Star Wars Was KOTOR even worth a play?

Yeah but you gotta look at it in the context of the time. What other games of that era pulled off real-time/turn based combat better than Kotor. It's such a trick system thats bound to be janky even with today's tools.

Personally I prefer straight turn based and would love a Kotor game with combat similar to DOS2

KOTOR was too easy, even Dragon Age Origins with its terrible combat balance and lazy encounter design had WAYYYYYYYY better combat than KOTOR. A game like Baldur's Gate 2 had so much better combat than KOTOR that it's not funny.

Done with the game.

Absolute fucking garbage. I feel embarrassed for anyone who holds KOTOR 2 in high regard and is out of high school.
>Avellone's self insert
>Bitter, gay gnostic woman
>Sawyer's self insert
>Genocidal Christian man
I never thought I'd say this but Sawyer > Avellone.

>gigachad oldschool devs self inserting like a boss
Based. Take me back.

Followed? There's no turn order here, the "turns" happen simultaneously, it's just that every action takes exactly 6 seconds.
Wasn't simultaneous combat a thing in older DnD?

One thing you can say about KoTOR is that you can queque actions. Something you couldn't do in Baldur's Gate. To be honest, I can say with certainty that KoTOR would've worked better as an isometric game. But they needed for it to be playable on consoles, which is why we got third person sort-of action game (with the ability to swap between characters).

I enjoyed both games. Kotor 1 is fun and achieves what it sets out to do pretty well. The writing is above par for the time and the combat is serviceable if you have buy-in for the real-time/turn-based system. Characters are decent and the dialogue exceeds that of the films, even if the voice-acting is questionable.
Questionable statement. The writing is good for a few characters (HK-47 and Canderous Ordo being at the top), the rest was barely tolerable and the plot is so flat I simply refuse to play KoTOR 1 again for that reason alone (also, I saw the "plot twist" coming from from a mile away).

In terms of writing and plot structure it is better to go straight to KoTOR 2. It is basically the same game mechanically, only with much better plot and more characters who are also more interestingly written.

Kotor 1 should be played a little bit at least. There are some people of a generation whose first console was an xbox, for them it's babby's first RPG and 10/10 classic. You need to know what their talking about, so you can laugh an appropriate amount in their face.

That would be phase based, similar to how Wizardry does it, where everyone declares their turn actions at the same time, but then they play out in sequence based on initiative. The characters with higher initiatives roll the dice first. That's still different from RTwP.

I can't believe we're having the "RTwP is just, like, turn based in real time, man" on the Codex in 2024.
Newfags don't even know the basics anymore smh

Frankly, I would love more games playing like Combat Mission or Frozen Synapse, including the RPGs. But failing that the real-time with pause is next best thing after turn-based, so I don't mind it that much. It's the games that are supposed to be strategical/tactical, yet having the full-on real-time (with no pause) that I found a truly cancerous idea these days (and I wouldn't be surprised if that's a big part of the reason why the RTS genere has died out).
