Yep. Tie was great, but hard to play in Windows.

Let me put FS2 this way: I bought a 70 dollar flight stick *specifically* to play this $10 game.
Wow, what a resounding recommendation. Do I need a joy stick to play, or can I wing it with my keyboard and mouse?

Don't play it with mouse and keyboard. You just wouldn't be doing justice to this great game. I've used my flight stick in maybe three games, and I don't regret buying it at all.

Space dogfight sims like FreeSpace, Tachyon, and X-Wing practically require a joystick. You'll wear out even an optical mouse when chasing interceptor-type fighters. I could probably outmaneuver an Ursa bomber and possibly an Erinyes heavy fighter with a mouse, but trying to shoot down a Perseus stealth fighter would make me cry.

As for me, I'm still using my ten-year-old Gravis Thunderbird.

I think my personal favorite mission so far is the nebula one where you "need to change your shorts" two seconds in (spoilers avoided). It's just so cool.
