Midnight Protocol is a tactical narrative-driven RPG with unique keyboard-only controls
I tried the demo, and the concept certainly seems to be unique - it's kinda like playing a dungeon crawler where the dungeon only has traps, but different kinds of them and different ways to evade and/or disarm them. The main challenge seems to be in picking the right loadout for the mission and, within the mission itself, managing three kinds of resources - action points, processing power, and system trace. The demo part is only the tutorial though, which is extremely easy and hand-holdy, so it remains to be seen how interesting actual maps are.
The RPG part seems to be limited to earning three kinds of reputation (white, black or grey hat) depending on what missions you take and which choices you make inside them, which in turn unlock different types of programs you can equip (defensive, offensive and utility respectively). So purists might not find it enough of an RPG to their liking.
The keyboard-only gimmick is more annoying than interesting though. Like, I get typing in the commands in the adventuring maps is supposed to sort of simulate "actual" (as in, the way it's imagined in Hollywood movies) hacking process. And I guess it does add some excitement in real-time mode. But why does the game has me mash random keys to reply to emails, given that the text is predetermined anyway, is very pointless (you can circumvent it by pressing Tab, but why have this "mechanic" in the first place?).
