 1M. :(
I'm going to pledge regardless, but a lot of people are experiencing Kickstarter fatigue - I think it would've been prudent to either wait a bit or set a more realistic goal.

Hmm... You know, I actually wanted to stop pledging for games that show only their idea, and no gameplay, or demo or pre-alpha stuff or, well, anything but some concepts.
I'll wait for the updates, maybe they will convince me to make an exception for this one.

It is definitely bold. But the goal translates the game's ambition. Small goals drive pledges away. I'm also concerned that the big game sites aren't mentioning this yet. It is early, but shouldn't they be covering this already?

He had carefully chosen words for the pitch and didn't say anything retarded, other than that I get Oldskul RPG 2.0 vibe.
10$ difference between "early bird" and regular lowest tier... It sure encourage people to pledge when "early birds" run out.

Pledged 15$, but I don't expect it to hit the goal.

Edit: Concepts are laughable and trading cards component... I am a simulation fag and I hate this kind of tacked on abstract bullshit.
