I'm mildly surprised no one ever made a thread about this. A rock-solid title reviving the classic gameplay and atmosphere of the earliest Resident Evils and Silent Hills. My full Steam review here. Good fun, good combat, good puzzles, good resource management, good soundtrack, even has a plot twist or two I didn't see coming. Only the pickiest and most joyless fans of the genre could complain. $20 for 20 hours, worth full price imo.

Was tempted to grab it on the steam sale but didn't in the end. I'll probably grab it next time it goes on sale, it seems interesting.

Seems like we're getting more indie classic style survival horror titles as of late.

I've been eyeing it for some time now. I'm hearing only good things about it.

Yup, it seems that PS1 and PS2 era style of survival horror is FINALLY having its own revival. So far this and Them and Us had decent reception, and there is a number of promising upcoming titles in that vein (Conscript, Lunar Effect, Post Trauma...).

There is also that Alisa one that is apparently alright. Creepy dolls ain't my ideal setting, but it supposedly plays pretty close to the original RE titles.

I played it for a bit. I'm liking the atmosphere and visuals, and puzzles from little I've seen seem alright and they even included hilariously bad voice acting to really hammer that nostalgia in. But combat might just be the worst thing i've ever fucking experienced. I've just died to one of these wheelchair enemies because I kept shooting without ever hitting the enemy and I ran out of heals. This shit + limited saves makes me unsure if I'll finish this. I am pretty sure combat in original RE was never this bad, and it sure as shit wasn't this bad in Silent Hill 1/2.

I'm honestly surprised to see this. You're not supposed to have to aim at all; Caroline should "lock on" to enemies when you lift your weapon, and even track them if they move. I used mouse & keyboard controls and I don't think I changed any settings. Never missed a shot, even shooting at off-camera enemies.

Try this: go into a room where you know an enemy is in line of sight, but far away. Turn Caroline to face the wall and lift weapon. Does she draw and automatically turn to face the enemy? If not, something's not working like it should.

I might've gotten fucked over by that free aim shit while trying to aim when still running away from enemy. Anyway it's a clunky system and I wish I could just move while aiming like I can in Silent Hill. This is probably something I can get used to, but combined with the fact that I never enjoyed a limited save system in any game ever, dying while wrestling with clunky controls just triggers the shit out of me. I hate repeating steps like solving a puzzle just because I couldn't save for a longer time.

Multidirectional I think once you learn to "speak the language" of the controls you will find it much less problematic. I am really NOT a high reflexes twitchy gamer and was surprised to realize that I got through the whole game without ever seeing a Game Over screen (i.e. I never died ... although I came close many times). I hope you are able to overcome this. Once you are in the groove it should be fine.

One spoiler you should be aware of though
There is one enemy in the game that may be stunned, but not killed. I won't tell you exactly what it is, but if you see a "boss fight starting" cutscene and you think this might be the one, consider running away, at least if you haven't saved lately, instead of spending all your ammo and putting your game in a no-win state.

I might finish it it's just gonna take really long if I don't stop dying. That depends on whether game becomes much easier later or not. When I play a game like this with limited saves I take at least a day break every time I die or else I start getting too pissed. I can keep trying bosses in a game like Sekiro or DMC5 over and over after dying to them 50 times no problem, but make me redo steps like solving a puzzle (even if it's not a hard one) and I start getting butthurt and immediately need a break.

Emo OP is correct. Tormented Souls is not just good, it's amazing. I wanted to make a thread about it back when I finished it a few months ago but forgot. Honestly wish I'd grown up playing this instead of Jill Sandwich Resi 1, although, to be fair, Tormented Souls has some hilarious cringe dialogue of its own as well.
A great OST, too.

I posted the playlist, listen to it ALL.

The fuck? Combat is serviceable and literally miles ahead of Resi 1 and 2 and SH 1 and 2. I'll just say you're misremembering and let's try to sweep under the rug the fact you just praised combat in SH1, which has some of the worst controls OF ALL TIME. :happytrollboy:

You are a fucking moron. At no point did I ever praise combat in SH. It's shit in SH and it's even worse in Tormented Souls. But at least in SH I can move around while aiming. I guess in that retard head of yours this reads as "omg SH combat is amazing, best combat of all time!".

It's literally dogshit. There is no comparison. You've never played Silent Hill 1.

For a second there I thought my reply to you might've been a bit too harsh but nope, you are indeed a complete imbecile.

There is literally nothing you can say at this point that will make your lying about playing Silent Hill 1 become a reality. Throw as many temper tantrums as you want!

Action in SH used to simulate character not proficient in combat in any way. Homecoming did away with that by turning SH into beat 'em up fighting game.

Another decent recent indie game in this vein is Song of Horror.

Tormented Souls is very cool for the atmosphere, the visuals and the puzzles (and some things that are spoiler), but there is zero "survival" because of how convenient the backdash is, it makes the combat trivial (just kill everything in sight!) Still a good game and a GOTY contender.

I also did Alisa, it was almost the opposite game: dogshit visuals, okay puzzles, very combat and boss oriented, but still no "survival" because of the currency the ennemies drop (just kill everything in sight 2, but this time at least it's challenging). Fine game too, but seems unfinished (the face doors? The shortcut with the rope? The rushed ending?)

It looks like Them and Us is going for the "survival" thing but the dropping of items gives me PTSD from RE:0...

There's Lamentum. Also has this oldschool survival vibe like old creepy mansion, locked doors, puzzles, monsters, resource management. Sadly, when combat starts your esteemed victorian gentleman turns into lighning fast uberninja. All of the horror atmosphere vanishes when you can hit and dodge in circles around your enemies.

Them and Us is seriously undermined by a misguided attempt at combining over-the-shoulder perspective with fixed camera angles in one game (you can pick a preferable camera mode at the start of the game). Because of this decision the game does justice to neither of perspectives. In fixed camera mode the game suffers from janky and inconsistent movement mechanics, as well as from the typical "enemies attack you from beyond the screen". Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, except in Them and Us the sound design isn't good enough to predict what's coming at you, and some enemies have very random reaction to getting hit (especially dogs in a hedge maze).

The lack of item box during the first quarter of the game is also pretty annoying, as it adds almost nothing to the game. At least in RE Zero you had two characters with two sets of inventories, here it's just a busywork. The game even outright breaks the 4th wall by giving player a message "you can drop items on the ground if your inventory is full, don't worry, you'll get usual RE item boxes later into the game". Way to ruin my immersion lol.
