What is the worst CRPG?? Are Oblivion, DA:O and truly the dregs of the genre Or are there more vile creations out in the depths?

Use your own discretion in including/excluding JRPGS, popamole etc. whatnot..

DISCUSS!! ;)

When it comes down to it, games like DA and Oblivion are closer to mediocre than terrible. They have good production value and certain redeeming elements. If you wanted to find something worse you most likely could.

Oblivion. I don't know what you can do to make a rpg even more worse. Never found a rpg were EVERY SINGLE game aspect is so badly designed, ruined often with just one single retarded decision.

The only positive thing about Oblivion is the editor, books and some armor. And these are things carried over from Morrowind.

Arcania is still worse.

Should historical context be taken into consideration?

I mean, the worst would probably be some half-finished Russian indie that noone has ever heard of, but it would be unfair to liken such a game to one of the large blockbusters that have dragged the entire genre in the wrong direction.

you wouldn't care to venture what is terrible?
Would you rather play an indie or AAA release with very little redeemable elements?

I guess that is how you interpret the question... or rephrased slightly those big blockbusters are certainly the worst for crpgs

Probably some Russian shovelware. GoldenLand, Metalheart and BorderZone come to mind. Especially BorderZone. Then again, I hear Chinese indies can be spectacularly awful, so one of them could just one up the crap our market managed to give birth to.

So is it inert or active? Make up your fucking mind.
:x

Anyway, without atrocious level scaling Oblivion would just be mediocre albeit almost painfully so.
The thing is that there is massive contrast between, hype, critical reception and user reception, and the quality of the game itself.

It's one thing when you get mugged when you're wandering around some seedy part of town, but if you go to an allegedly prestigious restaurant everyone keeps talking about, and find yourself in a bare concrete room smeared with feces, where a gang of dirty degenerate ruffians proceed to inflict unpleasantries on you using both melee, HtH AND cocks, then it's just :retarded: .

Torment: Tides of Numenera
Oblivion, for having horrible gameplay* and writing, dialogue minigame, being loved by LARPers all over the world and plaguing the game industry with the new buzzword ''immersion''.

Mass Effect, for having horrible gameplay, introducing popamole to RPG combat and dialogue wheel to RPG dialogue system, having an abysmal UI, being called RPG while not being RPG and plaguing the game industry with the buzzword ''cinematic''.

Alpha Protocol, for having horrible gameplay, following in the footsteps of Ass Effect for popamole and adding a touch of inanity to the already inane dialogue wheel and continuing the ''cinematic'' trend.

All three have in common that they offer next to nothing in terms of gameplay.

*combat, character system implementation, quests, levels, non-combat interaction, etc.

There are fucking masterpieces compared to ArcaniA, a complete rape of franchise, RPG genre, Action RPG genre, humankind, intelligent thought, your mom and the cosmos.

Planescape Torment. The stats in that game are completely arbitrary, combat is terribad, art direction is boring. The story is mediocre for an adventure game and the characters are mostly unremarkable, with only a few expectations. I really don't see what's with all the hype about this game, it's just an overblown adventure game with stats added on.

Deus Ex is a better RPG than Planescape Torment. And Dues Ex is a god damn FPS, so that speaks volumes about Torment.
