Mario kart, Super smash bros, Super mario world, Zelda ocarina of time and majora's mask... I agree 64 is overrated but those games are awesome.

Still think the PlayStation was somewhat overrated too. Shitty controller that kept the same design for nearly 20 years. Extremely slow CD-ROM. Terrible 3D graphics. Lots of games but not that many truly great ones.

I wouldn't call PS1 overrated, too many great games but what I think it's truly overrated it's a distance between PS1 and Saturn. The latter had similar choice of multiplatform games and lots of high quality exclusive but Sega was bro for PC gamers and released most of them for computers (Virtua Fighter 1/2, Sonic R, Last Bronx, House of the Dead, Virtua Cop 1/2, Sega Really etc.) while Sony kept them only on their platform (oh how I envied Tekken!). Plus Saturn (even without the xtram RAM add-on) was a true 2D powerhouse, a pity devs didn't focus on dwo-dimensional goodness (but this also fits Jaguar's case).

Anyway PSX>=Saturn>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>N64.

Thanks, I don't care about the modern anime artstyle either, and it was my impression that that was all it was on the system, with countless monster hunter clones. But I'll check those titles out on ppsspp!

Casuals treat it like hot shit, despite eventually placing third in the generation's console race thanks to a late come back from the PS3. It had very few exclusives worth playing and even fewer of these have stayed exclusive

Underrated: GCN
It had a lack of third party support, but what games it did get were generally pretty good. It was cheap and durable.

I thought it was commonly agreed that the N64 was a shit show. Expensive, bad contoller, cartridges, and even though the games were expensive the majority of them were horrible shovelware.

As a collector's console the upshot is the durability of the media.

Dreamcast too, sounds like a broken vacuum cleaner, bad contoller, no games. Seems like a correctly rated console to me.

Mattel Electronics' Intellivision is also highly underrated. Stupid Atari 2600 hogged all the glory.

Best console for me, in terms of how it revolutionized gaming, was the NES, my parents bought me one at launch, and it blew my mind as a kid, the diversity in games, genres, gameplay in such low powered hardware, plus it was fucking indestructible.
And many of the best NES games are still great fun to this day, like the Mega Man games, Contra/Probotector, Batman, DuckTales, Super Mario games, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Bionic Commando, River City Ransom, etc, etc. (those wondering about omissions, I listed the games I personally played back in those blessed days of early 90's)

Not to mention NES had some of the most rad game soundtracks of all time:

Though I have to say either the controller wasn't actually that ergonomic, being made in the age when the dinosaurs still roamed the earth, or my hands have gotten just way too big for it with age.

In the 360's defense, the cross-platform titles usually had their best version on it.

PSP - lot of people yapping "PSP haz no games" (parroting "PS3haz no games" memo) but it got massive amount of turn based titles, while on PC they were scarce. Still remember when I got my first kickstarted title (Wasteland2) and returned to PSP library of turn-based games after 5h of experiencing this shit...

I personally found the PSP pretty overrated in some circles. People hype the incredible amount of great games on the console, but most are pretty... meh. Loads of tactical rpgs (Most of which were either ports, "enhanced" ports or just plain mediocre), JRPGS (Pretty much just ports or awful spinoffs... again.), kinda cool-but-actually-terrible spinoffs like GTA games and MGS games. And subpar sequels to good games, like VC2/VC3. It's pretty good as emulation device, but I kinda stopped caring about 5th gen and previous emulation decade ago.

Honestly yeah, the normal DS too. A bazilion of mediocre JRPG.

The Nabu Network - Underrated and Unknown

telidon_nabu.jpg

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NABU_Network

The NABU Network was an early home computer system which was linked to a precursor of the Internet, operating over cable TV. It operated from 1982 to 1985, primarily in Ottawa, Canada. Its functionality was then revolutionary, though it was not a commercial success. It has been called "The Internet — 10 years ahead of its time" [1] (even though elements of the history of the internet predate it).

We had one of these from 1982 to 1985. It delivered content to a set top box over the cable network. It offered speadsheets, word processors, banking software and GREAT games. The library was literally updated over night and you could log in the next morning to review system change logs and see what new exciting shit was being delivered.

The games ranged from text adventures to graphics that rivaled anything available at the time. I played Hyper Olympics clones, Gologo 13 games, murder mystery shit, action games, etc. Very exciting stuff.

The set top box was the size of an Atari or Coleco console. It featured a keyboard, two joysticks, and had optional printer and local storage. It was at least 15 years ahead of its time.

They even had leaderboards for high scores. My dad was the city DigDug Champion. He played one game for 18 hours straight lol.

Vectrex

The Vectrex was pretty cool at the time. Quite different and portable. Fucking portable console/tv combo.

Cool, smooth vector graphics, decent sound and there wre some great games.

Now, when next-gen arrived, I must add PS4.

Absolute lack of identity, most of its exclusives are just cinematic popamole so it's like Bloodborne and Spider-Man machine, not worth all the praise it has received. Even tech-wise PS4 Pro is way below Xbone X.

There are great exclusives to PS4 but they're undeserved. Atlus gamds like 13 Sentinels and Persona 5 come to mind. Sony doesn't sign exclutivity for Atlus I as far as I know, Atlus are just Sony fanboys. It also recieved exclusive versions of doujin titles.

I will agree the console kind of sucks though.

These games are not PS4 exclusive - Persona 5 has PS3 (and thanks to that - is easily emulated on PC) and 13S was released on Vita too.
No, but Persona 5 runs a lot better on PS4 and 13S was not localized on Vita.
Doesn't Persona 5 emulated on the ps3 emulator run better than P5 on a ps4 though? Wow that was a lot of Ps.

I'm having a hard time thinking of a truly underrated console I've played that wasn't just dogshit. Gamegear was pretty bad aside from a couple of good titles. Columns was a fun time waster and I liked Triple Trouble but the system just ate through batteries and wasn't worth the price. I actually liked the Sega CD quite a bit but I don't know if I'm ready to say that console was underrated.

Now overrated? That's really easy for me. Probably a toss up between the 360, PS4 and Nintendo 64. I really do like Ogre Battle 64 though...

PS4 is overrated as fuck, and looking back on it, a huge waste of money on my part as well. Sure there are a few (Sony) exclusives on it that I enjoyed (Bloodborne, Persona 5, God of War, Odin Sphere remake, Shadow of the Beast remake, and, well, that was about it) but the main reason I got it was for the JP games like Yakuza, Atelier etc., you get the picture, but then midway in the PS4s life all those games started getting released for the PC. Even Sony exclusives that I enjoyed like Horizon Zero Dawn got a PC release, which would've been the superior way of playing that game since it was a pain in the ass to play with a controller. Sure, this is a bit of a hindsight thing, but looking back at the PS4, it wasn't that great of a console. The hardware was a disgrace, too. Its flagship title, Bloodborne, has embarrassingly bad performance on it.

I believe while it would run better, the texture quality is just gonna be innately worse.

However, after the success of Persona 4 Golden on steam I doubt Atlus can pretend that PC isn't worth it anymore. I'm sure Sega is bothering them about it.

I honestly hate the PS4. It sold so well (almost as much as the amazing PS2) but the base console is useless for most of its games, the cooling system was dogshit and prone to failure, the controller felt cheap, the UI is horrendous and it has no backwards compatibility.

The PSP and its arcade racers was what got me into videogames again. Don't just emulate it, get a used one cheap with lots of games, sit back and enjoy. Honestly, I think portable consoles in general are underrated by people whose only familiarity with them is through emulation. The PSP, in particular, has a lot of variety, was very powerful for the time and is generally overlooked compared to the Nintendo consoles, whose only strength are JRPGs and the occasional old-school port, IMO.

The Dreamcast is underrated among Sega consoles, sure. The Xbox is basically Dreamcast 2, with lots of superior multi-console alternatives to the PS2. The crystal version is sexy as hell and should've been the main model.

I'm not sure about overrated. I thought the PS3 was overrated until I bought one with a bunch of games. A decline in relation to the PS2, but still plenty of fun to be had (Valkyria Chronicles, Kingdom of Amalur, Motorstorm series, Metal Gear HD collection, etc.).

It's hard to think of old consoles as overrated when you come from the perspective of the "retro gamer", who either emulates for free or collects for a fraction of the initial cost, with the benefit of highly curated, expert nerd advice. Then you realize that playing Tomb Raider on the N-Gage for a few minutes can be pretty fun, unlike the guy who bought the fucking thing full price years ago.

How can a console with the GoAT (Mario 64) be overrated? Also how many of you guys were not children with three friends in the 90s?
