I doubt a NYT best selling author like Hickman puts pen to paper without a six figure advance. More likely they've already paid him and are trying to recoup their losses.

TRACY: There are four basic classifications of creatures in Shroud of the Avatar which will likely translate into Underworld Ascendent:

1. Human: Sentient creatures occurring naturally.
2. Animals: Non-sentient creatures occuring naturally.
3. Fomorians: Sentient creatures shaped by magic.

Dark Elves would be classified as a type of Fomorian ... as might lizardmen.

Paul – Not sure if Tracy will be writing any in-game lore at this point. Focus is on his writing the novel, which our design team will then adopt elements from and riff on.

One of the things I loved about the ultima series and the underworld titles in particular is the way the game manuals, hint books etc. were all written from the perspective of a character in fiction and this overlapped with journals and notes and other musing of theirs in the game proper. Any chance we will be seeing a return to this style of total lore immersion?

PAUL – We enjoyed writing from this perspective as well. I’m sure we’ll do some of this with the Underworld Ascendant materials that come in the box.

PAUL – Actually looking forward to creating new canon to replace the Ultima canon. It was fun to work with at the time, but looking at going in some new directions now. Besides, the Underworlds only lightly used the existing Ultima fiction, so not a lot to replace.

PAUL – Having a rich backstory to pull from is not at odds with open-world gameplay. While the novel Tracy is writing will be linear itself, we can borrow from this material in lots of ways and plug into the game without the game itself becoming linear in any way. Also, Tracy’s novel is going to be set a generation or several before when the player enters the Abyss, so it is literally back story.

Um ... you don't understand how Kickstarter works then, dude. Rethink this.

They are funded. They keep every cent pledged from now on. Paying themselves in order to be able to pay Hickman doesn't make sense. :Flash: is correct ... if they get within $1 of the stretch goal but don't hit it, then they don't have to pay Hickman. The only reason they would illegally put in their own money at this point would be to make it look like they got more pledges.

I don't know if this illegal. But they gain nor lose (besides 10% or so) something, from putting their own money into their own kickstarter. Also too say is, that they will go beyond the 750k so there is nothing to talk about. And about everything else, you are quite correct Zombra.

No, you do not understand. 699,999.99 Hickman does not get paid.

If I am him (or his crony, like Richard). I (hicman) or RG kick in 10K (or whatever amount) so it makes the stretch goal. So I am guaranteed to at least make some cash for a throw-away "novel". I don't know what the actual "spread" is but I doubt Otherside promised him the whole 50K for making the stretch goal. And defiantly they are not paying him "6 figures" for a 50K goal like the other knuckle head up there /\ said.

Creator Tom Hall admits in comments linked above to placing several $10,000 'mega bids' 'for fun' on his failing/failed project. This should not be allowed. The total shown from REAL backers is false by almost 50%!

Naturally a developer can cheat at Kickstarter, but i don't think that this is here a problem. Tim and the rest of the team can pull it off, but there are some things that need explaining, like: Why is Will Teixeira making kickstarter with a cat simulator? The other thing that bothers me is Garriott or did Lord British completely turned to the dark side? How much is he involved in the project?
