Total War: WARHAMMER II – The Twisted & The Twilight FAQ
Total War: WARHAMMER II
Ella McConnell

November 19 2020
The Twisted & The Twilight is the latest Legendary Lords Pack for Total War: WARHAMMER II, and introduces two rival Legendary Lords from the world of Warhammer Fantasy Battles, each with their own factions, objectives, mechanics, units and playstyle, for use in both the Eye of the Vortex and Mortal Empires campaigns as well as custom and multiplayer battles.

Throt the Unclean, Master Mutator of Clan Moulder, has grown ravenously hungry following a lifetime of mutating experiments, believing that consuming the magic of Ariel, Queen of the Wood Elves, can save him from his eternal starvation. He is opposed by the Sisters of Twilight, Elven twins who were once a single being before being split into two bodies by the Weave. Together they must complete their mission to prepare the glade for Ariel’s ritual, which will heal the rift in the world.

The Twisted & The Twilight includes:

  • Two unique Legendary Lords leading their own factions:
    • Throt the Unclean, Master Mutator of Clan Moulder and one of the nine Lords of Hell Pit
    • The Sisters of Twilight Naestra and Arahan, Emissaries of Queen Ariel
  • Powerful new units and Heroes for both the Skaven and the Wood Elves, including:
    • Brood Horrors, Mutant Rat Ogres, Packmasters, Wolf Rats, and the terrifying Ghoritch for the Skaven
    • Zoats, Great Stag Knights, Bladesingers, Spellweavers, and Queen Ariel of Athel Loren herself for the Wood Elves
  • An Old World Update for the Wood Elves
For full details on The Twisted & The Twilight, including the full unit rosters for both Legendary Lords, head over to the Steam page to read more as well as get 10% off the launch price if you pre-order.

Do I need to start a new campaign?
If you want to make the most of the recent plethora of changes then yes, we’d advise that you do start a new campaign.

Can I keep my mods?
We advise that you remove all mods until their respective creators have updated them in alignment with the update.

Steam is not installing the DLC or the free-LC – what’s happening?
Be patient. If there’s an issue with the DLC, we will communicate this via our official social channels. If you don’t see anything there, you should clear your cache and restart Steam.

Yes, The Twisted & The Twilight will be available to play in both the Eye of the Vortex and Mortal Empires Campaign, and can also be used in campaign, custom, and battle modes.

What new mechanics will Throt the Unclean bring to The Twisted & The Twilight?
The new campaign mechanic for Throt the Unclean is The Flesh Laboratory.

When playing as Throt the Unclean, you gain access to his personal Flesh Laboratory. Here you can grow new monsters or augment existing ones to create new horrific abominations.

  • Shape and customise your units with augments that can be stacked to create different combinations of effects
  • Augmenting a unit too much can make them unstable and lead them to slowly mutate, gaining negative traits
  • Units can be “recycled” for raw materials, so even defective units still have a purpose
  • Recycled units can also be replaced by monsters grown in the Growth Vat
  • The more Growth Juice in the Growth Vat, the better the quality of monster that comes out
What new mechanics will the Sisters of Twilight bring to The Twisted & The Twilight?
The new campaign mechanic for the Sisters of Twilight is The Forge of Daith.

During a Sisters of Twilight campaign, the Sisters will gain a series of incidents and dilemmas that will grant them access to unique items crafted by Daith, the master smith of Vaul’s Anvil.

These dilemmas will enable the creation of new items or the upgrade of existing items made by Daith.

What’s the free content that will be released alongside the DLC?

What’s in the free Old World update that will be released alongside the DLC?
The Twisted & The Twilight will be released alongside an update of the Wood Elves faction. This includes:

AMBER AND TECHNOLOGY REWORK

  • Amber is no longer required for units or buildings, and all technologies that previously cost Amber have had the cost removed and been reworked
  • Eight new technologies have been added – these are the only things that will now cost Amber
  • Amber is no longer gained from controlling territory, and is instead awarded for healing Forests
HEALING THE FORESTS

  • In Mortal Empires, the Wood Elves still need to heal Athel Loren and restore the Oak of Ages. However, to do so they now need to travel the world and heal special Forest regions spread around the map. Each healed Forest will provide unique bonuses
  • A Forest’s health can be built up over time through various actions, such by securing its borders and building certain buildings. Once sufficiently restored, a Ritual can be performed to permanently heal the Forest
  • Every Forest also has unique Forest Encounters – interactable markers that provide narrative choices and let the player shape how they heal the Forest
  • As part of this system, new regions have been added to the campaign – four to Mortal Empires, and two to Vortex – giving the Wood Elves a presence on every part of the map
TRAVELLING THE DEEPROOTS

  • Wood Elves can now instantly transport their armies between Forest regions using the new Travel Deeproots ability (this ability comes with a cooldown)
When will the free content be available?
On the release day of The Twisted & The Twilight – the 3rd of December 2020.

Will The Twisted & The Twilight be released on macOS and Lin

Strap Yourselves In Pathfinder: Wrath
Stealing from the top reddit post:https://www.reddit.com/r/totalwar/comments/jx46g7/the_twisted_the_twilight/
-Can abandon settlements now.
-Ariel is a legendary hero akin to Kroak.

Welcome to athel loren, gentlerats. I will not lie-cheat, the chances of your survival are small-tiny - some may even turn against your friends into tree-thing fertilizer... But you have my-my word that I will use my genius-brilliance to ensure your bodies are turned into Hellpit Abominations. This is the greatest reward, more than even warpstone, for the advance of my-my position on the council is an eternal concern! Now, come. Follow me, strike down the tree-hippies that rise against us, allow me to find this shiny-stuff. I ask not for the good of the Skaven, but for my-my own selfish studies!

Also since this is the top post here, I will post some livestream talking points here:

  1. New map, new Amber.

  2. WE race now has specific 'Ancient Forest' settlements. They are scattered around the world. One new one in Naggarond, another one in Lustria. This implies both Vortex and ME maps are heavily changed. Gael Vale is also this type but Lothern is not.

  3. Old outpost system is still here to discourage players painting the map with WE. To compensate for this, there are more full settlements available for WE around the map now. WE buildings are reworked/buffed as well.

  4. There are specific settlements that belongs to the WE race and you need to occupy or let your ally to occupy. My guess is that this mechanics is tied in to the new WE victory condition.

  5. You can now abandon a settlement, any race can do this. It's only briefly brought up.

  6. World root is now instantaneous teleportation between the major WE settlements. Devs teleported a character from Athel Loren to Gale Vale instantaneously, and the lord also retains the movement.

  7. AI can't teleport, lucky us.

  8. The two new WE settlements are The Witchwood in Naggarond. This is where Sisters of Twilight starts. If you pick them they can also have Oak of Ages. The other one is called Pool of Life or something The Sacred Pools in Lustria.

  9. Sister of Twilight starts on eagle mounts. It's one Lord. Both sisters on the same eagle.

  10. Ariel is hero, not a lord.

  11. Great Stags unit: On par with Demigryph, a little bit squish but hits hard. Looks cool charging into the battle. Bambi is gonna get some revenge. It's also available as mount. They are shock cav units with shields and armor.

  12. SoT post-battle mechanics: After battle, you get a choice: Get a new enhanced weapon or upgrade an existing one. It's a trade-off between long term benefits and short-term sudden burst of combat prowess.

  13. 13 days from now, there will be livestream using SoT. That's the Wednesday after the next Wednesday.

  14. Q&A from chat: Ariel is available for all WE lords. SoT has easier time getting her. My spectulation is she's similar to Kroak?

  15. The next parts are on Throt. Throt is trying to kill Ariel for her magic to cure his hunger, using obviously subpar tactics.. Very on brand for Skaven. Throt spawns in Hellpit on ME but in Naggarond in Vortex. Ashrak is the settlement. He's next to Crone Hellebron

  16. Throt's starting war with Grond I think? There is also a WE minor faction called Avengers of Allisara next to him on the map I think. Maybe his next target? ~~These info are on World Events messages but I don't know if devs are on turn one. ~~ It's confirmed this is turn one. He starts war with Grond minor DE faction.

  17. Flesh Laboratory: spend food gold and flesh/mutagen resources to upgrade your common units. Some buffs: Give vanguard+stalk. The more you buff, the less stable they become. If the unit reaches 100 percent unstable, they essentially turn into Bloated Corpses. ROFL Legend is gonna have a field day cheesing this.

  18. Flesh Laboratory has the same upgrade mechanics with Warlock Laboratory for Ikit Claw. The more you upgrade, the stronger this mechanics become. Q&A starts here.

  19. Most important Q&A here: Is this the last DLC for WH2? Devs said they are neither denying or confirming this.

  20. All factions can shoot through trees in an indirect way. The arrows can penetrate some depth of trees without losing damage potential.

  21. New WE lord Spellweaver now has access to high and dark lores of magic. Ariel has dark+light+high magic, like Fat Toad Maz.

  22. Throt's enhancements have no visual changes unfortunately. It's too taxing on the game engine.
End of the stream. Next Wednesday and the Wednesday after that will have livestreams at 3 pm GMT.

Really like the idea of being able to teleport between forests rather than just map paint for a change. Would like to see that mechanic for dwarves (go through underway to nearby dwarf holds) since the current underway mechanic is pretty shit.

Skaven roster is gonna be huge now. I think they are already the biggest and definitely one of the most well-rounded next to Empire.

What do you all think of the trend of legendary heroes, such as Kroak and now Ariel, Ghotrich, and one other (forget the name, goes with FLC)? I like it, although I would add some less powerful characters. Kouran Blackhand, Shadowblade, and Hauclir come to mind.

Kroak's great.

Best artillery piece of the game. I mean, the game isn't hard, but seeing him killing hundreds every battle never got old. The main problem I guess is that you'll need a "special hero" that does shit that your standard heroes don't and for him to work outside the standard experience gain: Kroak's great because his basic utility require very little skill points and does shit the other casters do worse (and his lategame hero ability of flattening cities is flat out hilarious overkill for what it does).

TBF you also can't fully implement something Mazdamundi tier, who can nuke a moon, can you?

At this point its not so much about how powerful they are, but how recognizeable they are, which faction CA wants to update at a given moment and how much of an effort it would be to implement said content. Which's why Not!Joan of Arc made the cut.

Legendary Heroes are ok when they fill a battlefield niche, but they're absolute cancer when they can just be used as invulnerable agents. I remember the days of Warhammer 1 when Belegar's respawning ghosts would spam assassinate and raid on your armies over and over again until you wiped out their faction.

I wanted a beastmen overhaul, not another stupid skaven lord that makes me increase my blood pressure when i attempt to siege him.

Skaven are the official spicy meme reddit faction with "epic" mechanics like instant nuke abilities that look good on five-second social media clips. It's natural they get 99% of content.

Insert Title Here My team has the sexiest and deadliest waifus you can recruit.
They had to do the last of the 4 Skaven Great Clans. so it's not really a suprise.
I assume we get the Beastmen and Chaos rework in WH3, which will be Chaos and horde focused anyway.

Afaik they have said they want to rework every TW1 faction before TW3, and that there will be more TW2 dlc so it seems fairly obvious there is upcoming chaos and beastmen dlc. Might be they'll rework both at once since both factions have fairly similar mechanics and theme.

Very lackluster patch for anyone who doesn't buy the new dlc or own wood elves.

Aside from this, I think the general trend is that they want each DLC to have someone for WH2 races. I'm guessing it helps it sell better since players who only have WH2 and not WH1/Wood Elf DLC will pay to ensure that the WH2 race they have is "complete".
