What happened to old days of parental lock? Speaking of laws in Germany, does anyone know wheter a game with depiction of violence pass as ok if all such depictions were subject to a parental lock?

They've gone the same direction as the old days when parents actually raised their children.

This is retarded. Unfortunetely, there are no clear laws regading videogame violence in Germany, so publishers tone down their games until they're certain the game will pass.

German localization virtually always sucks, however, so it won't be missed. I'll hopefully buy from Play.com and get an English version with all the sex and violence I can handle.

But arent you worried that you may become demented or schizophrenic from vitnessing something suggestive in Witcher?

I prefer CDWOW, because the prices are considerably lower. Those games they sell are for the Australian / Asian market and are sometimes the same multilanguage ones they sell in Europe. This was exactly the case with HoMM5.

I hope there is a potion that allows night vision but as a side effect causes blindness.

So, you hope this is a middle-ages System Shock? In that case, they'll also need a drug that makes you super strong but then makes you go on an LSD trip once it wears off.

Then again, by this logic, wouldn't a healing potion kill you once it wears off?

This was already done :P (super stimpacks) I personally don't like that drugs in games ussualy have side effects opposite to the positive effects. The drawbacks should be surprising, unpredicted, original. For examle it would be nice that one way required a use of some strong drug that would cause impotence, then some options may be unavailable in future :P

In ADOM, there are scrolls of cure blindness that you can read. I like the humor in that game.
OMG

Anyway, is it just me or this attention on moves and stuff erases all doubt about how The Witcher will "ressurrect" old-school RPG? :?

Sorry, I don't think anyone but you thought The Witcher would "resurrect old-school RPG".
A big video of the game was published a looong time ago.

Welcome to the Codex, BTW :D

WTF?

MY name is Michal Madej. Those stupid bastards are trying to get attention by impersonating me?

This is highly surprising. I know a certain Michal Madej myself, who is a programmer, but he's certainly not the guy from the video, and last I heard he was still living in Krakow. (He has a younger brother Marcin - you too, Mayday? :D)

No, my younger brother's name was Peter, last I heard. And I'm a 3d artist, not a programmer

BTW, I sure hope the nickname of the Madej you know isn't "Mayday" too. It's getting all too popular!

OK then. We seem to have a shortage of names and surnames in Poland, repetitions happen way too often. Eg last year, one day I noticed people at the uni were looking funny at me, and then I read that Samoobrona's (Self-Defense Party) candidate for Krakow's presidential seat was called exactly like me. Jesus Christ, what a shame. He should use his middle name, not to be mistaken with some decent folks.

Haha, poor you!

Back on the topic of the Witcher, the game sure has improved a lot since the first time I saw an ad for it... back in 1998!! (that was a "looking for content creators" ad though)

Unfortunately not - according to the newsbit, it'll be out in September in all countries it'll be released in.

Yeah? Whats stopping them from delaying it closer to the holiday sales, hmm? Happens all the time despite what they claim. I dont believe in these release dates. When the game is on the shelf, only then I will start looking in to it, not to some prerelease PR bullshit.

By "holiday" you mean Winter holiday? I thought their reasoning was the opposite - since people buy less games in the Summer months (I've read it somewhere and can't back it up, so maybe it's bullshit), it's better to push the game to the beginning of Fall and polish it up more.
And no, nothing can stop them from delaying the game to 2010 or canceling development, if they wish to do so.

Over the years, many RPGs have been pushed from summer to fall. Christmas is a double-edged sword: games are sold like crazy but a lot of people say it's gotten too crowded for all the new releases to fit in the market.

The excellent UK publisher Gollancz has started publishing Andrej Sapkowski's books in English. The first one is called The Last Wish and is a collection of short stories. The following books (published once a year, I gather) are novels.

Here are two short stories:

http://www.thewitcher.com/michau/monk/A ... _Truth.pdf

(haven't read either of them)

And here is a review of The Last Wish:

Jesus, the reviewer compares Sapkowski to Vance. Last I read, Vance was one of the worst authors in existence, think Jordan's late books^2. Did I miss something or what? Or should I try reading Lyonesse once again?

I've read some of his Dying Earth short stories and they weren't bad. Certainly nothing resembling Wheel of Time! I thought he's well liked and respected?
