I suppose this is the opposite of Twig's thread. Post old games that aged remarkably well.

This always brings me back to Resident Evil Remake and Silent Hill 3.

It is downright stupid how good those games look considering their time. If you take a look at other games from 2002 and 2003 the difference is staggering. They are the culmination of technical wizardry and artistic brilliance.

Eh, I don't think RE1's visuals aged especially well, thanks to the developers not keeping the original images neatly catalogued somewhere. It's like a film studio transferring their movie to DVD and then burning the original negatives.

REmake 1 looks better than RE4 despite being 3 years older, agreed.
It was a typo. I meant RE1 (remake). I'm just used to saying RE4 more lately, partly because of the remake. You may remove your Agree now.

The only part of REmake that didn't age particularly well was the underground place with the zombie shark. For whatever reason that one area stands out like a sore thumb. It's jarring.

Ok, so you're a fucking moron, and possibly blind. Not sure if I can trust your opinions on film restoration now.

Final Fantasy IX has the same problem. High res art downscaled, game not looking as good as it could have on later hardware because they didn't have a good system in place for the future.

Lol, funny that people are bringing up Marathon now after the recent announcement. Before that I rarely ever seen anybody talk about those games. They would only appear in conversations about Halo. Those games were pretty much forgotten.

99% of 2d sprite games lol

There is something about Arx Fatalis' visual style that makes it age very slow compared to other 3d games of the period. A lot of the retro hipster devs of today should take notes when they try to recreate "oldschool" graphics for their projects.

Announcement of Marathon
Dis. It's cool if you like those games but they don't even qualify as cult classics. They were literally forgotten.

I doubt anyone cares if they're cult classics or forgotten or this or that. I've heard about them years ago, the convo could've been about Halo, doom clones, or gayming on mac. I always took them as games people have heard about but never played, as that was usually the case when I bring it up.

The only place I ever found discussion about Marathon was on the Codex looking it up online, from several years ago, from what I saw a lot of development on the source ports came from Bungie re-releasing it with Halo. I don't really like Halo and Marathon is a clusterfuck mac fps but playable with a map.

Usually when I see discussion of an older product and they want to re-release it I just think of manipulative marketing, there is a chance people remember it but companies can always just produce more marketing to pretend there was already a market in the first place for it.

Those baguettes know their visuals. Arx's style looks like a triple-A french comic book. The kind that takes 3 years to make one chapter and ends up compiling them all in a 300 page album.
