Always was a fan of the Id Tech Engine and Unreal Engine.

Unreal Engine 2.
that shit is fire. the first one especially
It's a really good looking game, but Unreal 2 failed in many ways at being a worthy successor to the seminal Unreal 1.
Unreal Engine 2 was also used to great effect in Thief: Deadly Shadows.

1989, beautiful game.

1990. Great animation and the gameplay is amazing too, amazing and unique control method.

Since we're not confined to 3D art - Westwood Studios during their prime (1990-1994).

Eye of the Beholder 1-2
Legend of Kyrandia 1-2
Lands of Lore
Dune 2

I'm not gonna post screenshots (for now) - people should just know.

The art direction and atmosphere of Eye of the Beholder 2 is phenomenal.

holy shit dude that kickboxing game is so crisp

did they use rotoscoping?

I think just animation. You could sometimes kick the other guy out of the ring, it was incredible for the time. Really fun to play too, you build your own fighter and choose all their moves from a big list. Total masterpiece. The control method they used was genius too, and unique. Never seen it used again and it was a great idea.

The one, the only:

I still play it occasionally these days and prefer these graphics to the 'updated' RCT3 ones.

I also found the original Wipeout visuals very striking at the time, but I'm not sure how well they've held up.

Unreal Engine 2 was also used to great effect in Thief: Deadly Shadows.

Despite the great lighting and atmosphere, the game had its problems. The ridiculous ragdolling:

The lack of attention to NPC animations, models and textures - all three look unfinished, beta.

That one uses upscaled textures but the problem with the original art direction is still visible. All NPCs move and look like dead eyed dolls. The game also has some kind of internal resolution problem that results in jagged edges on (world) models despite heavy forced AA and native resolutions used (via patching).

Cherry picked of course, but I can still hear the music that plays when you pass through the portal.
