Pirates of Belerion: Announcement & Release Date
Greetings Mercenaries!

Wartales has been out for several months now, and we're thrilled to see that you're enjoying the game as much as we've enjoyed shaping it (with you) over the last couple of years. Today, we're delighted to announce that Wartales will set sail for the Belerion archipelago on December 14th!

Belerion is a massive region, far superior in size to any other part of the continent. And one of the reasons for that is to provide a large enough playground for you to experience a new, game-changing means of travel: seafaring!

But that’s not all, two Steam articles, “The art of Navigation” & “Lords of the Sea”, will cover the main features & content unique to the new region. We’ve also planned two live streams, in the first one we’ll discuss the previous articles & answer any questions you might have. The final live stream will be on release day, during which game director Quentin will showcase some gameplay.

Pirates of Belerion: The Art of Navigation

Greetings Mercenaries!

When we started working on Wartales, navigation was something we had in mind and wanted to bring to the game. However, we chose to focus on the fundamental foundations of the game: mercenary work, the camp and exploration, leading to rich and varied systems. This flexible yet solid base has enabled us to consolidate the Wartales universe and its very identity!

Designing a navigation system was always going to be an exhilarating and challenging task! It's very much linked to the concept of freedom, exploration and a surprising desire for wild plundering. We wanted to give you the feeling that you could set off on a maritime adventure with your companions, with your own upgradable boat, and that the waves would gently rock said ship. Pirates, storms and sea creatures, but also duels, fishing and ballistas are all part of the equation! We've distilled the best possible vintage of what sailing in Wartales would be like, and are now ready to present it to you!

0e1d9ba1fb99bb21ce7f973802a806acf89474f7.jpg

A sailor’s best ally is the wind. Each area has its specific wind conditions, and you will be able to map them all. Enabling you to always pick the fastest route and use the winds at your advantage. Beware, though: in case of a tempest, their directions may vary. You’ll probably want to adapt your gear so that your ship is more versatile. And if that’s not enough, you’ll be able to maintain your speed by rowing.

Sailing will allow you to explore the seas and set foot on remote islands. You’ll be able to disembark on any littoral with an accessible beach. Have you discovered uncharted territory? Are you visiting one of the bustling stops on the merchants’ trade route? Or have you just trespassed on smugglers’ territory ? You should always stay vigilant, for the territory of Belerion is vast and full of surprises…

665ef37d9ce528560f712ec18d61a8054031a17d.jpg

It is also filled with pirates. And although sailing is enjoyable in itself, you’re not here for the fun of it, soon you’ll have to defend yourselves. For this purpose, there’s one special tool you’ll be able to use: the ballista, which can help you weaken rival ships, and who knows what else.

Sailing is already a lot faster than running, but we wanted to give you more. As you progress in Belerion’s setting, take down rivals and find treasures (more info on this in the next article :) ), you’ll be able to significantly improve your vessel.
First, you’ll learn how to craft new parts to upgrade your ship. It’s composed of several components, and each of them can be upgraded. Better yet, each component comes in different shapes, and you can choose which one suits you the most depending on the playstyle you prefer. For example, changing the shape of your sails will change the types of winds that will help your ship reach its maximum speed.

6912bf69a36a792835beb3a12e20754cd40eecca.jpg

In addition to material upgrades, you’ll also learn special sailing abilities. Most of these are secret techniques invented by famous Sea Lords, and it is by defeating these lords of the sea that you’ll put your hands on their well-kept knowledge. Some of these abilities will help you sail faster or more safely, while others will give you specific bonuses while fighting at sea.

4ab5a7f08236eb29b400f8a8e71027acba81bcfd.jpg

Another way to master the art of navigation is to assign companions to different roles on your ship. Obviously, you’ll need a pilot, but an artilleryman and watchman are also essential components of a crew. A drummer could also help keep your oarsmen motivated and synchronized. Finally, a fisherman can be assigned and will cast nets in the ocean to catch exotic fish for your troop.

Now that you have your crew ready, your boat prepared, your ballista loaded, your abilities mastered and wind in your sails, there’s nothing stopping you from exploring the many islands of Belerion, uncharted or not, and discovering the many treasures that await you in this new territory.

Pirates of Belerion: Lords of the Sea

Greetings Mercenaries!

We wanted captains to be recognized and feared throughout the archipelago, and for the player to be able to do the same. From idea to idea, we sought to link this ambition to a unique and thematically strong progression system. What could be better than a competitive ranking of all the archipelagos greatest captains, whether pirates, merchants or members of the Guard? A ranking of rivals who swear by the number of raids they've carried out or the number of ships they've boarded? We decided that you could compete in this race for notoriety, and would have to build up your reputation to take on these rivals one by one, eliminating them in a special duel, taking their unique loot and taking their place on the leaderboard!

0ca7c2ea30b50fd363b4953d23791d8e219933d3.jpg

Of course, this struggle will be highly compensated. First, by defeating a rival, you’ll put your hands on the unique gear that made them so powerful. But you’ll also find maps leading to their treasures. Each rival has one, and finding all of them will make you the most reputable crew in the entire region.

There is no shame in boarding one’s boat, slaying their crew and pillaging their treasures. But one thing we won’t allow ourselves to do is refuse a captain a proper duel: accordingly, if you want to take down a rival in combat, you’ll have to challenge them (and win). Dueling is a new gameplay feature specific to Belerion’s fights at sea. And each new rival has a special strategy you’ll have to adapt to.

4055c1913f6cb30512cdda28086ba2af25dbb51c.jpg

But there is more to offshore fighting than duels. Many of your ship’s features can be used at either party’s advantage. But unsurprisingly, the main difference with a regular terrestrial fight will be the water. Any warrior that’s pushed overboard will hang on until a companion rescues them or an enemy precipitates their death. And obviously, while they’re hanging, they cannot fight.

There are many ways to push someone at sea but two of them are new. First, you can use your ballista (or your rival’s ballista) and inflict deadly blows to anyone imprudent enough to enter its firing line. But more importantly, you can use the many ropes attached to your deck to board your rival’s vessel in style, disappearing in the air before crashing down on your enemies. Sounds fun? It is! The downside is that your enemies can do that too.

de8a46522ae847fdad864d16da17d6d533c2947e.jpg

Enemies! Let’s talk about them. In addition to the local fauna, there will be two new factions to fight in Belerion: the local peacekeepers, and the pirates. After years of ongoing conflict, the two clans have developed opposite strategies. While pirates will do anything possible to keep you close and restrain your movements, Belerian fighters will never let you catch them, and they’ll push you around the battlemap with remarkable ease.

ef9ac3f0fe422fea691444e71ead3d94f82e5717.jpg

What they have in common, though, is a new type of fighter: the pugilist. This new class will be brought to everyone in a free update. Its main characteristic will be the presence of two separate stances: attack and defense. The pugilist will be able to switch between the two at any time, changing the effects of its skills. This will allow for uniquely versatile strategies and builds, making the pugilist an invaluable addition to any kind of troop…

Wartales: Pirates of Belerion - out now!

Attention mercenaries!

We’re thrilled to announce that Pirates of Belerion is now available for purchase! We’ve prepared a brief overview of both the DLC and the changes that the free update brings to the base game.

As the year comes to an end we’d like to take the opportunity to thank you for your support. At the time of writing this Wartales is almost at a whopping 20,000 reviews with over 90% of them being positive! You can vote for Wartales in the Steam Awards if you feel like it :)

The team here at Shiro Games will be taking a break over the winter holidays, to rest and recharge our batteries, so as to hit the ground running next year. We’ll make sure to share our plans for 2024 as soon as possible, most likely in the form of a roadmap.

DLC overview
Sailing the seas
You now have a whole new region to discover, and it is larger than any territory your troop has ever set foot on. Luckily, with this opportunity for exploration comes a new and faster means of transportation: sailing.

4ab5a7f08236eb29b400f8a8e71027acba81bcfd.jpg

Harnessing the power of the winds, you’ll travel from island to island and navigate across the reefs to find abandoned treasures. Assign a captain, a gunner, a lookout, a fisherman, a drummer to motivate your crew, and set sail for uncharted lands. As you progress through the region and discover its riches, you’ll also be able to upgrade and customize your ship, preparing it (and your crew) for the dangerous encounters that await you.

The art of Navigation

Making a name for your troop
Belerion is a dangerous place, where you will cross swords with two new enemy factions: the Pirates, and the Belerian Guard. Both of them are experts when it comes to fighting at sea: they’ll push your companions overboard, use ropes to jump on your deck, and set your ship on fire with ignited projectiles. The good news is: you can too.

0ca7c2ea30b50fd363b4953d23791d8e219933d3.jpg

In the Belerion archipelago, each battle you win and each feat you accomplish will increase your Reputation. As you get into the limelight, you’ll catch the attention of the region’s most dreaded sailors: the Lords of the Seas. This means that bloodthirsty rascals will be after you. But it also means you’ll be able to defeat them, find their treasures, and make your way to the top, ultimately becoming Belerion’s most glorious crew.

Lords of the Seas

Broadening your horizons
Belerion introduces its own storyline, complete with a new Arena, Elite, Ruin, regional Rouste, new animals, ressources, recipes and equipment.

Free update overview
New class
We’re introducing the pugilist as Wartales’ seventh unit class. Its main characteristic is its ability to switch between offensive and defensive stances. This means the pugilist not only has an entirely new skillset: each of its skills has two separate effects depending on the unit’s stance. This will allow for unmatched versatility and unpredictability. But don’t let this depth fool you into thinking that the pugilist is a “delicate” unit: it’s a very brutal one.
The pugilist has its own weapon type, perfect for close combat. Of course, you’ll be able to craft some of these weapons, but you’ll also find many different ones on your enemies. New pugilist units can be found in both of the new factions introduced in Belerion, as well as in the regional Arena. But you will also find different pugilists among the ranks of the Trackers, Companions, Bandits and Deserters.

New customization
The possibilities for how a character can look in Wartales have been significantly expanded. Several new features can now be found on NPCs, but they can also be used in character creation:
  • New faces
  • New skin tones
  • New hairstyles
  • New facial hair

New Rewards
These new troop titles can now be earned by completing the Hard Modes of previous Arenas or Roustes. Hard Mode can be accessed after you have already completed the challenge at least once.
  • Vertruse Arena: Poison Masters (+1 poison damage)
  • Arthes Arena: Status Masters (+1 DMG per malus on the unit)
  • Bernna Arena: Masters of Synergies (+5 damage when supported)
  • Hoevendorp Arena: Masters of Flames (+1 burning damage)
  • Ludern Arena: Beastmasters (+5 damage resistance for animals)
  • Drombach Arena: Masters of Mists (+1 DMG per bonus on the unit)
  • Arena of Legends: Undisputed Masters (+2 damage)
  • Grinmeer Rouste: Traditional Athletes (+1 willpower)
  • Tiltren Rouste: Synchronised Athletes (+5 damage resistance when supported)
  • Arthes Rouste: Agile Athletes (+1 movement if the unit was hit this round)
  • Vertruse Rouste: Versatile Athletes (+1 DMG per enemy hit this round by the unit)
  • Ludern Rouste: Beastly Athletes (+5 DMG for animals)
  • Drombach Rouste: Lethal Athletes (+5 DMG if the unit was hit this round)

Other additions and changes
  • The level cap has been increased to 13. The overall stats and experience requirements have been slightly scaled down.
  • New pugilist units have been added to the Trackers, Companions, Outlaws and Deserters factions.
  • Two new oils have been added in Gosenberg and Vertruse.
  • A new food recipe has been added in Vertruse.
  • Lavender can now be found in Gosenberg and Vertruse.
  • Resin can now be found in woodstacks and wood gathers.

is there an option to adjust the ratio of womenfolk? I refunded the basegame because there were only 2/3 women in the game and simply not enough princesslike and karenlike voices. The ratio should be at least 4:1

Hi all,

I was interested in this game and I was wondering if it is worth playing it (for me) or not.

Since several of you have already played the game, can you tell me if it is more combat/dialogues/exploration/survival oriented?!

Any importance to C&C not only in completing the quests but also in interacting with people and the world?

Thank you

95% combat, with some time spent keeping your team fed and paid (by killing things). When you talk to people, it's to find more things to kill.

importance to C&C
Sort of. The game has 6 regions, each region has a conflict and you can pick one side or the other. It doesn't affect anything in other regions though, or really much at all that I could tell. You might get one or another slightly different reward at the end.

The problem with this game is the combats get very long, are never hard, and are not rewarding. I can forgive one or even two of these flaws, but not all three. Fights are faster in the beginning and upgrades are more frequent then, but from the midgame onward it becomes a boring, easy slog.

I would say that is definitely not my cup of tea. I can understand a lot of combat if put in an interesting framework, like Underrail does.

Never was. It's an alternative for people who find BB too punishing and don't like procedural shit. I enjoy it for what it is though, the game is addictive and some questlines are fun.

Yep unfortunately have to agree with you. However it has become even more financially successful than BB, which means games coming out are going to emulate this formula and not BB...

They need to give you your own keep as kind of base of operations instead of a Tavern.. they should let you become like a mercenary general.

https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1527950/view/7571188824230135611

Features
The tavern is an establishment managed by your troop. It allows you to earn krowns, discover new cooking and brewing recipes, obtain some unique and powerful dishes on a daily basis, help your companions gain job experience, and increase the number of bounties you can accept simultaneously. It also provides exclusive rewards.
  • The tavern can be accessed at any time from your camp, regardless of the troop’s location.
  • Its progression and benefits are calculated after each rest.
  • The tavern will grow alongside your troop, through daily improvements and fine-tuning.
  • The content & features are best enjoyed as an addition to your routine.

This DLC is designed to be played both with your current playthrough as well as a new one. Although a long-term commitment will be rewarded, it is also possible to visit the tavern less frequently, or to focus solely on it if you’re already in late game.

Housing

d123522913c48fd36422a00c8edbdda3e770422a.jpg

  • Just like in the camp, you can arrange tools & furniture on the tavern’s floor, as well as hang decorations on the walls.
  • As your tavern gets more clients and manages to keep them satisfied, you will earn prestige. And having sufficient prestige will allow you to unlock new tools for your tavern and the ability to upgrade them.
  • You’ll even have the opportunity to move to a bigger tavern. Twice. Going from a humble shed in Tiltren to a huge establishment in Gosenberg.
  • Each of these taverns can be customized, with several types of walls and floor that can be adapted separately. You can also change the color of your tavern’s draperies.
  • Finally, some special events will allow you to unlock exclusive equipment, furniture & decorations.

Staffing

e410747a2ebfb939fec6f3a118fa8fe11870cd5a.jpg

  • You can either transfer companions from your troop to the tavern or recruit civilians. These two options can be combined or used exclusively depending on your preference.
  • The tavern relies on a variety of workers:
    • The Tavern Keeper is the obvious one. You can’t welcome any patrons if you don’t have a Tavern Keeper.
    • Cooks are assigned to the stove to produce food. Some recipes can be sent to the troop daily
    • Brewers are assigned to barrels in the cellar to produce and age alcohol.
    • Bards increase comfort, sales odds and prestige by performing in your tavern.
    • Bouncers maintain security. You’ll need more of them as the number of clients increases.
    • Thieves can blend in amongst clients and help generate profits, but they’ll decrease your security in the process.
  • For Cooks, Brewers, Bards and Thieves, performance and salary are determined by the worker’s level. But don’t worry about preparing your companions before assigning them: working in the tavern grants experience.
  • In your tavern, each unit has base traits depending on their stats, and acquired traits that will add up as they keep working.

Customers & Factions

b75acc784a7d4298269907a6cb5d2a25b124d9a4.jpg

  • 14 different factions can visit your tavern if you know how to entice them. Each one has its own requirements, which must be met before they set foot in your establishment.
  • They also have preferences: food, drinks, music and decoration determine the proportion of each faction in your tavern.
  • If you manage to attract 100 clients from a faction, they’ll reward you with a special tool that can be used in your tavern.
  • But attracting clients is not enough: they must buy something if you don’t want to go bankrupt. This is why matching your menu with your clients’ preferences will be key to making a profit.
  • Depending on your decoration and staffing choices, your customer base can also vary between working-class and upscale. A working-class customer base can accept a less strict security, while an upscale customer base can accept higher prices.

Rivals & Infiltration

95fbc3fa6cc7b0a75c8981c6cc0f6599a1ee6981.jpg

  • All the taverns in the continent have a prestige score which determines their place in the Tavern’s ranking.
  • As you get higher in this ranking, you will be rewarded with stars from the Taverners’ Guild. Each star is accompanied by an exclusive gift.
  • You can send your workers to infiltrate rival taverns. Depending on their role, their missions will vary:
    • Cooks and Brewers steal your rivals’ secret recipes. Once a recipe has been stolen, an infiltrated Cook or Brewer will simply attract more clients.
    • Bards bring more prestige to your tavern.
    • Bouncers cause fights that decrease your rivals’ prestige.
    • Thieves steal money from your rivals’ clients.

Cooking

5f58c281d4813b10350cc470155dac1b98f177ae.jpg

  • Depending on the tavern’s level, an increasing number of scullions can work together on the stove, and each of them can cook several dishes. You can manually set the price of everything on your menu.
  • Depending on their job level and traits, each cook can be assigned a number of different recipes, and the quantity they’re able to produce will increase.
  • But they’ll only prepare the food if there’s someone to buy it! Sales odds depend on many factors, including your clients’ preferences, satisfaction, and the item’s pricing.
  • No need to worry about providing each ingredient separately. You’ll be able to get everything from the Supplier. But their prices may vary: each week, there will be discounts and shortages on a selection of resources.

  • These exclusive recipes can only be unlocked and prepared in the tavern. They are a tavern’s trademark.
  • When a speciality is on your menu, 1 serving will be sent from the tavern to the troop daily, granting powerful combat bonuses.

Seasonings
  • Seasonings can now be found in combat or looted.
  • You can bring these resources to your tavern to increase profits.

  • As you upgrade your tavern, you’ll be able to fit more and more barrels of increasing size into your cellar.
  • When a brewer is assigned to a barrel, they start filling it with alcohol, producing a certain quantity of it during each rest depending on their level and traits. A large variety of recipes can be unlocked as you progress through the new content. They have different values and brewing time, and appeal to different types of clients.
  • A barrel can also be stored in the stock and monitored by a brewer so that its content ages and becomes more valuable. This is a long-term, costly process, but it can become extremely lucrative.
  • Once again, all prices can be set manually, but being too greedy could hurt your bottom line!
