Here's a nice link for you that will lead you to 6 similar threads, much more interesting than this one.

cRPG = dialogue trees + C&C.
There was a time when Fallout was called an RPG with adventure elements, there was a time when Torment was claimed to be an adventure-RPG mix, there was a time when Blade Runner was an adventure game. And finally there's a time when Stalker is an RPG because it has dialogues and side-quests and The Witcher is an RPG because it has dialogues, c&c and some lame excuse for stats.

Just to make the whole process quicker, let's just visually show what RPGs are, just to give a gist or an idea of it, rather than explain what they are.

Well JA and other tactical games do have quite a number of similarities with many cRPGs - the main one being party-based character skill/stat driven combat and character stat-skill system being exactly like something from RPGs, even having dice-rolls. JA2 even had keyword dialogue system that reminds of the one in Ultima 7 for example.

Still wouldn't call them RPGs though as the gameplay focus of aforementioned JAs (X-Coms, Silent Storms), is very different from what you see in goldbox games and later cRPGs (aka no questing/exploration/interaction with a world)

Don't click dicksucker's link. That's just his fucked up biased thread. Just use the search function and stop being such an alt.
The Codex either brings the worst out of everyone or attracts the worst of mankind.
So much butthurt.
Although I have no idea why you'd admit that to strangers on the internet, I'd suggest next time you simply tell your uncle:"No means no!"

Ah fuck. OK: Let's be sirius!
A game is an RPG when the developer or publisher prints: RPG (or equivalent) on the box (or equivalent).

What you really want to know: What makes a good RPG?

Wyrmlord summed things up nicely. Except he missed out on a Dungeon Master clone.
Sure but it seems to me that the number of Dungeon Master clones is greater than the number of RPGs which are NOT Dungeon Master clones.

It's a significantly large sub-genre, and a very distinct one.

Quite possibly.

By the way, did you ever play Drakkhen? I played it for a while on the Amiga back when it came out, but I never finished it. Very odd game.

What are you on about? This same topic has been done that much that even I almost had a brain embolism when seeing the title.

And why are you caring what some people on another forum think?

rpg should have:
1)exp (character development)
2)titties!!!(mature content)
3)choises
4)consekunses

3 out of 4 is enough

And he didn't have a single rogue-like. But otherwise, a pretty good starting point.
