Half Life 2 is a piece of shit. The only good thing about it is the art design, and even that got old due to lack of variety. Great my ass.

Come on, HL2 didn't lack variety in the art design. It's a bad game, true, but the the levels were fairly small and gimmicky enough that it never felt like you just went through the same shit over and over.

I still didn't like the game. Production values up the wazoo but sooo fucking stale and uninspired. Not to mention pandering and insulting.

This video actually explains what was wrong with the game pretty well:

Except i'd go further and argue that the game was not simply a bad sequel, but just plain bad.

I remember buying HL2 in 2004, and running into these jarring forced puzzle interruptions. Is this an FPS or MYST?! I kept thinking. Is there something wrong with me for not seeing the masterpiece everyone else is seeing?

Then I wasted like 5 hours trying to shoot down a helicopter before figuring out that this entire branch of gameplay was unforeseen by developers and a dead end, because I wasn't supposed to leave my boat at the end of previous level. I went back for the boat and it was no longer there. That's when I gave up on that stupid piece of shit game.

The vehicle sections were the worst parts of Half Life 2.
In reality, anything that involved something other than you shooting shit on foot was pretty forgettable. I liked Alyx tho, she's cute.

You reminded me a part in the beginning when Freeman first met Alyx. A bunch of combine beat up Freeman and the screen turned white, I thought "welp, I did wrong, let's load a save game and find a way to deal with those guy". Tried 9 or 10 times until my friend pointed out that I was an idiot and that was a part of a scripted sequence.

Yeah man, you strip away the art design, the free mods, the physics, the rave reviews by both critics and players alike, the source engine which is the foundation for tons of excellent games, the adequate gameplay with diverse environments and encounters, strip away all that and what do you have? Nothing! Piece of shit!

Wow, so many bad arguments in one sentence. Free mods and source engine? The fuck is that shit got to do with the game itself? Physics? Bullshit gimmick that added nothing except boring ass puzzles. Rave reviews? Players? Lol what the fuck are you high or something?

Half Life 2 sucked where it counted. No level design, bad gunplay, non-existent enemy AI, and retarded story line and characters. The game was all fluff and no actual substance.

Note to readers: the last sentence above can be applied to any FPS. That sentence is meaningless, except "no level design" - you are right about that! That's why you fell through the floor when you launched the game. Oh shit, we forgot to design the levels! Well, good thing I was high!

Rave reviews? Physics? Source engine? Gimmicks, Gimmicks, Gimmicks! Half Life sucked except for everything that came before it. Too bad for you, but another game that came along at the same time as HL2 forever set HL2 as a superior game! The release of the incredibly shitty Doom 3 forever cemented HL2 as the winner of the contest for most anticipated FPS. While I never said HL2 was the greatest, in comparison to it's contemporaries it was pretty damn good.

By 2004 Valve had bought everything on this planet, though. I clearly remember how Half Life 2 even made it to mainstream media when it was released, and it was one of the few videogames that actually was shown in normie media. And let me tell you: the physics, the characters or even the shooting was not the center of the attention: Half Life 2 was sold as some sort of technical achievement, an example of how videogames could trascend the platformer mold into something more closely related to movies.

To be honest, HL2 and Bloodlines had better facial animations than many of our contemporary games.

Ok, whatever. Seems like this is really upsetting you so I won't make any jokes - this is a stressful time of the year, so your ol' pal Daemongar is here for you, so lets be serious. Here are the opinions on HL2:
Bad level design - there were brilliant levels, and some that were just open. However, did they recreate to scale a dystopian world? Ya. Did they have Ravenswood and other memorable areas? Yep.
Bad gunplay - average.
Non-existent enemy AI - not exactly sure which game prior to 2004 had excellent enemy AI. Those running, climbing zombies were awesome. The fat, bloated zombies with the poison spiders (don't know what they are called... blakemores?) were the shit. Of course, you are welcome to name a FPS contemporary of HL2 with better AI.
And retarded story line and characters - Now this is actually not worth arguing over. FPS =/= storyline
The game was all fluff and no actual substance - which is pretty much par for the FPS course. Saying HL2 is a shit game is just opinion.

I like how you keep mentioning reviews as if it's some kinda positive quality of the game itself rather than an external thing.

Thanks! I think that game is fine. There were parts that were average, but that doesn't make the game shit.

HL2 was pretty good, and it's place in FPS' is magnified by the colossal failure of Doom3, but the fact that some hold it in *high regard* doesn't mean you have to place the game down with "Rise of the Triad" or whatever. The worst that could be said about HL2 is that it's average. But "it's shit" just doesn't hold up, no matter how you slice it. The world has spoken.

I had a lot more fun with original ROTT than I did with HL2. The former was gameplay-centric. The latter was all about showing off. Showing off physics, showing off vehicles, showing off facial animations (remember how much hype Valve had about those?), and generally showing off the kind of "storytelling" that became the death knell of FPS in the years that followed.

I used to think HL2 was awesome but playing it now is fucking boring. It relied too much on the novelty gimmicks. Now it's just really a standard corridor shooter with long unskippable cutscenes where you can walk around while the game jerks itself off.

True. Still liked it more than 1 though.

Retard detected. First one was superior in every way.
I don't really find it much better in anything. Guns also feel awful, enemies are HP bloated. Pacing is atrocious with you walking around with nothing to kill. Fucking xen shit.

HL2 is just a cinematic FPS like any other. Doesn't stink nor smell, move forward shoot stuff watch cutscene people talk forever. Never felt like playing the following episodes.
