Dull-as-shit and too easy single-player campaign (with only one good cinematic, not counting the intro), uninspired unit design (either too powerful or completely fucking worthless). I still play Starcraft original if I want to do some multiplayer with my friends.
Alright, we are on different levels.
Fun-wise, it's a matter of taste.
But I play SC and WC as cybersport, and I can tell you that SC-original sucked hard, but BW really changed things and now it is the most balanced and sporty RTS in the world - FACT. (not because I say that, it's just a popular consensus among cybersportsmen)

My absolute favorite... Well, LOTR:BFME was pretty damn fun. I think I might have to go with Age of Empires 2, though. It's such a kickass game. Old, but kickass.

The patched version of Lords of Magic is very enjoyable too. But, I played Total Annihilation a lot.
I've tried it recently and it's rather nice, but there was something mentioned about custom hero characters to start with. I couldn't get that to work, am I missing something there?

You need the LOM Second Edition for that.
