What RPG had the best companions?

I don't find RPG companions all that well-written in most cases- though I'm also heartless asshole who struggles to relate to fictional characters.

I will give a shoutout to Mass Effect, not because they're good, but because the three-game arc of watching your companions grown and be subject to honest player choice is pretty novel. ME's the only series to date where I actually felt a tinge of connection with the stories of my PC's companions.

What is the weird crotch ball thing about?!?
Her crotch plate is present in other art although not as prominent:

This one is most likely MIUN, not MIEU.

I am seeing crotch guards on other female characters and enemy cyborgs as well, so it seems to be the art director's aesthetic. For example, Sari:

Mass Effect's companions only exist to stroke your charcter's ego and other things

The mercs in Jagged Alliance 2 are pretty cool. Despite JA2 having about 10 times as many party members as your average RPG, they have more memorable lines than most RPG companions, with a lot of attention to detail, e.g. if you order mercs to shoot a civilian, only the more bloodthirsty mercs will obey while the 'nice' mercs will refuse to do it.

Planescape: Torment has the most fun companion interaction, not just because of the writing, but the use of stat/skill checks, with each companion being able to teach you something unique, or you teaching/upgrading them. Companion interaction through dialogue trees is now a ubiquitous part of RPGs but it's mostly used for exposition or tacked on romances.
