Are there any really good untranslated SRPGs? Not asking for FFT level but at least something close - good story, decent AI, interesting combat system etc.

Good choice. Never played it myself, but I've played the prequel. It's basically a Fire Emblem game (has a lot in common, even has the same creator) with a few more strategy elements.

It would be nice to get a translation of that.

Personally I kind of want a re-do of all the translations of the jp-only Fire Emblem games, they're all unfinished and buggy. But I can understand if nobody wants to put in the effort for something already translated.

So I know Ultima got "Dragon Quest'd" for the NES version but I have no idea why someone would do that to Magic Candle and not even remotely follow the plot or use the lore or anything

It's apparently an SNES SRPG like FEDA and Fire Emblem but based around mechas.
