Maybe you should take the really daring, unconventional, out-of-the-box, lateral thinking, totally bananas option of checking out the kickstarter page?

I'll be the first to admit it, I don't know who this Guido Henkel is. He looks like the caricature of a stereotypical German nerd. And he is stupid enough to record his pitch video in front of a Mac.

My feeling is this is going to fail, exactly like Shaker.

One day, you will play Realms of Arkania. And you will be filled with awe and then frustration at the lack of games made with as much effort and love at creating -not story, combat or art faggotry but- a coherent Role-Playing experience full of details that delivers on all fronts.

Then you will realise that this German nerd guy with the weirdo name like Guido was behind both Realms of Arkania and Planescape Torment. And then you shall dwell forever in eternal damnation.

Clear and honest speech on video, no oldschool bullshit like int he shaker video, and this guy seems to really have expereinces with rpg, so i backed it too, but that doesnt seems to go very fast.

For crying out loud, he hasn't even bothered to show himself in the KS comment section.

In b4 not funded (and it's a damn shame too), hope he learns something from this, or even better, scraps this pitch and comes with a new one that he takes seriously

This wasn't a strong pitch at all, I doubt anyone got excited after seeing that video. Looks like some of these devs could reallly use marketing people to help make their pitches more presentable. Doubt it's going to make it.

True, although in this particular case, you don't exactly have to be a marketing specialist too see what's wrong...

A lot of mistakes in this kickstarter project unfortunately... Pitch seems weak and generic too. I think this will, unfortunately, fail. Maybe if there are hordes of german fans it won't. Money isn't exactly "pouring in". And they want 1 million minimum. :(

There's one thing I don't understand though. Why do all these "new" kickstarters want 25$ for a game? Yeah, there's early bird, but that's limited, here especially. What's wrong with Fargo's 15$ for a game (digital)? I think some would have a lot more success if they sold it for 15$. 25$ is almost double! Not everyone is from firstworldia, in fact I think the majority of the backers aren't. Firstworldians mostly don't care about such obscure games (there are exceptions).

Also artwork sucks.

I'm actually more drawn to Kickstarters where the "marketing" component is less. I like honest and open pitches. I would like more details about the game though. I realize game devs want to keep some things under wraps, but they need us to buy into the game, and it's hard to do so with just name recognition. Not to mention that most of the Bioware/Bethesda crowd have never played BaK or RoK. I've pledged but I too dread that this will fail.

The problem is that they don't have name recognition outside hardcore but small communities like the Codex. For the vast majority of people stumbling upon the project on KS, Guido Henkel, Neal Hallford, Realms of Arkania or Betrayal at Krondor doesn't mean anything. But that's just the beginning on how they have messed up this KS project. First and foremost, they added it to "Games" instead of "Video Games", and a lot of gamers filter KS project exclusively by "Video Games", which means that a lot of people will miss it altogether. The anime artwork will be a turn off for many. The lack of details will be a turn off for many. A lot of old timers/rigid people will be put off by the card mechanic, even though it has potential. The lackluster video doesn't do them any service either. They can't just go stumbling into this thing like Obsidian because they don't have the name recognition of Obsidian.

Let's be realistic here, it has already failed, redo and relaunch are in order, with a lower set goal and some more fleshed out mechanics, and better artwork too.

I'd love for this to happen, but it seems fairly implausible. If he had done the pitch video wearing Nameless One makeup perhaps it would have been more successful.

Their real problem, first and foremost, is the press. I didn't look everywhere but nothing on RPS, Kotaku, PCGamer... Shaker was all over the place on day 1. Hopefully that'll change and then we'll be able to estimate the chances of success. As of now pledges seem to come from Henkel and Hallford's Facebook communities, Codex and Watch. And Gamebanshee.

Shit, this one is doomed to fail most miserably. I hope they'll scrap it right away and try again later.

If the designers want to make a traditional cRPG, then make a traditional cRPG. I would like nothing more than to see something that replicates the spirit and mechanics of Realms of Arkania, or else what good are those credentials? I'm getting too much of a "we are going to change the direction of RPGs!" vibe (and yes, this was telegraphed in earlier interviews). Sorry, but I want dice rolls. And there's no point being disparaging about it. Isn't the iconic emblem of the Codex a troll carrying a 20 sided goddamned die!

Hope they reconsider their direction, and go back to a classic approach. I guess I'm one of those oldtimers/rigid players that was destined to be unhappy with this project. Alas, something that recreated the RoA experience would have been wonderful.
