. But the first Witcher was a great game, so I'm remaining optimistic about the sequel.

Be aware that quite a few of the people who worked on TW are not there anymore to work on TW2.

Where did they go?
It varies. Some are at Lionhead, some founded their own indie companies, I'm at Starbreeze, some went to People Can Fly, etc.

these guys are surely more annoying than even Bethsoft.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm

no

Well, since the Kkkodeks is my exclusive proxy and firewall against exposure to XXI century RPGs, 99% of Bethsoft spam is successfully blocked and never reaches me. But apparently the Kkkodeks is helpless against CDP spam and it gets through daily.

I wish I could simply adblock it.

It's even more badass if you say it as "Szczam na twoją szczeniacką pogardę".

I really should have played the game in Polish with English subtitles. :( Slavic languages are so... attractive.

I had hoped that CDProjekt's near-bankruptcy would cool them down a bit.

Alas.

The Big Publishing-consolification-design by comittee jggernaut rolls on. Even in Poland.

I liked the original Twitcher's story and setting and the fact that there are consequences to the choices Geralt makes, but not much else. Good writing was (probably) lost in translation. Quest design and encounter design were nothing to write home about. The worst aspects of the game were abysmal: dumbed down character system and horrible actiony twitchy combat.

Having Failout 3 as a role model probably means adding Bethesda level story and writing, and maybe guns, to an existing character system and combat, so that the game can suck on all fronts.

Great Slavic Languages? Yes. South Slavic Languages? Somewhat. West Slavic Languages? Ehhhhh....

Polish always sound like the speakers are in the middle of a heavy argument, regardless of situation. Not my favourite language in the world.

You do have to think about the fact that CDProjekt aren't as rich as Bethesda, don't have that much of a market in America and don't have so many raging fanboys who would defend any idiocy they decide to put in the game.

It would be a bad decision to make a game the fans of the first one would hate. And Bethesda-like writing and no C&C would certainly alienate them.

they were "rich" enough to beat bethesda at graphics and draw even in terms of mainstream-hype so i m not sure hiring at least 1 person with a basic clue about what makes for a good character system and combat wouldnt exactly have ruined them financially. kind of a shame TW2 looks like more of the same, the great atmosphere & setting could really use some decent gameplay to go with.

How are the books? I just finished Shriek by Vandermeer, so I'm not expecting to be impressed by Sapkowski's originality, but that isn't a bad thing. How's the prose?

I'm a huge fan of Czech. I mean, how awesome is a language in which you greet people with "Ahoy!"?

Polish sounds quite weird indeed. Me and my friends make drunk jokes about it every once in a while. Although I'm pretty sure Lithuanian language is also is weird to someone somewhere..

More importantly, what did you think of Shriek?

The translated Witcher books are okay, actually. They suffer from translation mishaps. Some of them huge mishaps, but the writing's more or less on par with the English localization of the game after EE is applied: oddly stilted sometimes, but colorful. No great prose to be had, to be sure, but there's some fun dialogue in both The Last Wish and Blood of Elves. Pick them up if you liked the game.

Well, maybe compared to the game, but compared to the Polish original and the actually good translations, not really. It really shows that the translator is not a native speaker of English.
