Xenon2
JA2
Fallout
Monkey Island

I can't claim it's the absolute best selection ever, but all those games have (at least one but in most cases more than one) instantly recognizable pieces that I can remember off the top of my head which fit well into their respective games.

Every one by now knows my love of Cryo music, especially lost eden and dune, and trip hop in general (bloodlines hollywood theme) but i was always partial to sensible soccer too.

I quite like the amiga menu theme (not the intro, that is emblematic too).

Those long piano notes, reverb, and that large silence at the beginning. It's like a piece of my childhood. I would start the game just to listen while doing something else, since it's so calm.

I am listening to it now, and i put my hand on my portable computer and i can hear the speakers vibrate the whole computer :).

I've been listening to a Lost Eden LP on youtube, the gameplay looks almost identical to Dune. This would have been pretty awesome to play when I was a kid, shame I never heard of it :(

The best piece of music written for a videogame ever is in my opinion Bio Hazard from the Snatcher intro. A fucking heavy and menacing tune, that sets the mood for the game nicely. Also, Duke Nukem 3D theme gets an honourable mention.

Pretty much every top 10 list is destined to suck. That said, I will throw out some game artists/music I think everyone should get acquainted with:

- Akira Yamaoka (from the Silent Hill games) - He's a genius. Ethereal, haunting, with a knack for grooving beats and great trip-hop and electronica influences. Too many good songs to count. Just to mention a few: Sickness Unto Foolish Death, Alone in the Town, A Stray Child, Breeze In Monochrome Night, Pianissimo Epilogue, Save Before You Quit, The Terminal Show. Oh, this Maternal Heart remix is AMAZING.

- Philippe Vachey (from LBA 1 and 2) - An extremely underappreciated game composer. Music is in a great romantic style--very whimsical and evocative. I really wish he had a full orchestra performing his work. Examples: LBA's Theme, Hamalayi, Honey Bee (the hook of this song is crazy good), Song of Gabriel, Emerald Moon, The Rebels, Desert. LBA music might just be my most favorite game music ever... Induces tears of joy and nostalgia, haha.

- The Castle Crashers soundtrack is pretty damn good if electronica, dubstep, industrial, etc., is your kind of thing. Examples: Winterbliss, Factory, Chaoz Japan, Vain Star, Landfall, Don't.

- ME2's Suicide Mission track is good. Really epic and nice use of motifs throughout the soundtrack really. ME1's ending credits song, M4, Pt. II, is good too, although the vocals are kinda weak. Faunts in general is a decent band.

I second a lot of what's already been mentioned: HOMM (from 2, 3, and 4 especially... I'm surprised no one has mentioned four yet--jungle porn battle music is credited), Deus Ex, Fallout, Diablo (Matt Uleman is the fucking man), etc.

Homeworld, Mafia, Freedom Fighters/Hitman series (Jesper Kyd stuff), Diablo games, Morrowind, Max Payne series, Shadow of the Colossus, and the Civilization series, particularly II and IV.

Homeworld, Shadow of the Colossus and Mafia are my personal favorite game soundtracks. There is a surprising amount of very good video game music out there. You can even find totally kickass tracks in the old beeps and boops era, like M.U.L.E.'s opening track:

A soundtrack I like simply because it does things that I think should be elementary in game soundtracks is that of Aquaria. It establishes motifs early on, then interweaves, varies, and improvises on them in the rest of its tracks. This helps the game feel more like a coherent whole and provides another means by which it can tie situations and themes together. Here are some examples:

One of the first songs you hear:

Later:

Of course, this stuff only applies if you evaluate a game's soundtrack as a whole rather than on a song-by-song basis. Also, the soundtrack is the best thing about Aquaria--besides that, it's basically easy metroidvania/Enya: the game.

It feels different. The companion model is similar and both are quite linear, but lost eden feels even more so, since dune has the strategic layers and the hidden sietchs and smuggler bases you can find.

Dune could be a lot better though, both as a easy adventure and (especially) as a strategic game. But it is a hell of a atmospheric game.

Was this:

in the original games or is my memory playing tricks on me?

I really dig that tune.

It was at the beginning of the film with the shots following the virus through the laboratory. I actually remember exactly where I was sitting in the theater (memories associated with sounds) and everything because this music was so kickass and I was just sitting there thinking how good this tune was.

I could've sworn that I've heard the high-key faux-piano part in the games (played 2 and 3 extensively) but the low key grinding was different somehow in my memory, which is probably totally playing tricks on me. But yeah, the contrast between seemingly light-hearted tune and the ominous grind is very memorable and a great mood setter.

Looking at the geoscape...
Zelda? Sonic? FF7? Portal?! Watafuk?! They are really trying to pull at the proles heart strings here. The best? This list was made so people could go "Oh yeah, I remember that game!". Music has nothing to do with it. The video should be called "the games you KNOW and their music". Nothing top in there.

Drakkhen has the best score. From the title screen, to character creation, to some awesome wayfaring tracks.

Portal? Fuken Portal?! You cunts!

Where the hell can I download the lost eden tracks :(

ytube.

Get this plugin if you have firefox
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... be-to-mp3/

Get it while it's hot (before hollywood and the moronic US government and its investment on imaginary property kills ytube and breaks the net into regions and fucks it up with tiered pricing at the ISPs and traffic shaping and walled gardens enforced by hardware DRM for corporations)
